I had been thinking about sealing my truck bed similarly, but I was afraid to use the wrong sealant. I did a ton of searching to see what kind of sealant would work best for my factory spray-in bedliner. Your video was the only one I could find that covered this idea at all - it gave me the courage to give it a try. I ended up using black "3M Marine Adhesive Sealant Fast Cure 4000 UV". It went on easy and I think it will work out fine, but time will tell. Anyway, thanks 2-years-ago you!

@MattHyatt, I'm glad my video helped you out! I'm curious how that sealant will hold up. Are you running a tonneau cover?

Great idea. Plan on trying it on mine.. but my question is what basket is that in the front on the retrax T slott?
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades Жыл бұрын
@jimtruxell, it's held up well for 6 years now. That basket is the Rhino Rack Mesh Half Basket. Unfortunately Rhino Rack has discontinued their mesh basket line for the pioneer platform. You might be able to find one floating around online. I absolutely love the basket for storing Plano cases, jerry cans and firewood.

Great video. I am wondering whether one can use the black silicon gasket sealant. That should hold too I think. Will check on what the temperature range is for it. It may be expensive than caulking though. However, I have a Jeep gladiator and the bed liner on it to solid to not leak so I need to just seal around the tonneau cover to seal it up.

@Soumen Bhattacharya, thank you! I agree a black silicone may look better in the long run. I had trouble finding any locally at the time so I bit the bullet with clear.

all pickup trucks should come with the bed sealed tight, a tonneau cover bare minimum, and a rollout bed tray with waterproof organization bins built in. Otherwise, might as well be in the 60's still. ESPECIALLY since the all cost near 100k these days...
@jacobsupgrades

I agree, with the price of trucks these days the inside of the bed is an afterthought. With the exception now of the tailgate wars a tight sealed bed is often overlooked.

What about the dust that comes in from the sides of the tailgate? those are large gaps that seem impossible to fill up unless you plan on permanently sealing your tailgate with caulking. Any ideas on that ?

Im curious on an update? How did this hold up? I’m preparing to do this to my 2021 F150, however I’m worried the holes on the sides of the box would let in a substantial amount of dust?
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades 4 ай бұрын
@@ashleyappel4282 so far the silicone sealant has held up great and not let dust in. I only wish I had spent the time to find it in black. Yes I do believe the holes let dust in after prolonged driving on gravel, sand or dirt. Another viewer commented on using plastic plugs to cover the holes up. I've thought about doing this I just haven't purchased any yet to try them out. Here's some assorted plugs I've had my eye on. amzn.to/3ypX4ao

What about for the tailgate? I think when I washed the truck that most of water came from there. What exact calk are you using?
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades Жыл бұрын
@Chellebeller, I use TruXseal Universal Tailgate Seal - amzn.to/3kyXKTd to seal around the tailgate of the truck to keep dust and water out. I used GE5000 Advanced Silicone Clear - amzn.to/3MFi27q for sealing the truck bed. Make sure you leave the small drain holes in the corners open so water can still drain out. I cover mine with blue painters tape to keep dust out on dirt and gravel roads when there's no rain in the forecast.
@alexg0742
@alexg0742 2 жыл бұрын
So after a few months now do you recommend it still? I guess dust can still get in thru the drain holes but not as much...
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades 2 жыл бұрын
@Alex Garza, yes I still recommend it if you plan to add a tonneau cover or camper shell. I will say I am still getting some dust in the bed but I think it's getting in around the tracks in my Retrax cover more so than the areas I sealed off. I would also recommend black silicone if you have a textured bed like I do.
@brucewayne857
@brucewayne857 3 жыл бұрын
So why didn't you seal the tailgate sides? It seems that allows more dust in than the bed itself would.
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades 3 жыл бұрын
Bruce Wayne, I did have an existing bulb seal vertically along the tailgate and did seal on the bed side behind the latch but missed showing me seal it on driver side. Is that what you are referring to?

Michel, Yes this has helped reduce dust intrusion in the bed. However I am still getting dust in the bed on off pavement trips and now thinking my biggest culprit is my tonneau cover.

You could use masking tape for a cleaner job. Or a paintable prior to painting. The clear looks bad imo. But if it works, to each their own. I wouldn’t buy a truck that leaks 360 degrees around the bed. Lol

The silicone is ok to use? I thought silicone sealers would make it difficult for paint or repairs in the future???
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades Жыл бұрын
@ehejke, this is true silicone is impossible to paint over. Since my truck already has the bed liner in it I don't plan to paint the bed or have it re-lined anytime soon. But if your bed does not have a spray in liner and you plan to have one in the future it would be best to hold off on sealing it with silicone until after instal of the liner.

@@jacobsupgrades did you degrease the bed first? What kind of prep measures did you take so the silicone would stick? I didn’t get to watch the full video it kept freezing on my phone.

@jacobsupgrades 2 жыл бұрын
@@Subi_doo I wiped down all the seams with a wet rag and it’s been just fine. No issues with silicone peeling. My rolling retrax truck bed cover is still letting rain and dust in unfortunately. But the silicone has at least helped minimize it.

Everything you did dont stop water. Only dust maybe from gettin your truck bed. But now that you did that if water gets in it will be trapped. Thats not healthy for the bed. Good luck
@jacobsupgrades
@jacobsupgrades Жыл бұрын
@resdawgs, your right water does still get in around the Retrax cover. This is why I left the drain holes open in the rear corners to allow the bed to drain out. It helps to park with the front end of the truck uphill if I know it's going to rain to shed water off the cover and out of the bed. If it's not going to rain and I'm in a dry environment I'll cover those holes with blue painters tape while driving gravel or dirt roads to help keep more dust out.
