totally agree with you Pete there is the old saying don't blame the tools it's the man behind them, nope the better the tools the better the job I started my own body shop a few years back and never took any profit out of it I just bought better tools and spray guns, etc better materials welders spot pullers, etc I won't buy cheap but a few years down the line I do classic restoration and everyday jobs and never advertised I am always months booked up with work too much sometimes but love doing a job properly and getting a name for myself.

Uncle Pete, what about us DIY-ers who aren't using air tools, dont have a compressor, and who live in the year 2021....and who are just new to the world and are buying all electric battery operated cordless stuff....like a Dewalt or Milwaukee or Makita....can help us figure out what we need to buy in that arena please?!
@josephfilm733 жыл бұрын
Electric wears out fast. Find a good compressor. They can be found second hand and don't have to take up a lot of space. Just make sure you have a 220 line. If you are going to do jobs, it is worth having. Remember you time is also worth something. If you can use the compressor to spray 2k primer vs buying it in cans, you'll save money. Fill up air in tires, blow out all the crud before spraying, using air to cool welds. Tons of uses..

I have a Bauer 20v 5” DA and it’s been great. I have put 100 hours on it so far at minimum and it Hasn’t skipped a beat. I still use a $40 HF air DA also. It’s been unstoppable also. Maybe I’m just lucky though. Not!

Still in-process of my first automotive paint job ever... Hat's off to the professionals! It's not just the tool. No matter how good or correct the power tool; when it comes to sanding, you either have the experience to know how to use the tool, or you FK up and have to redo everything. I'm still at level "hand-sand everything".

Awsome info u are the man when it comes to the truth I have a question on the viking I went on ebay and theirs so many Vikings and prices and single piston and dual piston
@TheLargino3 жыл бұрын
Go for the dual piston inline sander instead of a single piston. The dual piston sander has power available for each direction of the pad stroke and the single piston is powered in 1 direction and relies on a spring to pull the pad back against the piston.
@deankay44343 жыл бұрын
I would always go for the dual piston “Viking” air file. Sir, you are correct! Hi-OOH! Well Ed, I did not know if that was a dual piston Viking air file in your pocket, or you were just happy to see me!

Now I gotta go look at my air file... I thought it was a Hutchins, but it looks just like your Viking... It's an expensive one, and it is worth its weight in gold. I'll also co-sign on Dynabrade. I've got a handful of their air tools for finishing metal (not just body work) and they are 10x better than the crap you buy at the box stores... I'm digging the Mr. Blue Roads commercial.

I use a electric da I bought at harbor freight, I like them because it’s less wear and tear on the air compressor, doesn’t get air in the lines etc, it is way heavier than a air powered one though
@Titans21383 жыл бұрын
same, I don't like running my compressors constantly unless I have to, like for painting. I have two craftsman 8.4 scfm 30 gallon compressors that I connect together. As long as you set the regulators to the same psi it works perfectly with no need for a check valve. All info I found says you need a check valve so I bought a couple but I couldn't paint with those thing connected, it drastically reduced air flow in my system and then I realized that they're are completely unnecessary. If the regulators are set at different psi then yeah air will leak out of the lower psi regulator but if you match them, no problems. Idk why I said all that but yeah, I use a 7.5 long throw Bauer da polisher/sander and a little tacklife random orbital sander(da sander) that has a short throw for finish sanding or finer sanding. I'm sure the air tools are better but air compressors are so loud and I want them to last as long as possible.

It's actually called polyester body filler, not Bondo. Bondo is a brand. Just kidding Pete, it's nice to see you doing DIY Auto School type videos. I'm sure these kinds of videos are your more popular videos. It's why I started watching you. Keep it up Pete. I wish someone would do a video comparing body fillers. I think that would be a popular video but it would be expensive to buy rage ultra and rage gold and upol filler, 3M filler, bondo, evercoat polyester filler just to make a video. I've been trying to get Project Farm to do something but he's not an expert in doing body work like you are.

@duster713 жыл бұрын
Pete you know you need a die grinder for cut off wheels and a right angle die grinder for roloc discs.The Hutchinson air file is much more expensive than the Viking and a bit heavier.Dynabrade DAs are excellent especially the 3/32 finishing one which I think is number 21035 but I was looking at buying another when and they redesigned them and changed the color from red to blue.Google would come up with the old number,but Dynabraid are extremely light and never leave cornrows,they are about $175-200.After 20 years of complete restos I'm doing prep work for the painter.My Lyme has made me not want to paint because it effects my eyes too much and I don't like blending metallics even thought I have no problem,I also don't like spraying the medium solid clears,I'm so us to the old DuPont 9700 overall clear.I don't like spraying that Transtar shit.

Yes the Hutchinson air file does not cut like the Viking it is heavy and is a better finishing air file. Long throws are 3/16 and the finishing da is 3/32.

I've used Hustlers for years but new filler, like Rage Ultra, sands so easily, I haven't used air files in 3 years. Why beat the piss out of panels with an air file when you can hand shape filler with a yellow 3M long board and purple paper in less time and with a bunch less wear and tear on your elbows and shoulders. Funny, I was going through my storage unit yesterday and came across my last Hustler. I thought to myself if I could get a couple bucks for it, I'd sell it.

Hey pete, thangs for the tge tool brands to buy. I was tempted by tge cheap harbor freight air file and da sander. What total junk. No power air all they just stall out, almost useless. Maybe with 100grit on the air file its a finish too, but i doubt it. I had plenty of air with a 60gal compressor and high flow fittings, but these harbor freight tools just sucked !

National-Detroit invented the "DA" sander. Dual Action refers to the ability to be used as an orbital sander, or with the pad locked to be used as a rotary sander. With the pad locked you can perform the fastest bondo rough-in humanly possible. The 11" Mini-Vike is more versatile than the full size Viking Air file, being much easier to control over varied body shapes. Lastly, you should not run an air file at the "carpal tunnel" speed heard at the beginning of the video, for the obvious stated reason. I'm just sayin'
