This is what i do 50m-Get out and make the pace 200m-float and keep the speed u got 300-start trying to accelerate again (in reality your slowing down but it makes sure ur good) 400-use the speed from the acceleration and finish Hit 49.3 today

You missed the most important part. 0-50m you don't just get out, you are trying to find the balance between fast and very economical acceleration. The first 50 meters determine how strong you can run the final straight.

The term "free energy" is used a lot as they say from the start ur first few seconds dont deplete ur energy storage very much but 1: When shaving time every bit counts and 2: muscular fatigue still plays a role and the more muscularly tired u are ur body is wasting effort trying to get strength from them thus making u more tired overall in the longrun

His pacing is unmatched over 400m. It also helps to be able to run 19.3 seconds in the 200m so coming through in 21 seconds is easy 😂. Wayde Van Niekerk runs the 400m the exact opposite. Running the first 200m seven tenths faster than Michael for his world record. But over the last 100m Michael is able to run four tenths faster than Wayde. Wayde ran 43.03. Michael ran 43.18. Both are incredible athletes!

While I agree that Michael was very calibrated with his pace, Wayde ran faster. I think it was due to his speed reserve. He can run under 10 secs easily and has done so many times. So maybe for Wayde and his training/ body type, he paced properly. Michael did the same. The 400 is so complex in terms of how each individual should pace it in my opinion. Also we all wish Usain would have trained for it. But love the guy nonetheless.

There was a discussion on this. MJ was going after this more "evenly paced" strategy hitting the first 200 at 21-21.3 and the 2nd 200m around 22-22.5. The discussion mentioned that the modern guys Norman and Vanderkirk come in 20.3-20.5 for the first 200. MJ could have easily jogged 20.5 for the first 200m and the remainder in 22-22.5 for a sub 43.

@@ishaansingh8090 Damn right. I still feel he never got enough credit for his achievements. Many do not realize how he dominated the 400M. He ran sub 44 secs an incredible 22 times. To put that in perspective nobody else has ever even done that 7 times. His dominance throughout the 90s was insane.

Johnson showed there are different ways to get it done, and clarified that different body types can get it done as well. People forgot about Johnson after Bolt, but Johnson's break thru in the 200M made Bolt's 200M possible. After all before him we were mentally stuck on the 30+ years WR of 19.72 seconds.

What he did was adapt his running style to his greatest gifts. He was gifted with speed and endurance. Most sprinters would not touch the 400m because of lack of endurance. Most people that do well in 400m have longer strides which Micheal did not have. Because he could conserve he was able to use his speed to beat the competition. He was a very intelligent runner.

He is the saviest and most efficient runner ever . He avoids wasting energy with unnecessary movements so he keeps a fixed form while running. His upright running form also takes advantage of ground reaction force to propel him forward.

I remember a track meet where I went all out for my first 400m race and felt that fatigue come over me and I couldn't push through the last 25m letting the other guy win. my second race, 4x4, I started at a slow steady increase cause felt a bit burned out from the first one and decided to do my secret stride at the 200m before all out sprint at the 300m. the opponent caught up to me in the first 200m but my stride brought me to his level by the 300m and I was able to sprint it all the way without any feeling of fatigue. pr and got 56 seconds that race, and I beat the other guy by 0.3s, and it was my first 400m win for my school. one of the best running memories I've ever had.

I remember watching a programme around the time of the 1996 Olympics and there was a running coach analysing his running technique. He came to the conclusion that Michaels upright running style gave him more traction in the corners so he didn't lose much speed compared to his competitors coming out of the corner.

Michael had such a smooth, and powerful, stride. He was definitely one of best 400 meter men ever. I think if Lee Evans were able to have had modern training he could have owned the world record today, even. While Michael was a 200m and 400m man, Lee could have ran either the 400m, or the 800m if they would have only let him. He had not only world class speed but stamina, too!

Long time passed since but ran 51.3 in younger years. Havin some beers one night at get together a friend bet me I couldn’t break 60. Took the bet. Haven’t ran for nearly ten years. I figured I could still easily run four 15 second hundreds. Nope had to walk the last 150m .. that was dumb.

I did that by accident at my school athletics carnival once. Was feeling abit sick from too much chocolate and coke (long story) and decided to take it slow in the start and build into the race. By the 300m mark I had caught up to everyone and by the straight I was infront and pulling away for my first and only ever 400m win. Usually I'd come 6th or 7th.

Why Johnson over Bolt? (I give it to Bolt, cause his records are much more unbreakable. Bolt destroyed MJ's 200wr and someone else already broke MJ's 400wr and I think it will take a looooooong time for anyone to come close to Bolt's 100m record). I might say Jordan and Bolt, but you have to consider football (soccer) greats because their sport has by far the most worldwide popularity, participation, and competition.

@@proverbalizer Actually Bolt only broke Michael Johnson's 200m record by 2 hundredths of a second (19.30 to MJ's 19.32). Bolt broke his own record later on to go 19.19 which is still only 13 hundredths of a second better than MJ. Michael destroyed his own 200m record of 19.66 to go 19.32. That's what destroying is. A full 3 tenths of a second. The 200m record before MJ was 19.72. So yeah ultimately Michael took 4 tenths off the old record (from 19.72 to 19.32). That's the definition of destroying. Michael also had a 10 year long win streak in the 400m if I remember correctly. It took over 12 years for his 200m record to be broken by only .02 secs by Bolt (1996-2008) and it took 17 years for his 400m record to be broken by .15 secs by Wayde (1999-2016) who never ran close to that again. That's why it's MJ over Bolt.

I run at Eastern Illinois I’m a 200-400 guy I ran 48.71 and 21.42 my senior year of higshcool(first year running track). My freshman season got cut short due to covid. This is my race plan for the 400m and how I was taught to run it. Hope this helps some of you! 0-50m I get out around 90% then accelerate to 95% coming off the turn 50-180m I’ll float but at 180m I’ll accelerate a little more instead of during the first half of the curve( you want to accelerate into the 200m mark then hold till 295m unless your coming off the curve you don’t accelerate at the first half of the curve unless it’s a start. So you wanna speed up into the curve instead of trying to pick it up while turning you’ll just waste a lot of energy. 295-400m at 295m i start digging and building up my last bit of power to carry over into the last 100 then it’s just form from there. If you can’t hold your speed that long then this isn’t the race plan for you. This type of race plan is if you wanna push yourself to a pr. Good luck!

What most people crucially fail to realize is that Michael Johnson had waaay more top speed than other 400m runners. This is evident in his 200m world record of 19.32. In track and field, top speed is the MOST important aspect because it allows you to run relaxed and easy but at a very fast controlled pace, while others are working hard to keep up. In order to run a faster controlled pace without burning energy, you’ll have to increase your top speed. You can do this by building fast twitch muscles. Below are some workouts to help build those muscles. Sprinting steep hills in short distances Running bleachers (or any set of steep steps) at top speed Jump squats Mountain climbers Pulling sleds for 100 yards - 4 reps Sprinting 4 reps of 150 meters at practice Sprinting 8 reps of 50 meters at practice with (but break them up in 2 sets of 4reps with 6 minutes of rest between the 2 sets) - this one is a favorite. Sprinting 4 sets of 200 meters Sprinting 6 reps of 100 meters Great thing about increasing top speed is that not only will it help you have a faster controlled pace, but will also decrease your 100 and 200 meter times as well. The 400 is one of the hardest events in track and field. The only things that are harder in my opinion is the 800, 400m hurddles and the steeplechase. I am more of a middle distance and distance runner so If you disagree or agree with what I said then you can comment

He avg 10.8 per 100m. Most humans cannot run a single 10.8 100m let alone sustain full speed for almost a full minute. I trained 200m and it's crazy hard maintaining speed for this race. I think my best for the 400m was 51 sec but I didn't train this race.

I ran a 58 flat without spikes. Because the last 100M I was last place but everyone was shoulder to shoulder so I got pumped and sprinted hard but then puked right when I finished. 7 second PR

Psychologicaly it makes sense ,when I push it for first 100 m I’m exhausted and am thinking fxxxx it ,whereas still having something left I would be more motivated ( I’m rubbish 1:36 but I’m 53 ;so guess it’s ok)

I'm starting to train for the 400. what is the best tactic I can use for training? how fast do I have to run every 50/100 split? do I first have to train for the endurance or just start with training for the speed per split?

Both. Honestly the best way to train would to be to do a 400. See how quick you get tired. If it’s on the last 100, do more sprints, bit work on endurance some. If you are tired (as in significant slow down) then try endurance them move to sprints. Don’t worry about time, just do what you can.

If your lucky and have access to a coach and facilities follow the other posters responses on sprint / endurance training. If you po like I was, do focused hard spri t's I the 150-250 range against a slight uphill incline or against wind, and push 500-600 meeters for building endurance. Some strength training along with basics of push ups, curls and box squats. Also help core strength. And always focus on technique. Reviewing video and making small corrections goes a long way.

Hey man. Do you think a sub 19 sprinter could run sub 42? I checked some 400m splits and some athletes ran the first 200m 1-2 seconds slower than their pb. So let's say they ran the 400m like Michael Johnson, who usually ran his first 200m 1.5-2 seconds slower than his pb. A 18.9 second athlete could run 19.9-20.1 for first 200m and maybe finish the last 200m meters from 20.4-20.6 producing a 40.3 to 40.7!!! I know this time sounds unholy, but do you think it's possible? Just keep in mind I myself don't know how to run 400m, so this could be way off 😅

9.7 sprinter can run a sub 19. Can a sub 9.7 sprinter run under 42 seconds? I don't know it is uncharted territory. I think 42.5 is possible for sure.

That’s different because of how the role of endurance plays in this. The longer a distance you compare a 100m or 200m to, it’s less accurate. 400m is already twice a 200m, and a 200m is run while knowing you can gas out by 200m. As long as elite endurance is there, something can happen.

It is universal. Anyone who ran 400m competitively knows that there is no free energy. The first 50m is the crucial part of a 400m race. The more energy you save during acceleration the stronger you will be at the end. Of course, if you start too slow you can't make up for the lost time, so there must be a perfect balance.

@@TheWayToWin Yes, nothing like "running down" the leader in the home stretch of the 400! In my race last year (Very old guys!), my competitor went out super fast and led me by 7-8 meters at the 300 but I gradually reeled him in to win by .5 seconds (Still have the race on video!).

I remember my first 400, I was tryna pace myself the first 50 meters but my opponent just zoomed by me and I sprinted the rest of the race. Don’t make the same mistake
