I've been studying maximum power capacity of all of the components involved in wiring up my GPU's and nobody ever explained that the female connector "asks" for the power and the male connector supplies it (through the cable). Now that I've watched your video, the way you've explained it makes it CRYSTAL clear! Thank you Seb for all of your hard work and detailed explanations!

It would good to explain how you got 300 W rating for the cable in the beginning. With research I think I was able to deduce that you have a 16AWG cable which means each cord is rated for 13 amps (10 amps for 80% rule). Using red fox crypto's info about how much voltage is drawn through the PSU for each pin (which is 2 pins and 12 V from PSU) we get 13x2x12 = 312 W (240 W for 80% rule). Just incase anyone was wondering how he knew the VGA cable can draw up to 300 W (240 W for 80% rule). Thanks for the video!

So, let's say I have used a power supply to power my motherboard and ssd and so on. Am I able to use the same power supply to go on and power some of my GPUs? Noting to stay under the 80% rule? Eg: 1 PSU powering my MB+peripherals And then powering x2 or more GPUs and risers (staying under 80% total load. Then using a second power supply to power more GPUs and risers.

A quality cable from a brand name PSU would do much more than 300w. But the limiting factor is the 8 pin. Hence molex is safe for 2 riser if its a 6 pin in psu side or 3 risers on 8 pin at psu (288w limit) also you can use close

Seb you did not explain for cards with 2 a pins and a riser with a 6 pin how many leads you use ? Can 1 l6 pin lead from a server PSU run a riser 6 pin + two 8 pins on a GPU for those 3 connections in total?
@SebsFinTechChannel3 жыл бұрын
Hi. I'm not overly familiar with server PSUs but all the same principles apply to GPUs no matter how many pcie ports it has. If a cards TDP is 320W, it can ask for up to 320W divided among the PCIe connectors on the card and the riser. Look up the TDP of your card and then make sure each individual cable can handle the max power the cards can ask for on that cable.

Very interesting video and answered some questions I had with no answers until now 👍. 1) How to power the extra connectors of the MOBO? With the same cable for all connectors or each connector with its dedicated cable from the PSU? 2) Imagine a GPU with 2 connectors running @ 120W (RTX 3070). Does it mean we can plug in it a 8Pin+risers instead of connecting 2*8Pin + risers? Does it will work?
@jolafriite42193 жыл бұрын
I am also wondering if we can power the 6 Pin of the riser with a cable coming from the peripheral & SATA PSU connector or only from the 6+2 Pcie?

I have a 3060, 1660 Super, and a 2070 Super Undervolted running on a 750W PSU pulling about 390-395 Watts at the wall. I may just get a 1000 W PSU to be on the safe side. 1660 Super is on a riser. Everything has been running fine for the past 24 hours. Thoughts?
@SebsFinTechChannel3 жыл бұрын
Let’s see. So let’s say your rig freaks out and all your undervolts reset and your GPUs go back to pulling 100% TDP, that’s 170W for your 3060, 120W for your 1660 Super and 215W for your 2070 Super. Add another 150W or so for the rest of your system and that comes to 655W which is more than 80% of 750W. So yeah I’d definitely say getting a more powerful power supply is a good idea from a safety standpoint :) Good luck!

But what about feeding two different GPUs female pins by one split cable (8pin from PSU to two 8pin cables (divided by a splitter), one 8 pin to a gpu and other to the second gpu), taking in account that the total amount of power will not exceed the lets say 240W limit. Will they somehow interfere? Is there anything like different frequencies of power consumption between the two GPUs, or some rule like "never plug one cable(that comes from PSU and then divided by a splitter) to multiple different devices, even if the total amount of power will not exceed the cables limits?
@glebpalchin68093 жыл бұрын
In other words, am I allowed to do this? 1. From PSU one 8pin cable 2. Divide it with a splitter 3. Power one 1660 Super with one cable from the splitter 4. Power a second 1600 Super with one cable from the splitter
