The letter и is the reason that my mother never learned how to write Ukrainian. When she was very young, I think in second grade, she and her younger sister went to Ukrainian school. I think it was on the weekend at the orthodox church. My aunt was learning the alphabet in English at that time. In the Ukrainian school they were learning the Ukrainian alphabet. My aunt was having difficulties learning the letter и because it is the mirror image of the letter N in English so it was confusing her. The priest was giving her a hard time and my mother intervened to defended her sister in class. It did not go over very well and they vowed never to return to the Ukrainian school. She could speak the language but being the second youngest of seven children in a household with only one parent she did learn the language as well as a native speaker in Ukraine. They did speak Ukrainian at home but of course English at school and with their friends. I remember during the holidays when I was growing up and we would visit all of her brothers and sisters at my grandmother’s house all the sisters would gather around my grandmother everyone speaking in Ukrainian and fighting to get a word in. None of her grandchildren ever learned how to speak the language. Most of them did not marry Ukrainians so it would not have been very easy to learn at home. Also, they were working very hard to assimilate into the dominant culture in the U.S. at the time. Perhaps you have heard of the melting pot, the U.S. is made of all kinds of people but just like a melting pot for Turing scrap iron into new metal all the cultures melt in the pot and lose their distinctive character and out comes new Americans. These days especially with immigration from the Spanish speaking people from Mexico and other countries the maintenance of one’s previous culture is better tolerated out of necessity.
