Most Americans are bad at figuring out which health insurance plan will save them money. A study of almost 24,000 employees at a major Fortune 100 company found that 61% of them chose the wrong plan for their needs and estimated that the average employee could have saved $372 per year by choosing a different plan. Watch the video above to learn why Americans struggle to pick the most financially beneficial insurance plan for them and how to pick the right one.

you right. If you are young and not getting into crazy soft. I will go to the county health center and pay by visit. I got a plan paying 300 per month for a premium and an $ 18,000 deductible. when will the insurance start to pay? I will give the insurance 21K before they start paying any bills. you know what 21K can do to my savings in 12 months.

Even this video was confusing. The American Healthcare system is so screwed up. Yeah people are overpaying, and probably can save money in the future with a different plan, but when you dont know what health issues you may have in the future, its really just a gamble.

Exactly - they expect you to predict your health. WHAT?! Literally no one can do that. Either way, health insurers make BIG $$$s. If we had healthcare for all, or at least a more simple plan, it would be waaaaay easier and likely less costly. I’m so tired spending hours just trying to figure out how to PAY for my health than CARE for my health

If there was a socialized basis catastrophic plan, insurance companies would be forced to compete for better service. But their entire service model is based on fear of losing everything to a catastrophic health event because NO ONE is immune to such an event. It’s always a possibility. Of course if we can socialize the catastrophe, why not just socialize all of it?

I highly disagree with her regarding high deductible plans. if you’re a younger, healthy person just starting out in the work force, i think low deductible plans are much better and end up costing much less. With my previous company, i had a high deductible plan, and it was so hard for me to reach that deductible before my plan would cover ANYTHING. I made the mistake of thinking that just because I’m young and healthy, that meant I’d never have to go to the doctor and therefore wouldn’t need to meet the deductible. Meaning, any little thing i had to go to the doctors for, i was on the hook to pay it up front, same for prescriptions. I ended up paying over 2,000 out of pocket (which still didn’t meet the out of pocket maximum!!!) plus prescriptions and the and co pays over the course of a year. Even now with a new plan that started in Jan 2022, i didn’t meet that deductible before the plan ended. Now i have a low deductible plan and the experiences are night and day. Everything is covered basically from day one and the prescriptions i used to have are now covered by my insurance. Roughly, i won’t pay over 1200 this year with the new plan, and that’s IF i need to meet the deductible, which is only 200$. After paying 200$, my insurance covers everything up to 90%. I think that wasn’t great advice and she should’ve clarified what types of plans are best for different kinds of people instead of making that general statement

If you get a high deductible plan but have a health emergency then what? Most people don't have thousands of dollars sitting around so they can pay their high deductible in one sitting. America needs a single payer system. We pay more money for worse healthcare outcomes than the rest of the developed world. Also, most employers only offer a single plan to their employees, so it's not like most people even have a choice. Most people will go bankrupt from a single healthcare emergency in this country, and it's disgusting.

I don't think we Americans are stupid to not pick the plan correct for us. The lower deductible ones are expensive so folks ending choosing higher deductible ones with lower premiums. Nobody can anticipate what health services they would need in that year when they select the plan except for planned pregnancy. I am fortunate to get good health insurance from my employer and can afford the premiums and deductibles even with the HDHP maxing out on HSA contributions. But I think majority of Americans are not as fortunate as I am and actively choose not to get health services to save money. I am tired of this narrative of choice and free market capitalism when it comes to healthcare. Also, private insurance is a form of "socialism" too. I only visit PCP once a year, but I am sure as hell that my premiums are paying for someone's cancer treatment.

So yes I may benefit from the highest cost premium if I get injured but most of the time I do 2 visit a year to the doctor. So I end up paying way to much money if I really needed my insurance plan to work I’d rather pay out of pocket then pay $6k a year for two visits and maybe a lab. Yet if I were to get injured and have $100,000 in surgeries it would sort of benefit me until I pay the deductible. Also I’ve worked for 2 insurance co both give their staff $100-1k deductibles for about $5k a year so see how you’re getting ripped off there.

@fbbWaddell

The problem is that Congress is exempt from the crappy criteria that we all have to go thru. Their insurance covers them anywhere in the world and doesn't deny anything at all. The insurance they told companies to offer us, denies as much as possible, hoping we don't appeal, and then denies again because they want to make money, not pay money. I used to have a really good plan and I kept it for 2 years. UHC got rid of it because it wasn't as profitable as other plans. Now, I have an ok plan. I'm not happy, but at least I can afford the monthly premium.

@@AustinWirl Yeah, we do pay taxes like most of the world, and just like you in the US. But the only difference is we get FREE healthcare, therefore unlimited treatment, no hospital bills, no going bankrupt, no monthly premiums. Not having to worry about affordability, not being able to work, getting sick. It's still free if you don't pay taxes for example if you don't earn enough or are unemployed. Diabetes and cancer patients and anyone with chronic illness, even HIV an AIDS won't have to pay for prescriptions, doctors visits, hospital treatment ever. Crux of the matter is that whatever we pay in taxes and what we get in return for ourselves and our families is negligible. Most people pay about $80 a month in taxes and even if that's one person in the family that works - he has his whole family covered regardless of how big it is. There's absolutely nothing wrong with living in the UK, everyone has their freedom, safety and security. It's why so many people from around the world come to live here and regard it as the Greates country in the world. The biggest drawback about the UK is the awful weather most of the year😂

“How to save money on health insurance”? According to this video the answer is have less health insurance coverage. Wow. Thank you to the brain trust at CNBC. This video does nothing to address the reason why people with low incomes may “overpay” for higher insurance tiers, because they would go bankrupt if they had to pay that high deductible (or “liquidity” as the nerd said in this video). Unless you’ve managed to stash a lot of money in an HSA it’s worth it to pay a little more if case of a large unpredictable medical expense because that’s the whole damn point of insurance to begin with. High deductible health plans are a scam to offload the cost of healthcare from employers to employees, by pushing them to put money into HSAs to afford the high deductible when you need to.

I get a high deductible plan at work because im in my 20s so i hardly go to the doctor. I put money in my hsa. My plan is to stash enough money there while im healthy and as i get older and need more medical care go to a lower deductible plan. The risk here is having an emergency but i believe the chances of that are low. Still possible though

9:17 says it all to me. Even if one is honest insofar as what he/she (with family) needs, as this video points out, there is not guarantee that the person (or family) can actually afford the plan - premiums, deductible and/or co-pays! Health care and insurance have become an antithesis to what is purposed to do in the first place: maintain one's health, not bleed people dry of their money, while providing questionable, if not also inadequate health care! 🤬

This story is already inaccurate. Many, if not most, employers only offer ONE plan these days, which usually ends up being a high deductible insurance plan. There is no choice. The last time I had an employer that offered a choice betwern an HMO, a PPO, and a high deducrible insurance plan was about 7 years ago. BTW, my only choice, a high deductible insurance plan, did not save us money as these experts are saying it would. The individual deductible was $6500 and the family deductible was $12,500. So you basically ended up paying out of pocket for everything since it was really difficult to hit those deductibles.

Just reading the title, why do you want to save money on healthcare plans (usually ‘cheaper’ options mean either poorer quality or limited available options)? USA still is the only developed country that requires ridiculous payment for healthcare whereas everywhere else is much more logical and reasonable. HOWEVER…. Your health and well-being is far more important than simply saving some money and cutting off some healthcare plan/options. First of all, you never know what may happen in the near future. Could be one week later, one year later, or even 10 years later. If you personally want to find cheaper options, then that is on you (assuming you are financially stable). Even if not, having a nearly full healthcare package is at least better than nothing. Overall, do NOT cut off ‘unused’ options or so just to save money. Health and well-being is far more significant than money in the long run and over your life (or even partner’s and children’s life).

I worked for Genentech. The biggest culprits are the insurance companies. Consider the major players in AMERICAN healthcare: Hospitals, Doctors/nurses/staff, drug makers, drug distributors and insurance companies. Hospitals: hosting/keeping the lights on of a real facility.... NECESSARY role in the system. Doctors/nurses/staff: running around interfacing w/patients...NECESSARY role in the system. Drug makers: A grayer area here but they actually do make R&D intensive medicines... Could their profits be regulated/capped in a balance to not stifle innovation but reign in profits? SURE. But they also play a NECESSARY role. Making monoclonal antibodies takes serious knowledge. Now here are the two key ways costs get inflated & where Americans get gouged. Drug makers make bulk purchase agreements with McKesson (ticker MCK $50B+ market capitalization), Cardinal (ticker CAH $20B market cap) and Amerisource Bergen (ticker ABC $33B market cap).... These distributors make nothing, they create contracts with end users hiding the prices they pay to purchase... Google the market cap or CEO pay of each of these companies and remember they each pay a C-suite of executives crazy $ and WHAT DO THEY DO? ...(drum roll)..."distribution". Something requiring no special expertise and certainly not something a not for profit entity armed with cutting edge technology could do WITHOUT the profit motive involved. They simply buy in bulk directly from the manufacturer (like Polivy or Avastin or Rituxan from Genentech) and then jack up prices to the end user hospitals, pharmacies and hence patients or rather the patient's insurance....which brings me to the REAL ASSHOLES in this train wreck of a system. Insurance companies: What do they do? Provide a facility for people to get surgery at? Nope. Go to medical school for years and then interact with patients? Nope. Use technology to make medicines? Nope. INSURANCE SIMPLY CHARGES PEOPLE THE HIGHEST PREMIUMS POSSIBLE AND THEN DENY/DELAY CLAIMS until people die or give up. ABSOLUTELY NOT ESSENTIAL. A NOT FOR PROFIT ENTITY COULD ABSOLUTELY ADMINISTER A NATIONAL PLAN WHERE THE REAL STATISTICS OF DISTRIBUTED RISK COULD BE RELIED ON WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY INSURANCE CEOs 7 figures. Please Google "top 10 health insurance CEO pay" and marvel at the excess pay for merely collecting premiums and then trying as hard as they could to not pay claims. Those excesses are funded by the premiums we all pay. Absolutely not necessary. Getting rid of them would cut the costs everyone is always complaining about. We should have a not for profit national healthcare system without for profit insurance. Sure I can hear some express fear about the cost but we'd trade our $400/month premium for a new lower $300/month tax that would mostly only be for those making over a solid threshold. I support Bernie and all who support a national healthcare system without unnecessary middle men & the costs profit pursuits add.
