I don’t know if that was ever accurate. We wouldn’t be able to delineate different clothing by eras if “personal style” was common. One of the biggest things that has come with fast fashion is variety. Back in the day, you wanted something all the way from New York and you lived in the middle of nowhere you had to wait for it to trickle down into the brick and mortar stores or find a way to sew it yourself… the obsession with personal style is part of the reason that the trend cycle is so quick; everyone is looking for the next best thing to separate them from the rest. Even the decision to find clothes undesirable if they’re too over saturated speaks to the general shift of clothing as a form of communicating social identity to clothing as a form of individual branding.

I agree with the jaded London part, i do think some of their things look cool but the problem is how they steal aesthetics of people with actually original styles and transform it into generic, fast-fashion quality pieces (and trying the point of making new versions of Vintage clothes in a bad, "trendy" way) They're like the middle point between qualitative high fashion and temu I appreciate your input on this!

Not everything needs to be accessible to everyone, particularly if that thing is not a necessity. Yes, clothing is a necessity, but owning clothing you like/want is not. Having an abundance of clothing is not. Curating a personal wardrobe is not. Fast fashion capitalizes on the fact that that people want MORE than they need, and they want to have unfettered access to anything they see/want. A Hermes bag will never be accessible to most people. And it doesn't need to be, because owning a Hermes bag is not a necessity or a right.

She could have one blouse a year maybe, there just weren't many stores to go to at all. I agree with a lot of what you said in terms of like influencing and the explosion of certain trends due to influencers. It can be kinda exhausting to see certain types of garments or items EVERYWHERE and on EVERYONE (that’s how I feel about sambas anyway). I also agree with the categorization thing being kind of annoying too, but then again it’s important not to get too fixated on what other people think, I feel like people should be able to wear what they want without too much fear of judgement. I feel like some days I get labeled as grundgey, girly, minimalist, French chic, and colorful, simply because I own and use certain clothing items (docs, milkmaid tops, jellyfish top or skirt, knee high boots, etc etc) I love having a variety of items that are of different silhouettes or forms simply because I can’t just stick to one thing all the time. People perceive you as someone who can’t stick to one thing or has no style but style is fluid and can change over the years and that’s totally fair, what can be interesting about studying your own style over the years is seeing what has stuck vs what has gone from your style. I personally prefer vintage items as well vs the newer productions, this is mostly because I am picky about silhouette because sometimes the newer productions just don’t take silhouette into consideration (like how you gave the example of the true religion jeans). Personally, what helps me not be as much as a “fashion victim” and picky about what trends I participate in is because I am picky about color, silhouette, and texture. I also like to dress according to what looks good on my body personally (nothing wrong with people who DONT do this but it’s just how I prefer to dress myself). Lots of great points made, seems kinda elitist to some people but idk if fashion should be accessible 🤷‍♀️ I prefer personal taste, but finding out what you resonate with takes time and can be scary to others especially since the fashion industry sells this idea of being an IT girl to other women as a means to sell certain products.

I love this video so much, and to be quite honest, I agree with most of the points. I think what makes fashion really fashion is not a clothing item or accessories but it's a reflection of the person wearing it. We as a collective have decided that fashion is equal to wearing popular clothing that are trending ( which is why we have new aesthetics every 2 months. Fashion labels intentionally create these trends and "trick" or better say let us believe that if we buy this specific item we are fashionable) when in reality the reason we deem someone as fashionable is oftentimes because what they are wearing is a reflection of their personality and shows us their way of living. I think that this whole aesthetic thing where we are all trying to fit one specific box and buy things so that everyone can say/see that "oh she is a clean girl" or "oh she is a mob wife" is just restricting us and for me personally I love trying different combinations of clothing, aesthetics and so much more. I really like this channel because it makes you think twice about the trends right now and let's you think, "do I really like that and would I really wear this if I buy it or did I just see it so often that I want it"

When I was I 12/13 the adidas superstars were super popular where I lived. I liked them a lot but everyone wanted them in black and white and I HATED following what everyone else did so I bought them in bright pink and white. I’m so different ik ;(, my point being I always hated following what everybody does. I myself dress what you would call hyper feminine or what they call coquette, but I don’t like to label my whole “aesthetic” to coquette because what you said labeling makes it so boring for me I just wear what I like. So, I 100% get where you're coming from with the leopard print on jeans situation, because cowhide print on jeans was 100% the precursor and it definitely feels dated now. That said, I feel there's a bit more nuance in the leopard print situation. Leopard print has been much more widely adopted in fashion over many many more trend cycles than cowhide has been. Cowhide has very westernwear influence that hasn't been widely adopted by greater society until a very specific point in time (and was thus thrown onto every cheaply-made Shein garment you could find). Because of this, the longevity of the trend was very poor, and unless someone is wearing an actual westernwear piece with cowhide it comes across as dated. By comparison, leopard print has been widely adopted in general fashion off and on for significantly longer. The applications of the print has changed, but by and large it's been worn much more than cowprint by the average person over the past 60 or 70 years. I don't think the longevity of leopard print jeans will be nearly as bad as the cowprint jeans. Of course there's nuance to be had when you look at the quality and construction of a piece; poorly made Shein leopard print pants will not look good nearly as long as a quality constructed pair of pants, regardless of cut. Anyways your statement just made me think a bit, because the cowprint vs leopard print jean situation felt different to me and I couldn't really place why until now. I really think leopard print overall has better longevity, and if the pants are a fairly neutral shape vs a trendy cut they'll last a lot longer. Cowprint jeans might as well just have "2020" stamped on them somewhere.

honestly, its not the silhouette I dislike, in fact the silhouette of a baggy jean is possibly my favourite ! but what I dont like is how boring a wide legged plain blue denim jean can be when it is a fast fashion product. to me it feels like brands dont need to put any effort into creating it - so they dont ???? idk if im explaining myself well here ahahahah but I just find that a baggy jean is nothing interesting. but I do like a baggy silhouette , for example a pair of dungarees or dickies would appeal to me more because they are not just a plain up and down no detail pair of jeans ygm ??? hahaha lol in my head it makes sense !!xxxx

I wish I had seen this a few days ago I found a vintage rain coat and loved it, I just had to add a belt BUTTTT then I bought a vintage inspired “ modern jacket from the popular brands these days and yes the new one has a nice pattern and mix of colors , but it’s uncomfortable, and the quality honestly, felt like I had a plastic bag on and it made me sad so I got a second one from a thrift store and I’m hoping that I can customize it a bit( like adding a coat liner and belt and hood to it) which the vintage one already has!! but now I know 😄

In my case, there are a great many influencers that I do not follow. I might see them referred to by a person I DO follow, e.g. you or Kat, but I don't follow them myself. @@nina-w and that’s a totally fair criticism but if something is “ruined” for you just because people are massively consuming it wouldn’t it imply that you’ll stop wearing it, and you become like the people you are criticizing that cycle through clothes just because they’re trendy but in the opposite direction, you stop wearing the clothes that you enjoy because they became trendy. And sustainability aside, I just find it sort of sad that something becomes ruined for you because it’s popular, if i like a trend I’ll consume it in a sustainable way and keep wearing it even when the trend is over, or if I like something it wouldn’t matter to me if it becomes trendy or not
