If you have ever bought a semi or high end turntable you will see how they are shipped from the factory. The platter is always removed. The cartridge is usually not included and if it is it's in it's own capsule. Sometimes the feet are removed. Every piece has it's own compartment in it's Styrofoam mold. As with anything that is delicate. Try to remove the pieces or isolate them to prevent the Neanderthals from breaking anything as they kick the packages around.

For the most part we do it pretty much about the same way. Just glad to see that I'm not alone although I'd say your 1/2 hour to 45 minutes guesstimate on the time it takes is a little light. I've shipped about 20-25 turntables over the years & I'd say that if I get 1 done in an hours time I'm doing good. Shipped a dual 1219 about 12 or 13 years ago that arrived all broken to hell because it was my 1st & I had no clue about the bouncing/floating aspect. Most duals & a lot of other turntables have screws that can be tightened to eliminate the bouncing/floating a feature I'm always thankful for when its present. Haven't had any damage issues since that 1st dual. Anyways thanks pete it really helps to know that I'm not the only one that is spending the kind of time and effort it takes to ship 1 of these. The next one will be easier for the knowledge.

of course not all of that applies to all turntables, but it is pretty much how I pack things like that, except for one difference. After the bubble, I take a sheet of corrugated cardboard and wrap it around the item tightly. Then I put it in the oversize box. This extra layer helps a lot, especially with irregular shaped items. I learned that lesson the hard way with an expensive statue. In this case I might also fit a piece of the foam under the tone arm near the end of it, with a piece above, why? well depending on the tone arm, it's heaviest at the end, if it gets dropped, it can bend or break the tone arm. if it's not nowhere much to move, it doesn't break, but the foam gives it enough cushion to allow just a little movement to absorb the shock. Granted most of the time I'm shipping much older turntables that are very fragile due to age. I also dumpster dive for packing materials, but I can't keep a lot on hand, wouldn't you know when I need them the most, the materials are hard to find, but plentiful when I don't. I do keep some in my storage shed as back up for those times, but can't spare a lot of room for stuff like that.

I’ve seen ppl spray foam the item inside the box, putting plastic layers over the item and then spray foaming, trim excess and tape up the box and ship. Great video and always put insurance on high dollar items! I always put an extra $100-$200 in insurance, it doesn’t cost that much extra. Usps is known to lose and damage packages.

Just use the blue painters tape...It doesn't leave a residue and holds very well...The Frog tape has the best adhesion...Spot weld the platter, the tone arm the lid etc with the tape...Then you soft pack the box...Easy Peasy...:)

Hey Pete, the only thing I would change is I would put the platter in first on top of Styrofoam, and then peanuts and then the unit itself on top of the platter. Everything is a bit safer that way. I have gotten turntables in little pieces before, so I hope this video gets a lot of views. Take care...

Good packing job. I learned the hard way in shipping and receiving things that good packing is indispensable. I don’t quite agree with insurance though. UPS insurance requires the shipper to file the claim, not the receiver and if you’ve purchased something from someone directly (and sometimes even Ebay) then it’s really hard to force them to make an insurance claim when they already have your money. .

I suggest 8'x4' construction foam from Lowe's or Home Depot. I use the cellophane wrap to secure the platter where it sits naturally as long as I've immobilized the float (if it has it) I then fill the void in the dust cover with bubbles until it will barely contact the turn table and wrap it down with cellophane.

Dont be afraid of shipping costs or charging for shipping. I live on the east coast and any item I sell like that I'll do calculated shipping for it on the listing, adding 4 inches to each dimension and usually 5 pounds to the weight of the item. Better than guesstimating.

Hey Pete, Over the years I always double boxed. In other words, did pretty much exactly what you did and then boxed the result. Now that shipping rates continue to rise (which we pay for because there is only so much someone will pay for an item), I've changed to one box. Fed Ex has cheaper rates but they seem to really bash boxes around. USPS has been better at handling boxes but their rates continue to rise. They have also been good about paying out insurance claims (though I've had very few over the years). Anyway, glad one box has been enough for you. I do think the shipping costs rising are biting into profits. The turntable you just sold might be a good example of that very thing. Once you lowered it by around the cost of shipping, it sold. Possibly worth a video? I don't know. But I do know that because people will only pay so much for an item and shipping. As shipping costs rise, we have to eat the costs. Anyway thanks for the video. It gave me a little reassurance that having gone down to one box was the right choice. - Cheers

Great video Pete, I believe so many resellers really slack on shipping and they cannot understand why they receive so much bad feedbacks or returns. Being a great reseller means a lot these days because most people toss items into boxes and call it done, but that leaves yourself open for bad feedback and returns. Also being aware of how you handle items during that packing and shipping stage is very important because really picky buyers will notice slight defects that were not noticeable in the photographs online when the item arrives if you slight chip something or scuff something while packing and shipping it. Turntables are actually pretty easy to ship I find that items like large fragile items like porcelain figures or stoneware jugs can be very difficult to package correctly if you don't know how to correct package delicate items.

I don't think those turntables you can actually take out the cartridge without messing up the wiring. If the arm and needle does come off by twist you should defiantly pack them separately. Mostly in DJ turntables the needle should be removed cause they can be worth more then the turntable itself. Thanks for the upload I never considered removing the platter.

I really like your videos, but this, this is not good. I own this TT, so I'm quite familiar with it. 1st off, the 3 screw holes are for securing the floating mechanism. Your fix for that wasn't bad, in fact, not bad at all if you don't have the screws. You gotta take off that counter-weight. Otherwise, the bearings can get screwed up. Especially on a higher end unit. Also, take the headshell off. And ALWAYS take off the lid. I've seen soooo many people get their lids crushed. Nice sale btw, the buyer waaaaay overpaid for it. No original mat and the platter weight has the decals removed. I hope it makes it alright, though. Good Luck!
