Savings seeds - there's nothing simpler a gardener can do to save costs, feed the bees and other insects (when the plants flower), and grow more slightly adapted plants. Great advice there John!

John, thank you for keeping us informed. I am a newbie to gardening. I started because I am tired of feeling like crap all of the time and having no energy. I have hypothyroidism and after plenty of research I really believe it stems from a bad diet and stress. Until my garden begins to produce I will be ingesting raw enzymes in tablets form, better food choices and iodine/kelp. God is using you for something great. I have seen some of your other videos where you actually get emotional about what you grow and about our health. Have a Blessed Day from South Carolina.

Thanks to you we are now going to plant a front yard garden via raised beds and drip line irrigation. Love eating what we grow just want more. Keep up producing the videos as you have inspired us to keep on growing. Thanks.

I live in swampy conditions. I spread the seeds out on a plate inside the house for a few days (depending on how large they are). I tape used silica packets, from jerky or new clothes or where ever I can find them, to the lids of tiny jars I recycle (but putting them in bags would also be just fine I reckon.

Sometimes you get really lucky. Last year, a neighbor of mine tried to grow yellow summer squash, but was forced to move, due to reasons I'm not going to discuss here. Anyways, my aunt got the place, and said that I could do whatever I wanted to do to the garden bed this summer. I had a bunch of bagged soil, compost, manure, and vermiculite, so it would have been no problem to fill the bed, (which was originally fertilized with goat manure, but that had broken down by then, and needed a serious topping off) but there was a lot of weeds. So, I got a small sickle, and started to hack down the weeds, when I located the squash gourds. I broke the one open, saw the seeds, and on the spur of the moment, decided to scatter them around the garden, along with those of a few other gourds I found. Got a lot of squash as a result, which can be shown in my videos. Trying to do something similar for next year, although I don't know if it will work.

You CAN know what properties the plant has. Water pepper contains Polygodial which has antifungal and antimicrobial properties; among others. Just google the plant and look at the wikipedia page. That will tell you what chemicals are in the plant. You can then look up the given chemical and see what properties it has.

We are naturally attracted to color. You gotta get in the habit of looking for dried brown stuff There is an empty lot behind my house. This summer I gathered lemon bee balm, sunflower, morning glory, and whatever else happened to be growing there. Happily, no poison ivy. The bugs love the flowers, the birds love the bugs, everybody's happy 🌺🌺🌺 Cat briar and nopal, those are 2 yummy foods lots of people overlook or call "survival food" (I think they mean not-grocery-store food). cat briar is delicious! Plantain, that "weed" grows everywhere, it makes a great anti-itch salve

good discussion/vid couple f things i would add , brassicaas, onions and corn all suffer from severe inbreeding deppression, meening i would not save seeds from them unless i could have at least 50 plants to give to the seeds,to keep them strong,you can save those for one or two generations if they are hybrids an still have vigour but not uniformity, if you want them as an open pollinated line, best to by those from quality seed co. other than that the only thing to consider is varieties that cross with each other like peppers , squash,,bees might cross your neighbors zucchini with your favorite butternut .
@habaristra62485 жыл бұрын
In order to sprout the Canna seeds they have to be scraped flat on a side until you see about 1/8" exposure of the white inside. The seeds will not germinate otherwise. The pods start drying out in the fall. Quite often you can find them planted in public places. They are extremely prolific.
@numbereight8868 жыл бұрын
Must admit saving seeds is really an area I and likely most others want to learn up. Like I'd really like to know how with micro greens. (Given I haven't grown them before, better to know how than spending a season figuring out).

@koutaono51747 жыл бұрын
Daniel Booth hi! fellow filipino gardener here. For storing seeds, it is recommended to store them in your refrigerator. cold(less hot and good amt. of rain)and best season to grow plants here is from Nov-Feb where you could grow your heat tolerant greens(lettuce, pechay/bok choy, etc), then from march to may/june/july is the dry season where it gets hot and less rain occurs(you need to water lots) then around june to oct is wet season when its a bit hot but tons of rain. for more info, check the internet(pinoy exchange growing veg forum, and filipino gardening instagram accounts) or books. For plant supplies(in metro manila), check quezon city circle(mostly plants), Harbest, megamall branch or main(fertilizers, soil mix, cheap seeds), and Colonels Garden(vermicompost, manure, worms, soil mixes, etc.). You can follow me(teen_urbangardener) or many others(firstwefarm, jennycarreon, etc) on Instagram for more updates. Hope you'll use the info i have gathered over months correctly in your own garden! Good luck and god bless!

Must we let the Okra pods dry out completely on the vine like that (just let them be, no watering)? We are concern because if it does, that means that okra raised bed will be occupied for a long long time and we won't be able to start a fall garden...
@gordoncucullu37778 жыл бұрын
You might try cleaning all the lower leaves and stems off, then planting your winter crop right among the okra. After you harvest the pods you could cut the base of the okra stems and let the roots stay in the bed. Another consideration is that each pod produces a lot of seeds. Probably if you left your best one standing and removed the rest you'd have more than sufficient to start your next year's crop.
@3v3888 жыл бұрын
Wow, that is interesting. We could really see how going so will create us planting space while we wait for the (best) pod :). Thank you Gordon!
