I tried to play a non-Steam version of FFXIV on the Steam Deck several different ways according to various KZbin videos....all requiring text editing and modifying game properties. Hello, is FFXIV working well enough with the steam deck? I tried to play windows version with nintendo switch pro controller in the same way as in the video in a normal pc... It didn't worked very well since the game has not native support to switch controller. I'd like to try with a steam deck, could you give me your feedback?

One thing to note! When you finish after adding the game to non steam games, and run the launcher in game mode, it will bring up a menu that you can pull up the install guide, just select the other option that says "done"

Great tutorial! One thing I would add to it if you have slow internet like I do and want the patch to download while you sleep is to go into your settings and turn off the sleep option on your steam deck. For some reason this won't download like normal games onto the deck and your deck will time out and go to sleep. Found out the hard way this morning.

Just to let anyone know (if you're watching this 1 year later) that this is for XIVlauncher and not the official FfXIV client. Just a warning that this is a 3rd party client and using the plugins does have the possibility to get you banned. I've used XIV launcher for years and never had any issues, but do not talk about it in public chat because any grumpy mods do have the right to ban you for it Edit : That uploading character settings button is something I never knew about and wish I did😅 took me forever to set up everything like I have on my pc

2024 and still works good perfect. When first installing the 90+gb it may bug for a moment and go back to log in screen, just let it cook and should return to downloading stuff soon enough on it's own before 5 seconds elapse.

I'm unfortunately one of few who are afflicted by "Could not obtain Process Handle" when at the last part, already tried turning off the deck and let it be off a while, making sure I'm logged out from the game on the PC for a while before reattempting but still the issue persists. May I ask what system update channel you guys are in? I'm in the preview so I'm not sure if that's what makes the difference here.

Doesn't work. Hitting Play on the XIV launcher after changing the launch settings in desktop mode does nothing but open it and instantly close it. I'm never brought to a login page.

09 august 2023 - this method works! user errors i ran into along the way and how to troubleshoot: 1.) Entering the gaming mode and running the launcher for the first time does not open anything when the play button is pressed. >>> fix by double checking the code you pasted into the Launch Options in the Properties menu. I had the best success via Gaming mode and making adjustments there (desktop mode has the keyboard blocking the menu). The best way to navigate was to use the "" keys at the bottom of the on screen keyboard. very tedious. Code Errors I had: Extra quotation marks, some original script remained, code was double pasted, and the new code was not completely copied and pasted. 2.) scroll lock occurring while adjusting Launch Option code. >>> fix by backing out of the keyboard, out of the properties menu, and click on Steam's Gaming mode start button on the lower left. This should stop it and you can resume back to normal. It occurs when trying to navigate with the "" keyboard and you exceed the line. Have your volume on and up, easy to miss without the audio ques.

Thanks man! So before you boot into the game on steam you can change the controller layout. Just select mouse as one of the trackpads and you’re good to go!

It's not working for me a "Welcome to xivlauncher!" screen pops up stating "in order to use XIVlauncher to play ffxiv on your steam deck in gaming mode, a small manual change is needed to your non-steam app configuration" Please click the button below to open our setup guide (which does nothing, but there is another page opened the has the instructions that I already did).

Sorry, my mistake… Heavensward has a level cap to 60… and I only own Shadowbringers on PS4/5… which is why I’m not getting the exp points on steam deck… all that reinstalling for nothing… my own fault… argh… so please disregard what I said below, it was my own fault. Thanks for the video! So this doesn’t work for me. It works for you because you have the steam version of the game. If you use the free version, after level 60 your character *no longer gets experience points.* That is why the *other* instructions are more “complicated” as you say. I had it installed and working perfectly, when I hit level 60, it actually took me a while to realize I wasn’t getting any experience. The experience bar is orange and has a “forbidden” sign. I’ve tried everything. I’ve played with the settings and it’s taken hours to reinstall everything again, supposedly not the steam version. And still I have that same issue. No experience whatsoever. And the orange forbidden bar. I already purchased the collector’s edition PC version of Heavensward, the original FFXIV on PC. The PS4 physical version of the game and also the Shadownbringers physical PS4 version. And I have paid all through to level 60. I refuse to purchase yet another version that won’t even have my expansions.

Not sure if this question has been asked already, but I didn't see a window for the one-time password (Authenticator) do you not have one on your account and that's why it was not there (which I hope is not the case as having an authenticator should honestly be mandatory now a days) or did you hide it like you did with your username? Otherwise great video, glad to see it is possible to play it on the steam deck and that it plays well, although I am more going to save up for the Asus ROG Ally which is fully windows 11 and almost double the power of the steam deck which i'm excited about as if the steam deck can play it this well the ROG should be as good or better. :) if you get the chance it would be a great follow up if you did a ROG FFXIV test.

You mentioned that you changed the controls… where and how did you do that? I have run into an issue with my installs (both main launcher and xivlauncher have separate game file installs on the deck) on the deck where the pads and sticks move a mouse pointer and not my character, buttons are not working as assigned in steam and only mouse and keyboard are working as intended. This issue is also happening in game with my Xbox controller. I am wondering if it’s due to importing my preferences and layouts from the server as I also have the game in my windows pc on steam. Trying to reset everything to defaults has not fixed the problem.

If you play in Desktop Mode. you have to disable the controller for desktop mode in the steam controller options. Steam - settings - Controller - Desktop Layout (something like this) Edit it and DISABLE for Desktop.

Nvm, now it's just XIVlauncher giving me the steam logo spinning forever and I can see there's a message that popped up, but I can't *see* the message because when I press play it goes back to the loading. Then if I switch to the free trial, it leaves me on the spinning logo some more. Hurray.

Trying to help my friend set this up. Followed the tutorial but when he goes to launch XIVLauncher in Gaming Mode it just hung initially, but not it just closes instantly when lauching. Checked the setup page and it mentions not having any compatibility settings, which was off by default.

so the game works great entirely through steam but my only gripe is the slow download speed through the games launcher. does this launcher fix that issue? i know im a year and some change late to the comment section but i didnt have a deck then lol.
