A trick we’ve used for years, with the approval of the homeowner, depending upon the exterior finish of the dwelling, Loosen a portion of siding, and drill a corresponding hole through the box beam framing . You’ll be able to slide any length you need ,with no joints…. It’s reall fast.

Hey Ben, the printing on the PVC should be facing down, not up. That way the inspector can quickly confirm that the proper size and type of material had been used.

Good inspector should be able to tell the pipe size by looking at it

That’s definitely true. But not all inspectors are good inspectors. It’s not worth taking the chance. Better safe than sorry. There is little value In wasting time arguing with a code inspector-or educating one-when you can show your work.

Do you ever install a metal joist brace under a hole thru the joist for added strength. Some states require it. Thanks for a great video.

A little heat helps pvc bend. Just don’t fold it. When it cools it will be thee same strength as original.

On longer runs it's hard to bend 1.5 or 2 inch PVC and pull or push through a series of holes, especially when working alone. Run a rope through the pipe and tie something across the end of the pipe so you can pull from the end you're trying to guide through the next hole.

Best answer; plan your house accordingly so that your DWV is either just going up through wall cavities or running parallel with floor joists (other than the occasional short little detour). I can't imagine in a new construction home trying to make long runs of rigid PVC perpendicular through a bunch of floor joists or through studs.

Maybe fill the long lengths of PVC with something hot (sand is common, but maybe boiling water) to make it flexible enough to bend a bit more easily? Not sure if that's more work than using shorter pieces.

In my home I avoid going through joists. Its much better to not do this and have some sort of dropped down ceiling. that should be the norm

Drill holes too large and it makes for great mouse runs especially if the run leads to where the food is. That happened at my brother's house. Little devils ate through the hot water dish washer PEX(branched from PVC) and flooded his garage. Mice like certain kinds of plastic. Maybe fill the gaps with foam?

I know there's probably no way to prevent it.... but it seems that you are losing wall integrity when you drill such large holes in the studs or joist. At least I've always thought so. Great Video...

As far as the joists (Joists are the ones which support the floor) if you drill holes in the joists in accordance with the code (Benjamin, mentioned the guidelines) the hole really does not weaken the joist much. A joist is a beam, and the middle of a beam doesn't have much stress in it. The majority of the stress is concentrated in the top of the joist, and in the bottom. So drilling through the middle avoids the high stress areas.

If this was my house and I need to vent two or three places . Would rather go through the ceiling and have 3 o more vents than having to drill the whole house. Work smart not hard!!

Well, the alternative would be ABS, if it's allowed in your jurisdiction, and everything said in this video would apply to installing ABS drains and vents under the same circumstances. What was your point, exactly?
