Someone asked a good question that I wish I would've remembered to mention in the video, so here's an add-on tip: We buy fresh fruits and vegetables weekly on our trip to our local store. We try to buy what's on sale. That tends to mean those things are in season and they're in abundance so not only are they less expensive, they're probably more nutritious. We also have a garden in the summer and grow things like lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, onions, garlic, corn, green beans, peas, pumpkins, watermelon and herbs. We grow perennial fruits and vegetables, too, such as asparagus, rhubarb, grapes, raspberries, apples, blueberries, strawberries, plums and we just planted apricots last year. We don't have big green thumbs, but we do our best!

Do your kids eat vegetables? Ours don't. It's on my top ten list of 'issues.' My son ate great food growing up, but has not taught his children to do so. They like fast food.

+DrummerlovesBookworm Tom and I are iffy with vegetables ourselves so it's been a struggle for us as well as the kids! We do better when we grow our own because it feels exciting to eat what we've produced. Some of the kids enjoy salads, carrot sticks, etc. but others don't. Solomon doesn't even like much fruit. Oranges and strawberries are about all he likes. That being said, we do serve them and encourage everyone to try them. I feel like we'll be more likely to succeed long-term if we take a gentle approach. Our parents method of forcing us to sit at the table until we ate them clearly didn't work well with Tom and I to produce a life-long love of veggies. (One sneaky way I do it is blend them up in our soups so no one notices them.)

DrummerlovesBookworm We used to have issues with veggies, now our diet is largely veggies and fruit. (Mostly paleo). Salads are classed as veggies too, a lot of people don't realize this and it doesnt have to just be standard garden salad. Our favorites are roasted broccoli and cauliflower heads that has "kfc chicken" spice mix on it. When I serve this it devoured fast and ask for more before anything else on the plate. We also love the "kfc" homemade gravy too. Garlic and cheese roasted broccoli and cauliflower is delicious too and you can add other veggies. And super quick and wasy. I add zucchini "zoodles" mixed in with noodles (we use mung bean). The trick is to get a little creative and don't give up if it is a fail, try something else. Also one night a week having a "culture night" were we make and try a food from another culture and purposely picking something with veggies. We just love butter chicken with pumpkin, beans, baby corn and watercress. No need for standard steamed veggies with todays availability in the supermarkets, there is a taste adventure out there. one way I save money is having a master grocery list; everything I want on hand for the month. then I go through and cross off stuff I for sure don't need and highlight the things I for sure do need. all the leftover items are things I look to stock up on as budget allows. this has dramatically reduced the time it takes to get ready to shop and reduced the "oh, dang I forgot to get that" trips.

That's how I do a pantry inventory before I shop. I have everything listed (not just food, put household items, office supplies, etc.) and I go through and check our supplies of everything. It only takes about 10 minutes to do a look over and, you're right, it makes it much easier to stick to fewer shopping trips!

I very much appreciate this video as well as some of your other ones on shopping, budgets etc. You have help me re-organize my way of thinking when it comes to shopping and budgeting. We now have what we call the “Wilson Nook” for our pantry… I now shop once a month on Walmart, and do a weekly shopping and it has helped keep me organized and budget friendly. We used to be a family of five and two of the kids are out of the house and married… So we are a small family of three, but we do a lot of entertaining and constantly have people in our home. So when it comes to food shopping I find that we’re always buying food for those coming over not just those in the household. I rarely use a list :) I keep our meals super simple and buy a lot of the same ingredients to use in different ways. We also don't snack much-(Thankful for that with 5 boys!) The Aldi we used to shop at closed a few months ago. I tried the clicklist option at Kroger just yesterday. Just make an order online, someone does the shopping for me, and I go pick it up. I don't even have to get out of the van! I'm thinking Aldi closing is actually been a blessing as disappointed as I was when it closed. I'm actually spending about the same on mostly organic foods by shopping at Kroger now.

We shop very much the same way! Except I do shop the warehouse stores but only buy what is comparably priced, with buying in bulk keeps the trips to the stores down, which I like. Sales go in cycles so it's easy to buy most everything on sale, like you said just buy up multiplies (enough to last to the next sale) and mainly store brands. A few things I will run in for more often is for quick sales, by learning when the stores will drastically mark down meats I buy and then freeze or can those, along with produce.Another tip to save, with being a sewer, cloth napkins/paper towels helps save with the grocery list.. We've used those for many years now and when they get badly stained, they become dust rags and I make new ones, usually with fabric I've found on clearance (flannel).

Love watching your tips! When we were in our early years and would look for coins under the cushion :-) we only bought store brand items. My kids don't know any different :-) We have a BJ's and Aldi's that we shop at so I go to 3 stores on shopping day (Walmart is the third). I took my calculator and went through BJ's and compared prices to Walmart. Not everything at BJ's is cheaper! Aldi's just opened a few months ago and love their prices. Again, I checked them against Walmart. As for coupons we don't buy the things that have coupons. I know people who play the coupon game, but that takes a TON of time. Some people had to stop because it was getting out of hand. I would love to have a large pantry. For now I have things stored in different rooms. We have a large house, but only a closet sized pantry. Oh well :-) God bless!

I know this won't work for you, but someone else may get help from this: I shop, once a week, sometimes every other week, but what helps me stay on track is... 1. View the store ad. See what's on sale and if I have any coupons or e coupons that I can stack on top of that. 2.Make a list! 3.My Kroger's sends me $5 off $50 or more coupons that are good for 1 week. I try to keep my budget to that. My Aldi's also gives out coupons for $5 off of $30, so, depending on what we need, that determines which store I'll go to. 4.Aldi's has a money back guarantee, sometimes double, on their store brands. If I try something new and we don't care for it, I can always get my $ back. 5. At Kroger, I am always on the lookout for manager's special stickers. It's usually on products that are getting close to the expiration. If I am going to use it that day or next, I'll get it, if it's on my list or too good to pass up. I could also freeze the product of I need it in the future. 6. I also check a lot of product web sites and see if they offer coupons, use ibotta and other similar apps. The calculator does come in handy for figuring out the unit price/per oz. We all have different ways of saving that suits our lifestyles, personalities and locations. I'm blessed to have everything close to me which sometimes makes it harder to figure out what's best to do. I'm currently doing a little bit of everything. I use the Walmart app to get the price match refund on an ecard, coupon a little bit for when I want to buy makeup at CVS, stock up on sales, ordering Azure for the 1st time (I'm so excited!!!) and signed up for a farm co-op and I'll be picking up my first box of organic or non GMO vegetables, tomorrow. I don't know if I'll stick with it but I'm trying to find a way to not go broke while buying healthier food. What would be really cheap would be for me to grow my own food. Maybe someday you could share (if you haven't already) about your garden, what you grow and what herbs you buy and use for medicinal purposes. I'm so glad that this channel has turned into a sort of ministry for you. You truly are a Godly example to follow like a Proverbs 31 or Titus 2 woman. God bless you and the work of your hands.

On the rainchecks, you want to check with your store how they work. I found out our grocery store only does rainchecks on sale items that are in the ads. I found stuff on sale that's wasn't in the ad and they would not do rainchecks. Thank you for sharing your tips.

I will buy stuff not on my list if I have to backtrack so I go carefully the first time down the aisles to not have to backtrack!!!! Love your channel!!!!

Michael was eavesdropping on this video. He said to tell you that I use a combination shopping method - I take a list AND wander the aisles. That way I can spend three, four times more money........???? oops? I have tried to use a calculator in the grocery store but I find that the prices are not on the shelves half the time or don't match when I check out. It could be very time-consuming and stressful to actually get that right. We love to go to the Farmer's Market in the Seattle University District. I have to admit that I like coming up with meal ideas based on what fresh stuff or artisan local foods we run into there. Creative on the fly. And then go home and fix a great meal with chicken nuggets and fries for the grandkids on the side. :-/ xoj

Have you ever thought of growing your own vegetables/fruit? :) it would be such a great learning experience for the children and they could be involved in the planting, growing, and picking process ! You could even incorporate it into your home schooling.. We grew our own tomatoes, bell peppers, and cucumbers during the summer and it was very easy and low maintenance.. Not to mention it was delicious and free ! I had more than enough to share with family and friends :)

Wonderful tips thanks for sharing. The grocery store close to my home does the BOGO deals. I like to stock up using BOGO so that is my money saving tip. Sometimes I will get lucky and find a coupon on the BOGO which really can't be beat! LOVE your channel and it does bring me peace.

I totally hate coupons. I do use Shopkick, receipthog, checkout51, and Ibotta to earn rebates. It can really add up. I also check Amazon Prime and Jet(now owned by Walmart).

I do one big grocery trip once a month and weekly or bi-weekly for fresh veg and fruit. Also bread if I don't feel like baking. I also have a stocked pantry I can all year around. But there is only 2 of us here so I put up beans, meat and soup when things are on sale. I work hard to stretch my $$ to make sure we have a good diet on a fixed income.

I used to go to Walmart weekly in addition to our local store, but it's never been the place that I bought fresh produce. Now I only shop at Walmart once a month, but we still do weekly shopping at our local grocery store which is where we get fresh produce, most of our meat, etc. Tom stops every other week at another store for milk (he gets 14 gallons at a time.) We also have a garden in the summer to eat from and preserve quite a bit for the pantry.
