Woke up to a disabled vehicle today after I left my interior lights on by mistake. Boy I add my thanks to you Stan!! I’m a 70 yr old woman who always had someone else jump start my car. With your explicit instruction (and I watched 4xs to ID all of the parts and find that darn metal screw to attach the negative clamp to on my 2014 Subaru Outback- no help from the Subaru Manuel in that) and tears in my eyes because I have such fear of sparks and possible explosion, I successfully jump started my car all by myself- well, with you talking me through. I am forever grateful!!! Now off to go sea kayaking!!

Stan that was the best instructional video I've seen way better than what I could have done. One thing I check for that is not talked about much is visual inspection of the battery. Before jumping the battery look at the sides of the battery (the battery case) especially in freezing temperatures. . If the sides are budging this indicates the battery is frozen or at one time was frozen. Frozen battery can explode the cells inside could be broken and create an electrical short. Buy new battery you are playing with something that could explode. Anytime you jump a battery have everyone stand back. When your making the last connection, grounding the negative cable to the dead vehicle best to shield your face and eyes at the least turn your face away. These type of explosions are rare but can happen just as you stated in the video.

@@zexelatroxia8295 no, the negative part of the dead battery isn't connected anywhere. They are connecting the -ve part of the live battery to the cars ground. But anyway I think I got it. When you rev up the charging car, the alternator puts out more juice. This can help start the other car. Also, a bad batt can cause more explosive gases, so the ground to car metal is important. I have also heard that when the dead car starts, it can kick back current to the other car and can damage electronics. So I have heard to turn on ac, fans, lights etc. It may be good to do this and see if the other car starts. If not you can roll the dice with everything off but car computers are very expensive. Good video. Cheers
@HowSkills5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I was always taught to rev my vehicle’s engine to help start the other vehicle, just to give it a little extra juice. I hadn’t heard about turning on other systems to reduce the risk of a power surge to the electronics, so I’m definitely going to look into that!
@j.b.95812 жыл бұрын
Good point about the charge surge. Will keep that in mind. Also, if the dead-battery car is in a garage, make sure and leave a door open, or the garage door up a couple of feet at least. There are explosive gasses that come from a lead-acid battery (is it hydrogen-based?). So keep fresh air circulating in the enclosed area!! Be safe.

Beautiful I love this video. Very helpful. I set it up lovely n connected to bare metal but I guess it wasn't solid enough. Maybe somewhere paint interfered ? Switched to black neg clamp on dead battery. Yeah scary lil spark did happen for sure. Anyway to avoid that spark when we have to connect this way ? After I connected to the dead black neg battery post it sparked again like the initial time but this time the alarm sounded and power became instantly available. Gorgeous video. Thank u very much
@HowSkills2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes it's hard to find an actual unpainted/uncoated piece of metal under the hood to attach to that provides a good enough connection for a jump start. You can try connecting to an unpainted bolt on the engine block or where the shock suspension tower bolts are, if you can find one that won't put your cable in the way of a moving belt or fan. But in your case, you did what you had to do to get your vehicle started by connecting directly to the negative terminal. Most of the time, you'll be okay doing it that way as the risk is statistically small, but to be make it safer, be sure you leave the hood on the bad battery car open all the way to give any lingering hydrogen gas around the battery a chance to dissipate before undoing your connections. Keep your face as far away from the battery as possible and always a good idea to be wearing gloves. The possibility of a spark igniting hydrogen gas is more likely when you're removing a cable after the jump start because the gas is a byproduct of the battery charging up.

I thot I was overthinking n paranoid but mind was saying "if gas gna form it will maybe happen during charge n warm etc." So was spooked at disconnect of clamps from both batteries SMH. I think you forgot to say to turn off the car with the good battery before you try to start the car with the bad battery. In modern vehicles with all those sensitive computer modules, you don't want to have 2 different running alternators connected to the same circuit.
@HowSkills5 жыл бұрын
Very true, and even safer is to disconnect the cables before attempting to start the other vehicle. Depending on how long you let the donor vehicle run, the level of charge left in the bad battery and it’s basic condition, it may be harder to jump start a vehicle when you turn off the donor vehicle, but it is decidedly safer. I’m actually leaning towards getting a portable jump charger so that no other vehicle has to be involved.
@lukelorusso1544 жыл бұрын
I have read about this also. In my opinion, it's better to try this way first. I wouldn't try it with the donor car running unless I were out of options.

This is such a good video that I am going to take the trouble to write a comment. You explain everything in such a simple, straightforward manner. Your commentary is slow; just the exact right pace for the viewer to take it all in. You don't use jargon. Most "how to " videos deliver instructions in such a way that the viewer would have to have a certain amount of knowledge to begin with just to understand technical terms. Not this one. And guess what.......I don't even need a jump start right now. I came across this by accident while looking for something else!

Thanks for taking the time to comment…I appreciate that. I always hope my videos get the message across in an easy-to-understand way, and I try to keep improving as I go along. Thanks again for the feedback!

Two excellent points learned from experts.... Best place to put the black clip on the dead car is the engine block. -Less wire for voltage drops while cranking. Also, short cables improve that, so use the shortest useful size. Finally, and most important, turn off the good car before cranking. The good car alternator, putting out about 14v does not want high current draw from the other car's starter. -Could damage the alternator. (and has!) Just two charged batteries in parallel should be enough.

I do it with both on each car and it’s always fine with me
@HowSkills5 жыл бұрын
I’ve done it different ways in the past also, and most of the time, however you do it, there won’t be any problem. This way is what’s considered to be the safest way in order to avoid most possibilities of something going wrong.

That really helps me out 42 years old and had to jump my first vehicle. Had a "car friend" help. It was really disconcerting seeing the spark when he put on the black clamp on my battery. I'm guessing he's not as much of a car guy as he and his wife says he is.

Most of the time, you could get away with connecting the cables up in a different order, but I was wanting to show the safest way so as to avoid any chance of having a problem. I know I’ve done it differently in the past also, but this is now the way I’ve learned to do it. Thank you for watching and for taking the time to leave a comment!

One thing that is not clear, is that when you start the car with the flat battery, does the good car still runs?? or should you disconnect the two cars before getting the bad one started?
@HowSkills5 жыл бұрын
It’s safer for the car with the good battery to turn it off before trying to start the car with the bad battery. And even safer to disconnect both before attempting to start the disabled vehicle. Just be sure to let the good vehicle run for several minutes to charge the bad battery before disconnecting.
