How to Save a Rootless Cattleya Orchid (Hopefully) | Sphag N Bag Rescue Method | Moss and Moisture

It happens to everyone if you grow orchids long enough. A slightly, poorly timed repot followed by an accidental tip of the pot led to the complete root loss of this Cattleya orchid. Now what? Moss, moisture, and time is what will possibly save it now.

The premise worked for my cattleya! It fell at christmas, I tucked it back in it's pot. It looked sad, I repotted it in spring and noticed it had no roots. I did this, trimmed off the dead bits, put it in sphag and put it in a mini greenhouse I have with pebble trays. After a month or so it started to grow a new cane! First-time in the 1.5 years I've had it! Thank you!

I also have a cattleya with no roots that I bought at the store. Since I had bad luck with Shag and bag before, I decided to do semi hydroponic with glass accent gems. I did not cut off the roots. I only left the roots and removed the velamen. After about a month or so, I started seeing new roots. They are tiny, but they’re there. I hope you have success with your method.

Thanks for sharing your story and method. I’ll report back on if this method works, and if it doesn’t, I’ll try something similar to your method next time. It’s always such a guessing game what’s best to do. Thanks for watching!

@@TheOrchidHut I'm watching this video 4 months later. Was it a success? Do u think the same method will work on a vanda seedling?

I’m not sure yet, I’m giving it a lot of time. This video gives an update on this same orchid and I talk about my plan for it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6q3fIyHhauhl9k Yes, same method could work for a Vanda…it’s never a guarantee, though.

I did something similar with a Dendrobium..... I THINK (stress THINK) I saved it (I was initially doing water culture, and then had to go outta town for 2 weeks, and house sitters ... Well... Yanno). It's put out 1 keiki (sp) and 2-3 more are appearing - I just put it in bark on Sunday because I think that it needs to get some actual roots before we go to full water culture. It came to me as a rescue, so I'm happy so far!!

Yes, but it still might work for other orchids. Just not this one.

I grow catts successfully in my greenhouse. My first thought was that it is a more desert type plant-and that putting in a wet bag would be something it would really hate. I have one I am rescuing now and I put in in hydrostones(which they don't make anymore) and put it on a heat mat and under 24 hr fluorescent light and with a fan blowing a gentle breeze and just making sure it doesn't dry out too much. So far so good.

Unfortunately, after many months of patience, it was clearly not going to work. One by one the leaves started to die and it never produced any new roots.

Well, it’s still alive, but not doing well. I included an update on this orchid in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6q3fIyHhauhl9k about 3 months after putting it in the sphagnum moss. Thanks for watching!

when you say spray with h202, do u have to dilute or did u just peroxide straight from bottle?
@TheOrchidHut
@TheOrchidHut Жыл бұрын
The active ingredient on the label should say 3% hydrogen peroxide. Anything stronger could cause damage. I’ve never had any issues with 3%, although I have decided not to use it on occasion with super delicate or sensitive root systems.

I know that you know what you are doing but you need to watch videos of some of the Asian men. It's amazing what they do with natural things. Aloe vera and garlic. Sometimes they put them upside down in cup with a little water and the orchids grow roots.
@TheOrchidHut
@TheOrchidHut 9 ай бұрын
Aloe Vera is a natural rooting hormone that can work. Garlic (sometimes mixed with rubbing alcohol) can kill some critters like scale. The upside down trick can work on some orchids because of apical dominance and the plant “switches” its hormones to the root system when that part of the plant sticks upwards. No guarantees, but worth trying when at a dead end anyway!
