Two scanning tips: (1) much dust comes from clothing, so wear something sleeveless, or roll up your sleeves, or even nothing at all. (2) Use the true measured frame size from the camera when fixing the aspect ratio, because the scanner and film may have some anisotropy. For example, if the frame dimensions are 36.0 x 24.0 mm, and you scan at 1600 ppi, then the image must be 2268 x 1512 pixels. To achieve this, start from a scan that includes some of the frame, then after making any colour, lightness, and contrast adjustments needed for the raw scan, rotate the image so the frame is aligned with the principal axes, then crop the image just inside the frame, and finally scale the x and y directions separately (i.e. free aspect ratio) to get the right number of pixels.

I inherited this old pentax camera a few years ago and decided recently I was going to "restore" it and make it usable again. I really want to look into in home development just because I dont want to spend a fortune having someone else do it for me but my biggest concern was turning the negatives into actual pictures. I had no idea that you could just scan them in which is going to make my life significantly easier. Never really been into photography outside of taking pictures on my phone but im seriously enjoying learning about all of this stuff.

I have one question. I made a simple adapter for the 35mm film out of cardboard so that it hold's it. Then I put my phone on a white background over the film and scanned it. My All in one doesn't support scanning films, as it doesn't have a transparency adapter, nor does it offer one to buy. That's why I made my own. It work's, It's just that no matter what color I set as a background color on my phone, the scan always comes out as grayscale, even tho It's a color film. How can I get it to scan in color? The all in one is the Epson SX130.

hi. i saw the video posted before this one in regards to the steps. my question is does this only work for developing in black and white? or do i have to buy a different chemical? also how big would the image of a 35mm film be once its scanned
@edpavez
@edpavez 8 жыл бұрын
+katie a yes, this is only for B&W. if you want to do colour you need C-41 chemicals, which require more steps. How big a 35mm negative will be once scanned depends on the scanner and how big you scan the image. It's like asking how big will a digital picture is. ;)

Been waiting for this video for ages! Thanks heaps! Anyway, outta curiosity, what settings a were you shooting on in your Canon A1 vid? I could kinda make out that it was shutter-priority, and you had the highest shutter speed selected. Is that right? Because I could not see properly. I ask because I just bought an A1 and I wanna sorta get the grainy look you had in the pics that you took with it.
@edpavez
@edpavez 8 жыл бұрын
+Jude Jennings I honestly don't remember, but I tend to shoot in shutter priority. bare in mind the grainy look is the film being pushed a little in Lightroom. APX doesn't naturally look so contrasty.
@boneless0brainless
@boneless0brainless 8 жыл бұрын
+EduardoPavezGoye how do you push film in Lightshop? I thought it could only be done when developing the film. Do you think a similar look could be achieved with colour film? Speaking of, you should shoot with colour film sometime, would love to see the results!
@edpavez
@edpavez 8 жыл бұрын
to push in Lightroom you have to use the exposure and light it up a little. I guess you can get the same results only by processing, but I'm not exactly sure how, since it depends on too many factors (and on what you are exactly looking for). I don't shoot colour in London because it's too expensive, but in my flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/profetaparanoia/ you can see some colour shots taken with my film cameras!

Cleaning the scans from dust is something i hate the most, this is exactly what i've been trying to run from with analogue photography (Lightroom), so i clean my whole room and all the dust in it, then negatives with anti-static cloth and rocket blower, and only then proceed to scan them :) Man, right now in half an hour i'll be scanning in a very clean room hahhahh. Film made me a very tidy person, to the point it's a bit paranoid i guess.

there's no universal answer to that question. depends on the scanner and the DLSR. I tried the DSLR method at the very beginning, and wasn't impressed... but technology advances so fast that maybe with today's DSLRs the results can be amazing. i just don't know, since I sold all my DSLR equipment.

Sherlyn Lavenia they come for free with the scanners that can scan negatives. If yours doesn't have them, it is probably not designed for scanning film. In that case, you need to buy a special reflective holder, which is more expensive. I highly suggest you to get a film scanner (like the Epson V550 or V600, or the 4490), otherwise your analog journey will be quite frustrating.

Gracias y saludos a Fran!!
