Great lesson including a bit of Irish mythology, and how lovely your pronunciation of "puppy" sounds. Thank you and cheerio.

This is fantastic! I do a lot of dog sports with my dog, so she’s a big part of my life, but the language I need to talk about her is lacking from the basic Irish courses available online. How about a little video on the Irish dog breeds? The Irish Terrier, Irish Wolfhound, Irish Deerhound, and of course my favorite, the Irish Setter (sotar rua!)

I wonder why the word for bark is tafann. Usually I imagine those sound words, like bark of a dog or hoot of an owl to sound like the word it describing. Like howl or ruff. Was there a particular sound it was mimicking?
@BitesizeIrish2 ай бұрын
Good question! It is hard to say. A lot of the time a dog's bark sounds like 'arff', which is not a million miles from the first syllable /thof/ of 'tafann'. The words that we use in various languages to name an animal's sound/call do not necessarily always correspond to the sound that the animal actually makes. In English sheep 'bleat', for instance, rather than 'baa'. Donkeys 'bray'. Owls make a range of sounds, not all of which sound like 'hoot': kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGSkgXegnsp6qs0

@@BitesizeIrish But then I wonder what their Irish word is? Surely there are other Irish words besides tarfann for the other sounds a dog makes, or did they adopt other languages words? I know this is a bite-sized vid, so you didn't need to add more. 😀

Other words for 'bark' are 'amhastrach' and 'sceamh'. They are not particularly onomatopoeic. Some words for a dog's howl are 'glam' and 'uaill/uaillfairt'. Growl is 'drantán'. Snarling: 'ag drannadh'.
