The royal took me years to learn, I would always slip out. But once I had it it turned into my safest, most default grind. It’s all about getting your weight between your dominant foot’s h block and backside plate.

Its super hard to explain right? It just becomes super natural once you get it

Brandon Drummond exactly, is really awkward at first but then once you have the right stance and especially the muscle memory of where that backside plate is, it’s like riding a bike

@@robscallon how strange, never thought that I'd find a comment from you here lol so you also like aggressive skating, that's sick! Ps. One tip that might help: Don't only position your feet / legs correctly but also pay attention to your arms! I think that royale is one of the tricks that need really good arm positioning in order to be done. Personally I try to point my both arms to the direction of the grind in order to counter balance and put some weight in front. Arms also help to position the whole upper body better.

I did everything backwards. I learned royales before frontsides, flat instead of rocker, and learned them on rails before ledges lol. Frontsides hurt my knees for some reason. Now i gotta learn everything again lol. Great video man

the helmet cam (looking down at your feet) was INSANELY helpful. really really really nice to be able to see what my posture / feet position should look in the ledge. thanks a lot brandon!!

I've just restarted skating and I'm pretty comfortable with basic soul tricks now. Trying royals and I'm getting there, I'm just having to adjust to the increased slippiness! I was interested to hear you say you have your dominant foot at the back, cuz I've naturally been learning with my dominant foot in front. It feels really weird to even think of doing it the other way. It's interesting how people find things easier in different ways. I would never have thought of doing it that way. 🤷♂️

I've been skating on and off since the early 90s and I've always struggled with royals, farvs etc. I can boot anything. Souk, acid, pirn, makio, on and on, topside too. But I just never learned royalties ad a kid and just kept skating without em. I can retake handrails , or downstairs I guess because I naturally kinda slip into em. But a ledge I still cant just go royale. Kinda crazy that I've gotten away with it as long as I have .

I have trouble keeping my feet from separating and sorta doing the splits when I try and grind the entire rail what can I do to help that this is just with frontsides not royal
@BrandonDrummond5 жыл бұрын
If your skates have big soul plates, use the negative plate to stop you sliding out any further. Otherwise just really focus on keeping your feet under your shoulders.

Sry loosening your Skates to learn a Royal is plainly wrong. It will only make the trick rly hard to learn correctly once you got used to it that way. I know that cause i did it wrong when i was younger. Did it with nearly opened fattys. I had a hard time when i started again at 36. The trick is about positioning your knees the correct way and NOT about bending your ankles. Look up Brian Aragons video about it. Big up for your vids and work anyways. ❤️
@BrandonDrummond5 жыл бұрын
When I started skating I had my skates done up as tight as possible and that made this trick very painful to stand in. I was just trying to combat that situation. I agree that having your skates super lose is very bad! Almost cheating in a way. I just thought it would help haha. Cheers man.
