I have played star wars rpg (non-saga edition) for 20 years, aside from pc character sheets I have never prepped...ever. well I guess that isn't entirely true, I have thought of names of npcs, maybe even what character archetype, I usually have at least an idea of what the plot is, and I have threads peppered throughout the galaxy. bare minimum planning, it's more interesting for me as the GM when I don't even know what will happen, and it makes the game practically unrestricted for the players.

Done this many times, actually. My preferred "system" is to ask PCs if they're "strong, fast or tough". Then they must choose the opposite of one of the remaining two. That can then use their "positive" trait to work around stuff, where I use their "negative" trait to get them in trouble. Unresolvable clashes of these two produce a new situation that's designed to shuffle the deck (my character isn't fast enough to enemy forces, by is strong enough to beat them into submission = the leader comes up and offers honorable combat for my amazing combat skills). Other then that, this is pretty much how I do it: ask the most basic questions about their characters as they come up, have a VERY vague idea of what you want then to do (a dungeon crawl, a castle siege, etc) and GOGOGOGOGO.

The first game I've ever GM-ed was at school and we played during breaks between classes (most of them happened at the same classroom). We didn't know a single thing about tabletop RPGs, we've never heard of D&D and I never did any preparations. I only had 1 d6, pen and paper. All of it was made on the fly, the world, the NPCs, the encounters, etc. It was dumb but a lot of fun. I think everyone should definitely try this at least once.

Oh gods...I ran a game for about half of one of the groups I play with because we were so short on players we didn't want to run the campaign - gave our DM a break. I was using an adventure straight out of a book called Prepared! which is written specifically for the kind of situation where everyone except the GM shows up to game night and everyone goes "well, what now?" I was reading the latter half of it while conducting the introductory battle...and I thought *that* was rough. This is some next level madness!

I am rewatching this video and it is great. This whole inplovisation stick is way easyer if you dont have too do it alone. In a desperate situation like in an 18 hour long car drive session you migth consider to ask your players some questions, like: "As you open the door to the next dungeon room, you see 4 goblins sitting around the Table. Player xy: What are they doing?" It's ok in a game like this, if your players have the rigth mindset. It works in other games like story telling games and it can work in a TTRPG. If the other mechanics feel TTRPG-ish you will be fine. And you can let your players deside about allmoste everything thats fluff. What ist the artefact that the villan stole from the king. Why is it worth the efford. Is it a powerful artefact or a beloved family heirloom? That can be decided by your players in an unplanned game like this. Easy.

It's good to hear you speak more animatedly like that. Makes the point get across with more fun and energy.
@rashkavar5 жыл бұрын
That level of animated frenzy combined with his flavour of rhetoric ("this is how things are done" sort of presentation) combines to have a connotation of "and if you do it differently, you are wrong and not a person who is welcome here," whether you want it to or not. I've seen friends bounce off his videos because they sense that sort of undertone as it is. I don't believe it now - I think of it as just passion for the game of role playing - but amping things up to this level with some of his over videos would make it really hard for newcomers to ignore.
@cattrucker82575 жыл бұрын
@@rashkavar I think it's a personal perception sort of thing, perhaps some people just don't have enough confidence. The rapid-fire delivery (which is, of course, intentional and thematic here, since it's about unplanned making-up of things) only gives me a feeling of "person cares about what he says, he put thought into it, he may have points I could find useful", i.e. literally why I watch Guy. Talking-heady 'tubers like Guy and many others, D&D or otherwise, all have this air of self-styled authority about them to be sure (after all, would they be making videos about these things on YT if they didn't think they have something they have to share with others that would enrich those others? Some self-importance for a 'tuber is like strength for a weightlifter, can't go without it), but I personally never felt pressured to conform to what he says and have my own takes on some of those things. I approach him as a welcome second opinion/potentially useful advice.
@rashkavar5 жыл бұрын
@@cattrucker8257 I fully agree with that sentiment - it's why I'm still here. It's just that, at least in the role playing space, he's in the minority of presenters in that he has both this self-assured attitude and is actually presenting good advice. There's a lot of self-assured channels out there who tell a handful of decent stories, but have some really bad advice. (ie: oh, they rolled a nat-20 and therefore activated this ancient device they have no idea what it does and therefore were teleported to the moon and died....because yes, a nat-20 is definitely a guaranteed success on the exact task being attempted even if it results in an instant TPK...) There's also a lot of good advice channels out there, most of which are being presented by people who readily admit they're fallible and that other approaches are legitimate options, many of which are even presented as debates between 2 or more people in a gaming group who have differing opinions on the matter. This is one of the channels that does both the self-assured thing and is actually a good source of information. I'm just saying it's possible that the self-assured attitude can be typecasted as the self-assured guy with bad ideas that will ruin the game for most people, which can drive people away without giving him a chance to prove the error of that assumption.

Having played a roadtrip caRPG on two occasions, my top tip would be to always assign the driver a proxy... The proxy selects the correct dice and hands them over so the driver can roll into a tray with no more than a confirming glance; the proxy then reads out the results. The proxy's also responsible for checking things on the Driver's character sheet, etc. We came up with that system because of a near-miss about 2 hours into the trip where the driver dropped his dice and was blindly groping around for them at his feet. Also don't GM and drive. You'll end up doing both poorly.

An idea that will tend to explain the haphazard nature and is a great jumping off point is saying that the PCs were in a coma or had amnesia and that they have no memory of their past. This means later on when they decide "you know what I want to be a dwarf king" you can reveal that in a way that makes sense like having PCs bow and offer the king gifts or whatever.

Success will result in worship, however. I need not remind you of the power of love and worship. If you’re disavowed, you’re on your own. *Later, they get a good hit to their skulls, success or failure is determined by how well they work. If they succeed, they then start to recall who they are based on their worship. If they fail, they create new names for themselves.*

I needed this (and a couple of your other videos) about two months ago before I started my latest round of being a GM. But I"m loving all your videos. As a driving instructor, I have to tell people that the GM absolutely cannot be the driver, and shouldn't be up front. Anything that you are thinking about other than driving is dangerous. So if you've got two players up front who are both playing and watching the driving, you're reasonably safe. And before you say it, multitasking doesn't exist. Just search for "multitasking is a myth". If you want to be entertained while getting in on the improv spirit, check out Middleditch and Schwartz who are as of this writing on Netflix. You even see those moments when things go "wrong" but they enjoy those too.

I improvised a bardic themed story in this manner about two opposing Legendary Artefacts: the Golden Lute of Octavon (inspired by this indie game called Crypt of the NecroDancer) and the Silver Sitar of Del Ka-bong. Both were sentient with the Golden Lute being Neutral Evil and the Silver Sitar being Neutral Good. The Lute could raise or summon 1d4 skeletons or zombies every other turn and if used as a melee weapon had the effect of finger of death, while the Sitar could cast turn undead every other turn, and if used as a melee weapon would have the effect of a Paladin's smite on undead or fiendish creatures and deal non-lethal damage to everything else (with a Nat20 instantly knocking them out). Both had a +5 charisma bonus and a +2 each to performance and persuasion.... And a requirement of level 15 to use without the mind of either instrument taking over for the duration of the fight... and the only way to destroy either was to destroy both at the same time with the combined power of 1d10 thousand prayers each to Bahamut and Tiamat or they would reform within 1d4 centuries of the attempt.

Improv games are brilliant. I played with a GM like that a lot, and maybe thats why I turned into a GM that doesnt need books to make a world or story. I just improvize, using past experiences in past games, or other medium. Sometimes its a bit obvious where an inspiration is from, but I dont care (which according to this video, I should not). Lot of times my players give me the best ideas while not even knowing it. They start guessing stuff, and sometimes I use their ideas in the plot. That can make them feel smart (they guessed the plot, yay), and also happy, because they enjoy a good game. Using your players ideas can be a great way to get them even more involved into the story. I also let them talk a lot to eachother, so I can get the full picture in my head going while they have a nice and long banter about trivial things :) I dont remember the last time I did a fully prepared scenario for my players. It always have been partially improvised, as the players go where they please... you can pre-create the most awesome dungeon for them, the best you ever built... but if they dont want to go down that cave, you have to improvise... or force them into the dungeon. But that can feel forced, and I like to give freedom for my players to roam my worlds.

Great Video! Sounded a bit like Every time I have to introduce a new player/ Charackter to an already running campaign. You are attacked by X it seems you are outmatched, there comes a yet unknow hero, together you may slay those fiends. In Medias Res starts are always the best and fastes way to bring the players together and open up to each other in the aftermath. Then let them figure out what happend just now ^^ I really like to improvise things (of course not all things all the time) it helps to be flexible and to interact with the players thoughts. It is quit interresting how often the players are happy when they figure out the actuall part of a plot... that was just made up ^^ to feel them that way, as long as the long term targets can still be achieved. And yes I would like to see the "Great GenCon Car Game" as well!

Two words: _Goblin Game._ Pull out the stat block for a generic, CR 1/4 Goblin. Have everyone copy it down; you can do it on index cards if you need to. Have them come up with names for their goblins. Now throw those goblins in some nonsense scenario, like stealing all the chickens from a farm, pulling off a heist, or breaking out of jail. Congratulations, you now have an improvised DnD session. If you want to get more fancy, you can let the players add simple additions to the stat block, to make them feel more individual and like proper classed player characters. Let them bump up their primary stat, so they get a +3 ability modifier in it. With a +2 proficiency bonus, they're adding +5 to their most relevant rolls. Give the casters a few spells from one of the spell lists, and some spell slots to cast them with. Fighters get some Second Wind and can choose whatever weapon/armor/shield they like. Rogues get a 1d6 sneak attack. Everyone gets to choose four more skills they are proficient in, and must justify them according to who their characters are. Boom, you're done. Also, you just killed half an hour.

Recently my group has come up short two weeks in a row, meaning we didn't have enough players to keep the game going and needed to skip a week, but we still meet up with the few people who can show up and just talk and play games. This time though i had an idea, I got a new system called Risus which is meant for improvised games and only takes a few minutes to make a character, so i got the other guys to agree to giving it a try and i had to improvise a world and mission while they improvised some characters. It went fantastic, they started a religious war! Intentionally! We all had a blast, so the next week when it happened again that we didn't have enough players, we introduced the guy who wasn't there last time to Risus and the other GM in the group ran a cyberpunk game and we assassinated a drug kingpin and pinned it on his wife, it was great! This is probably going to be our new thing when we don't have enough players show up.

I played a 36 hour improtu game one weekend me and the squad decided to hang out. It was my first time playing 5e and no one but me and the GM had Tabletop experience, I made everyone's characters quickly and they did a damn good jobgiving them backstories as I did. I decided to play a monk since that was my go to 3.5 class, rolled 4 eighteens (hot damn, my strongest level 1 character yet) and my other stats were good too, so I made 'Jonah Joestar', a monk that killed people by flicking ball bearings at them, and at one point killed a ghoul with a chicken. (Improvised weapons for an improvised game) Comedy is a great way to do an improv campaign, everyone caught onto my drunken master that took his fighting style hyper serious and did wacky things in combat, like pushing a mast onto a pirate captain and swinging around a massive iron door as their weapon of choice. One played an always drunk dwarf (who was granted immunity to all poinsons since he was always poisoned), Edgeboy69, a Ranger who was kicked out of his homeland after branded a heretic for killing a corrupt priest, and a Tiefling Cleric who showed up in the middle of the game unannounced. We didnt have any of the books, only the starter set, and he showed up with a gms guide and PH after he was told about the game, as well as more snacks then I have ever seen in my entire life.

There is a rule for the dungeon they are headed into is NO MAGIC IN THE CAVES. Then one player forgets in the first encounter making a minor illusion of coins. Rooms shift and they cussed in game at the goof. Literally created a level tension they weren't ready for. Second session in the now reset dungeon, they ended up walking all the way to another entrance. Literally didn't need write much because they began to roleplay the session into the wee hours.

ive found a my favorite way to dm is a bit of this and slightly planning. I had my best ever session doing a near zero planning session, only thing planned was the name of a inn, a list of random quests, and the world map for general reference. i literally made up the entire plot as we went, and the players ended up in a nobles mansions being asked by the nobles wife to find her husband who was missing. one player decided to do a detect good and evil, and i decided you know what, there's a pulse of necrotic power behind the bookshelf. what was it, i dont know. what does it mean, i have no idea. but the players are convinced there's some deep dark conspiracy afoot. basically be JJ abrams creating the tv show lost. create tons of random mysteries that have no connection, mean nothing, and have no importance, and see what the players chase after like a dog with a bone, and only flesh it out one step ahead, and whatever the players ask, now is. "i wonder if that was an ancient tome of dark magic the noble was hiding" it is now. "i wonder if hes realyl a cultist", well he is now.

I would like to hear an episode about how to handle non linear time in a session. For example how to handle playable flashbacks, memories or time travel.

Ah! Thanks for this Guy. Would we be able to get a video or some insight on running a campaign with a bunch of... less than Good aligned players? Thieves and cutthroats and "evil" PCs are new to me, and building encounters against Good enemies is a bit out of my ballpark.
