TEDx Talks

2 жыл бұрын

Over the last few years, the digital world has accelerated its invasion of the material one. Our time is monopolised by the same four mega-platforms while data-driven mass surveillance and state-funded troll farms threaten the free internet. What kind of internet are we building for the future, and how can we prepare for the worst?
Ordinary Things is an anonymous satirist, writer and documentarian. He makes videos about the surprising and sinister stories behind everyday things for over 600,000 subscribers on KZbin. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I’ll be honest, I firmly disbelieve in the idea of all information being available to everyone. As good as it looks on paper, most people are not intelligent enough to truly understand topics in context or being a surface level. As a result, most people learn tricks and buzzwords to help themselves to form an opinion on a topic rather than listen or read about it for true comprehension. In the current state of the internet this results in great and meaningful creators like ordinary things getting banned or demonetized when someone watched a video with controversial history or context. I firmly believe that in the coming generations information will be restricted to those capable of understanding it. This will paradoxically both limit information that we currently view as common sense and make classified information available to those without clearances. The truly interesting part of this will be how we get there and what other social ramifications we encounter along the way.

He's unaffected by the circumstances, I love it. Remaining casual on stage and being able to use their personal charm is not default for people. I feel that classroom lessons to help young people understand and identify what is Mis & Disinformation would be really helpful. Too many people simply believe and parrot what they see and hear on Radio, TV, and the Internet, and this has always been the main problem. Critical thinking may not suit those who wish to control you, but it would lead us to a much, much better society.
