@@jazzydrawz3792 this is terrible. You should have community colleges that all have night classes in Gaelic. Your govt. should WANT to restore you mother tongue to Scots. Here in Canada we have ONE school that I know of on the east coast that is entirely Scottish Gaelic Submersion. But that's it despite Canada having as many Scots and Scottish descendants as Scotland has Scots. It's shameful here as well. Of course the govt. doesn't help here as our official national languages are English and French. Very good luck to you in your language pursuits.

Only the Scots who went to Nova Scotia/certain parts of Canada had Gaelic. The majority of us of Scots heritage would have come from Ulster or the Scottish lowlands and spoke a language similar to the other Scottish language known as 'Scots'. (There were some small groups of Gaelic speaking Highlanders in the south also who ended up assimilated into the larger community.) But I don't want that to deter anyone from learning Gaelic because it is a beautiful and valuable language!

@@cigh7445 definitely there were Scottish Gaelic speaking Highland immigrants to the Carolinas and Georgia, USA. In my country/Canada our east coast Nova Scotia as you already said still has Scottish Gaelic speakers and an Immersion school but outside of New Zealand (2 million or 20%!) Canada has ALMOST as many citizens who are Scottish or Scottish descendants (over 5 million of us or 14%) as there are Scots in Scotland. We have a strong Scottish heritage here with loads of Celtic festivals, Highland Games and Tattoos across the country. Cheers!

@@cigh7445 of course highlanders went to America. Where did you think they went at the clearances? "In dreams I see the Hebrides". The whole culture of cattlemen in every West. . Who do you think that was? It was Highlanders who brought the cattle culture, finest beef from Scotland, to the West. They were the cattle barons. The Appalachian settlers were Scottish Irish of course, which means Scottish. They just lived in Ireland, didn't intermarry. The music they brought to the Appalachians led directly to country and western then on to rock

In 2013, I had to do research on our family tree due to a family matter that came up. I found out my father had a Scottish middle name, Cummings, which he never bothered telling us, his children, when he was alive. So I made it my aim to play catch up with the Celtic side of our family. I take up Scottish Country Dance and am able to dance at the advance-level, as well as, perform on dance demonstration teams.

HI - I live in a small town in Canterbury, New Zealand. My maternal grandparents were both Scottish (grandfather from Stirling, and grandmother from Motherwell). I've always been more interested in my Scottish side, and the only thing on my bucket list is to visit Scotland. Since reading Outlander, and learning some of the history around Gaelic, I decided I wanted to learn. I have been using DUOLINGO to learn, but I wanted to know how to pronounce some of the words. My mother thinks I'm crazy - "when are you ever going to use it?" But it is a part of who I am, and I feel I owe it to my ancestors who weren't allowed to speak it, to help bring it back!

Just a wee note: I would never say 'oidhche mhath' for good evening - that's 'good night'. Feasgar math is widely used for both 'good afternoon' and 'good evening', Gaelic speakers don't distinguish afternoon from evening. As you say, 'Feasgar math' is often heard on BBC Alba when the news starts - they're saying 'good evening' then. :-)

I suppose it depends what you consider Scottish, as Scotland was always a land of diverse cultures sometimes in conflict with each other, and the Gaelic culture was essentially the loser. As mostly catholic Jacobite supporters they were driven out of the country by the rest of the Scots who supported the established monarch. (They later romanticised the Highlanders in artwork and began wearing kilts and playing bagpipes! Also Scots back then called the language of the Highlanders Irish or 'Erse'.) But yes, I would love if more Scots were into Gaelic. It's an endangered language which is an essential part of this countries history and culture.

Hello, Lauren! I am from the American South, so I have a very identifiable American accent. Even other Americans know where I am from when I travel outside the South. Within the South, we also have different accents but we usually don't notice that with each other much. After Savannah was settled in 1733 by James Oglethorpe, he brought a group of Highlanders to Georgia and settled Darien, Georgia to establish a buffer between St. Augustine Florida, controlled by the Spanish, and Savannah. The Scottish became the ancestors of many if not most of the people in south Georgia (where I am from) and elsewhere . My husband and I reenact the 1700s of early Georgia. I am interested in learning at least the words and phrases of my ancestors.

I'm in the US, I have an interest in language, though my retention is non-existent. I've been studying Japanese for a very long time and speaks about as well as a toddler...my ancestry is Scottish but I've had very little exposure. I'd like to learn to keep my heritage alive. I know a few phrases in German, French, Spanish, and Chinese not enough to have a conversation or get by if I visit the country...but a cool party trick.

keep your love of languages. I'm the same. Can speak multiple languages as well as a pre-kindergarten'er lol! Gaelic is new to me since last year. I can read more than I can speak but even reading is rudimentary. But I love languages and hate to see ANY die out.

I'm Australian my grandfather was from Thurso in Scotland and was a Gaelic speaker he learned English once he started school as his second language. I am interested in hearing how it sounds and think it is delightful that you are keeping the ancient language alive Lauren .

Hi - I am from Seattle WA, USA. I started learning Scottish Gaelic in honor of my grandfather. He was born in Scotland in 1881 & when I was a very wee girl he taught me some Gaelic. He came to the USA in 1910 & never went back to Scotland. Been working on our genealogy and in honor of him started learning on Duolingo (I also use that for Spanish). Such a different language from both English & Spanish. You are right about the sounds and silent letters. But getting the hang of it and your intro to greetings was so helpful. Hope to see the next ones soon.

I’m from America but have a strong Scottish heritage and would love to learn more about my ancestry and ancestral language. I’ve visited Scotland with my wife and she too has Scottish roots and we fell in love with the country, people and especially the Gaelic language. We were fortunate to hear some older gentlemen talking in Gaelic to one another during a tour of the Urquhart Castle!

I’ve just found your channel after searching for helpful resources to learn this lovely language! I’m from Minnesota, US and I’ve always felt such a connection to the Scottish countryside, along with the fact that my ancestry can be mostly traced back to Scotland. I’d love to live there some day and I think it would be absolutely wonderful if I could speak the native language, even if English is spoken everywhere there :)

I really wish I had a way of sitting down with you and learning as much as I can. Not only do I want to learn to speak Gaelic properly but I also want to make sure that when I learn to sing something such as Chi Mi Na Morbheana That my annunciation is precise and correct. Thank you so very very much for doing this.

Just found your channel. American here...I had a great grandmother who would always emphasize that she was "Scotch Irish." So, like many in the United States, I have ancestors who trace back to the unfortunate Ulster Planation in Ireland. My son's father is McAlister...and my son says that every time he hears the bag pipes...he gets the goose bumps! LOL. So I have tried to help him learn about his heritage and find a healthy pride in it. I think learning Scottish Gaelic is just part of keeping that heritage alive.

Albeit I'm german I am fascinated by scots gaelic. By all means try to keep your language alive, it's definitely worth it. The difficult sound you mentioned is not difficult for me as in german there are a lot of cases of that sound, and in SW germany it's coming deep down from the throat, sounds bit like a hissing cat, but much more mean. How did I come across Scotland/scots gaelic ? Single Malt is the easy answer. In the black forest we sometimes run highland games. ,Big Fun !

Most appreciated.. I was born in the states, but raised from a baby by my grandparents in Banffshire until I was 14, then moved back to the states.. My parents were immigrants, but got citizenship through my father when he joined the US military. My grandparents rarely spoke to me in English, and over 30yrs, I've forgotten most of what I thought was correct, and the rest I've somehow forgotten completely.. I'd simply just like to remember again..

Hello!!! I'm Kevin from Kansas, United States. My daughter, from Nebraska, just thought she might want to learn Scottish Gaelic from our heritage and asked me to do it with her. My great grandfather's family can be traced back to the first Gordon in America in the 1650s; a young man of 16 years old from Aberdeenshire, who was captured by the English in the war at that time. His family can be traced to the origins of the clan Gordon in Scotland. We will likely never master Gaelic, but we love learning about our heritage. Thank you sooooo much for your videos. Is there a particular dialect to that area? The phonetics are "very" helpful. Keep them coming!!

Thanks so much for these lessons on pronunciation in Scottish Gaelic! I am from Sarasota, Florida and I am also learning Scottish Gaelic on Duolingo. It is mostly very good but your pronunciation and phonetic spelling made it much easier for me to get the correct pronunciation down! I am leaving for Scotland in April for a 3 week road trip,, I have done genealogy for 45+ years and I have a lot of Scottish ancestry.. I will be visiting a lot of ancestral sites during my travels and It would be very exciting to be able to converse conversationally in Gaelic whilst there! I hope that you will do more of this and your kind efforts are much appreciated! Kind regards, Shana
