good video. I would plug the iron in about 10 minutes before I'm ready to use it. So it's nice and hot when I get ready to do the seam. That way it doesn't take so long. I think you could turn it up a notch, usually between 3 and 4.

Hey man, I've laid carpet quite a few times over the past 5 years and I have to do a seam for the first time today. Thanks for posting this tutorial, simple and to the point. We use the square blades and the knife that goes with it, because their designed when used with a row cutter to only cut through the carpet backing and not any surface below. Also there are 4 sides to them, so if you buy a box of 100 that's 400 blades. Its cheaper that way here in the states. The Stanley blades only have 2 sides and cost more. Thanks jojo hope that answers your question.

@TORCHBROTHERS
@TORCHBROTHERS 11 жыл бұрын
It's very important to seal the edges on a berber carpet so they don't fray.most plush carpets we do not seal the edges because the sealer will make the yarns hard.if the customer feels that walking on it barefoot.there is no fixing it with out redoing the seam without the sealer.most plush carpets don't fray at all.it's the berbers that fray,and since the loop of the berber carpet is sort of hard in the first place you wont feel the sealer.but plushes are so soft you will feel any hard spot.

place the kicker before the tackstrip and push down hard on the head while you kick so it doesent slide and rip the carpet. as for stairs measure your with and length and use a metal straight edge to cut.than square off the end that starts at the bottom with a building square.start at the bottom stair staple on bottom,put kicker on tread in the middle of the stair and push as hard as you can .staple than work your way to the left corner stapling as you co than the same to the right.

How do you join seams when you have the foam backing already attached? (Kangaback)
@TORCHBROTHERS
@TORCHBROTHERS 5 жыл бұрын
Oh that kangaback is cheap carpet. I would highly suggest not buying it if you have to seam it. You have to cut the edges straight just like in this video but then you have to glue it to the floor. It never turns out very well. That stuff is really meant for small rooms that you don't have to seam. And it wears out very quickly because that backing breaks down fast.

Please do a video of berber seam with multiple head seams and a crazy pattern. The estimaters never allow measurements for pattern end up always having extra head seam drives me nuts.
@TORCHBROTHERS
@TORCHBROTHERS 5 жыл бұрын
Oh man I feel for you . That sucks doing all those unnecessary seams. I am my own estimator and always make sure there's enough material . And I actually talk customers out of going with those funky patterns because it seems like no matter what you do you can never line them all up perfectly. Luckily I have been at this over 30 years now and can pretty much pick and choose my jobs.and also have pretty good ability of talking customers out of doing stupid things like that. You really need to have a talk with whoever is doing your estimates and explain to them that this is not a good idea especially with Berber carpet. You want to avoid as many seems as possible. And remind them The More carpet they sell the more money they make. And to tell the customer they're going to have extra carpet left over because it is a pattern. Good luck my friend.

It's a lot of hard work, and a real pain in the ass sometimes. The best advice I can give you it is always be very professional and do a good job. Once you build a good reputation you can name your price. And definitely save your money. I saved money over money career and bought several rental properties that I now have for retirement income. Don't get into the stock market or anything like that. Don't even set up an individual IRA. All the banks do is slowly steal your money. The best way to spend your money is on things that will make you more money. Don't buy toys or blow it all on girls. They will both leave you broke. Trust me on this bud. the sooner you can save money and get the hell out of this trade the better. Your knees will not last forever or your shoulders.

Also too if you have a place to store it save any good used carpet you pull out. And the occasional leftover room size remnant And advertise it on Craigslist with installation available. That will hook you up with some landlords. And other potential customers FOR FREE. 100% profit. And always demand cash. Trust no one's check. Best of luck to you.

Here's a good tip for you to make your seam even more invisible regardless of the type of pile you working with. Next time you do a level loop job, cut a piece of carpet the size of your iron and cut a hole for the handle and put the piece upside down over the iron. This will keep the carpet off the hot iron and prevent any distortion. I've been doing this for over 20yrs and it works great. P.S. I also blow the steam out before I drop the carpet into the glue too.

The best advice I can give you is use cheap seam tape .Cheap seam tape has less glue and just works better on cheap carpet ,and put your iron on about 3 and go a little slower, also make sure you use a good seam weight spend the money on one if you don't have one they are well worth it in the end.Cheap carpet is crap. Make sure you tell people right away there is no such thing as an invisible seam with that crap. No guarantee.

You should always seam seal your edges so it doesn't delaminate.The manufacturers say even with that twist Knapp that you should seal your edge 😂.Dont know why.And I always use a toilet lid for my weight.The porcelain in the lid keeps the seam from peaking
@TORCHBROTHERS
@TORCHBROTHERS 6 жыл бұрын
Aaron Payne yes you are right the manufacturer does recommend that you seal the seams on all carpets. But I find that their cheap crappy milk seam sealer they want you to use , if it gets on the Yarns makes hard spots. So I prefer not to do it and just slowly push the two edges together getting a little bit of the hot glue in there to do the job. As far as the toilet tank lid goes they do work very well. But if you're working in someone's house and they are around watching you it doesn't look very good. Especially if they are germaphobes. I try to be as professional as possible around customers.

I don't understand. You cut off an inch of carpet with a straight edge using your knife as a guide to keep it straight. The only way doing that would work is if the carpet was straight to begin with, or you would end up with the same edge you started with.
