This video really helped me understand how the different mediums harm or burn the roots. Salts from ceramics or water being harmful. My water is too hard. My air is too dry, but sphag was too packed and molded anyway. Everything was wrong. Switched to ICU tub, put each poor orchid is a bit of sphag with a spritz of distilled water. Hopeful for improved growth and life. This video was awesome! thank you.

Since I a newbie, I don't even know what type of orchid I am dealing with. I got it from my Mother-in-law who probably got if at Walmart and has never repoted it. When I got it, it was planted in a plastic cup with no air vents which was tightly placed in a decoration, porcelain pot. It had NO roods other than a few air roots. The medium in the pot was dirt, or maybe just decomposed bark, moss... Even I could see that it was in terrible shape. I was not sure what to do with it so I just place it in a pot that had holes in it with bark. That was a week ago. Thanks to this video, I now know what to do.

I’m so glad you’re showing your process for saving orchids, I just splurged on a gorgeous Phalaenopsis, I usually buy the discount ones, but this one called my name! I got her home, and was trying to find the roots. I had to dig down almost 2 inches, her crown was absolutely smashed by sphagnum moss, there was no other media, just completely compacted damp moss. All but one of her roots was rotten or dying, I had to trim them and repot her. I did the same thing you did in another video, used just a bit of the moss near her root to help with humidity and near what look like new root buds on the crown. I’m hoping for the best, it’s such a beautiful plant. 💖

I'm really enjoying my orchids journey, and as soon as I am confident that my orchids are really headed in the right direction, I am going to reward myself with another ❤ I'm going to go look for a video on whether and when I could put any orchids outside. It seems silly to keep trying to increase humidity in a section of house that runs dehumidifiers constantly and it's 70% humidity outside 😅

If you soak your pot with bark in it (with a bit of plastic tied around the top or the bark will float right out of the pot), it will stay moist for quite a while. I do this during Summer months. Also, for the "sphag and bag", I put three stakes in the pot and invert a bag over the top making sure the bag does not reach the table. This way fresh air can get in, the humidity remains, and my mold problem disappeared.

My orchid plant I am sad to say is currently in ICU. I did try to recover and fertilise it carefully as it is my first orchid, I was desperate to recover it. Left it near my kitchen window thinking that the moist will assist.But like you said previously, the heat did it no favours.Most roots have dried out and I’ve cut them all out as mostly dehydrated. Will follow your advice on using moss to assist with root recovery. Hopefully fingers crossed 🤞🏼 more healthy root will reappear. Thank you so much. 👍🏼💖

Hi Danny. Love your vids on rescuing orchids and how to handle situations. Also what to look for. One of my problems up here in cooler climates though is home environment has less sun throughout the year and upon purchasing phals having to moved them from warmer controlled climates to the home which is dryer and cooler. I think the shock from transplanting and also media that is on the verge of breaking down creates a perfect storm for these mass produced orchids to wither. I’ve tried changing to leca and moss with minimal results. And even tried self watering with leca and microfiber also with marginal success. But I have two resuce phals where I unpotted and left bare rooted and soaking them an hour each morning am seeing some better results. One I repotted in moss and haven’t dropped its roots or the second currently in microfiber drapped on its roots is also alive with light green tips. I think the process of bare rooting for a week or two or month, allows bacterial growth to be inhibited through the drying process. But... we shall see. Food for thought.

Hi Danny! I have a question about my two oldest phalenopsis. I had them for about ten years, but they stopped blooming two years ago. And this year no spikes so far as well. They have many very hard leaves. But yesterday I accidentally knocked one over and the bottom leave broke off. I reported the phalenopsis and found, that the root system is there and looks good, but there is no new growth. Just old roots. But the orchid has tons of aerial roots. I removed what was left of the broken leaf and found a ton of root tips under it. They grew about a centimeter from the stem and then died, because they could not break through the leaf. Having a closer look, I discovered, that other roots seemed to have grown up inside the stem and broke through above a leave higher up, where normally a flower spike would come out. But there a no roots emerging at the side of the stem. There is a root on top of every older leaf. Can it be, that they are not blooming, because there is not space left for a flower spike? And can I do something about it. It's the same with the other orchid, too.

Hi, I would appreciate an advice from somebody here. I bought mini phalaenopsis, which had a terminal spike and two developed keikis, but without roots yet. Unfortunately, the mother plant had root rot. I cut sick roots and changed medium to fresh one, first to bark, but she needed more moisture, so now it's in sphagnum moss. All three plants started to fade. So I cut one keiki and put her in sphagnum moss alone. Is there any chance that she will develop her own roots? She has two grown leaves and I spray them with water. Now she continues to fade. I will definitely use one of your tips - put her in some container to increase a humidity. About the mother plant with one keiki on it - they seem well, but the keiki still isn't developing any roots. Is there any way to support her in that? Thank you.

i have 3 like this right now. 1 keiki is totally rootless. The others have a few roots but were still getting too dehydrated on their own in regular medium. Here is what I did for each of the plants. I put 1 plant in a 1 gal ziplock (clear plastic self sealing bag). I also add in a small snack or sandwich size bag filled with damp sphagnum. I fold the opening of small bag back so that it stays open. The plant and small open bag in the 1 gallon bag. I blow into the bag (like a balloon) and seal it. I check on it once a week. It seems to have stopped the dehydration, leaves are firm and 2 of the plants are growing small/new roots now (YAY!). Hope this helps.. They've been in these bags for around 3 wks now and are located by an east facing window.

The healthy one thrived until two weeks ago, and then devolped black spots too and lost its last leaf yesterday 😢😧. I also noticed that the bottom of the bulb started rotting despite water is controlled drying every two days, used cinnamon to control infection, used H2O2. The puzzling thing tho is the roots seems to be getting fat. But I noticed it developed some smell the other day. 😫. What do I do.

And now I'm left with munched off bulbs. I don't want my orchid looking bad forever after repotting it. Please tell me if its ok to devide the new healthy growth and repot it without the old bulbs...
@jenniferamundson155 жыл бұрын
If that spike is still there, you should cut it to save energy. You can cut the bad bulbs, but unless they're rotting you're probably better off leaving them so the healthy parts can use the energy from them. Remove them if they rot or shrivel completely. Look for whatever ate it, I found a huge slug in my cymbidium today that ate some roots, but nothing too bad...

@@jenniferamundson15thank you so much...but I only have 1 new healthy bulb that isn't as mature. Though it has roots, I'm afraid it can't survive once I repotted it alone. Owh by the way, I said shoots as in new growth/potential bulb...no spike.

How long would/should it take an otherwise healthy orchid with no roots to form a root and grow to 10cm?

Hi, depends on the orchid, tipically 1-3 months, but it can be more ☺️

@CarnivorousPlantsAndGardening4 жыл бұрын
If you're orchard is over watered maybe don't water your trees as much and let the rain it but I don't see how you can over water many trees in the ground...

Keep a small fan nearby to keep air circulated will help, a little extra heat too

hi Danny, i'd like to know normally in ICU situation how long will the orchids develop their roots.
@yomairal24776 жыл бұрын
This depends and you need pateince. I have waited months and ready to give up when something happens. Others start quickly. Being new can't tell you which but have been waiting on one for 4 months. Lastly, some will die, been there. Check Danni's previous ICU videos with their follow up. It really educational. I've referred to it more than once.

Sadly, didn't work for me. I think I am a natural orchid murderer. No amount of training seems to help.😢
