The super affordable Moto E by Motorola has gotten tons of praise for being a great device for such a low price and I have to agree that it is probably the best device I've used for under $130 off contract. But, that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement.
Rooting aka gaining administrative rights on a device can open up a whole world of possibilites for this little handset. From loading custom ROMs like Cyanogen to flashing mods to increase battery life, there's a ton you can do.
Motorola recently released an OTA update to the Moto E to bring it up to Android 4.4.4 that sort of threw a wrench in the way we were rooting it before that so coming up with this method wasn't terribly easy (involved a lot of researching through forums etc.). Regardless though, it was managed to get rooted and even to have a custom recovery as well.
So, without further ado, here's how to root the Moto E.

Nice video! A little tip: at 3:30, you don't need to paste it into notepad, then rewrite the key. You can just right-click inside of the command prompt and choose Paste.

Today i wasted six hours trying to flash a Moto E, and this tutorial help me alot

Been able to follow everything up to flashing recovery. My 'Fastboot Flash Mode' screen looks totally different than any ones screen. (Did some research first) Flashing recovery is no problem, the problem lies in selecting it. My down and up arrows go threw the menu options, and the power button activates said option. When I activate the 'recovery mode' option I quickly see the bootload warning screen then it goes back to my Fastboot menu. Upon looking into this further I see under 'Bootloader Logs' that it says 'Boot up failed' This is where I've come to a crashing halt. Any help out there? PS: My phone still boots just fine with no lose of any of my info.

I had the same issue until I read the examples of how the string code you would type would look like. If you deleted the pound/hash/number signs on the string you'll get the error. The sign you should have included and not deleted looks like and is " # " without the quotes. 6yrs too late I guess.

hi i used this method to root my moto e first gen... when i tried to flash anothr rom took backup of custom rom but failed to flash the new rom... tried two to three times but failed.... all the times i took backup again and again.... now my custom rom that is andrd 5.1 is showing low internel memory only 220mb... am unable instal single app now.... please help.... what should i doo.... with link please..... am stuck.....

Trying to do this in 2023. When installing the recovery img, in the terminal it says it's corrupted. I'm thinking about finding a different custom recovery img on the internet.

i just install ROM cm13 in my moto e 1st gen using CWM recovery with suitable gapps, den i turned on my phone ...phone was working fine but suddenly i realize supersu , root checker such apps wasn't in my app list because i forget to backup my apps , so i install supersu form play store and open it , and pop up comes up asked did i install TWRP/CWM recovery ...so i click on TWRP/CWM den again popup appear and said need to reboot phone i click on okay but is stuck on cm ROM logo, phone is not turning on , i switch phone off and tried to open my CMW recovery but there was CM13 recovery ..where restore from sdcard option wasn't there .i don't know what to do next ...?

Update...So no upgrade to 5.1 eh? Looks like this device is forever locked in KitKat 4.4, whatever, I use it as an Ipod and Text Now app makes an awesome way to use it as a Wi-Fi Phone

what really kills me is when they brought the tourney director over and took another 3-4 more minutes, just stick to the 2 minute rule and then call the clock and if everyone would have just shut up. it would go by faster. then that is the way to take care of Will. also going under the table and using a hoodie like phil laak on an all in , isnt a bad idea either. this was getting annoying. I remember playing online and you only took 30 seconds, 2 minutes is enough time. hope the rest of the wsop tourney goes smoother

Hi Dave, after I copy the SuperSU.zip and reboot the phone as you show in the video, for me it doesn't go to any menu options, instead it says: AP Fastboot Flash Mode (Secure).... why is that? Down a little further it says that "Device is UNLOCKED. Status Code: 3. Any ideas on why it says AP Fastboot Flash Mode (Secure)? I've tried searching on google but found nothing.

Hello, Follow this steps: (1) Press windows key+R key to open run box. (2) Type control panel and press enter to open control panel. (3) Than open file explorer options which will open a small window. (3) Than click on view tab and uncheck "hide extensions for known file types". (4) Then copy the downloaded recovery.img file to a new folder and press shift key+right key, and select open command window here". It will open command prompt. Then type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" That's it!! To boot your phone to recovery mode, type "fastboot boot recovery.img" Enjoing flashing!!

The moto e XT1022 has since been updated to Lollipop 5.1 and there is no guide to root and install custom recovery for that, cause the one for 5.0.2 soak test does not work for 5.1 Lollipop.....please make an update to this video....request...

I have used this same method to root my moto e 1st gen 2014 on android 5.1. Rooted properly but after a day I am facing some issues with google play services . Google play services has stopped , news playstand has stopped , able to open gmail app but not any email as error gmail has stopped working) . Oh yah its very easy! All you have to do is download something, plug in, power on, select xyz, open launcher, power unplug off, download xyz, type in command ABC, move file zyx, plug in device while holding the button and other button, then move file xyz, into folder ABC while the command IMG is up and running, then download app byx, turn off and boot using method 32, and then you Might have it! Super simple

Why for the love of god did they make this so stupidly hard? They could have simply had a wall of text on the website saying that this will void the warranty then when you agree, give you a password to type in that unlocks everything.
