In this video I share my techniques and tips on how to see values or shades using Pastel Pencils. Also I share more information regarding colour mixing, discussing cool and warm colours. The human Eye, according to research on google, sees around 1 million colour tones... so artists need to simplify these into a 9, 7 or 5 value system. I will be discussing my favourite which is the 9 value system. If you find value in this video please subscribe, like and share with you friends... would appreciated the support.
My passion is to help you to create realistic and soulful portraits. If you found this video useful please give it a like. Be sure to comment and say hello and let me know what kind of videos you'd like to see.

Tonal values are fundamental, but in a career that has kept my out of my studio more than in, I find time pressures have me rushing to colours. Sometimes this is quite satisfactory for the average viewer, but I see the flaws and am never satisfied. I appreciate your explanation of tones in this video, It would be interesting to compare the usefulness/importance of selecting from the different tonal scale options (e.g. 5, 9?). Your visual aids are great, helping to identify examples within the tonal range. I have set myself an assignment: go through my various media and try to identify the elements you mention. First, tonal range, then, warm/cool variations, then opposites on the colour wheel for use in delineating light and dark instead of relying on the (lazy>) white and black shades. Thank you!

Thank you for your video. Values; this is more important then how do I draw a.... I trie to find my values in photoshop or app before drawing, or try to make a posterize..... But, If the cold and warm colors would have names....for instance from Faber Castell pit pastels, witch reds, yellows, blues and earth tones would that be then? Greetings from the Netherlands 😉👍
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt 4 жыл бұрын
Values are so important for realism. All I can give you is the colours that I would use for Oil Painting. If you google these you will get the colour... Cold Red... Alizarin Crimson. Warm Red... cadmium Red. cold Blue... Prussian Blue. Warm blue... Ultramarine Blue. cold yellow... Cadmium lemon. Warm yellow Cadmium yellow earth colours, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre. You can match these colours to your pencils. All the best :-)

I just stumbled upon your channel. And Im very glad I did. Very very useful information. But I am soooo very confused on color theory for portraits and specifically your technique. You talk about using secondary colors for shadows. I can't find anything on this technique. Maybe im not googling it properly but I would really like for you to go in depth on it. How exactly it seems so easy to use primary colors and secondary colored shadows. And how you view them in skin. Maybe you could make a video going really in depth about it and demo three different types of skin tones and how you see that in reference photos as well. Or if you could send a link my way on this technique and how you discovered it that would be great too

I dont understand the tone values on the strip are in black and white but we are drawing in color. Shouldnt the chart be in color cause I dont know which color is a midtone and which is a lightest dark or darkest light? The effort is greatly appreciated though.
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there... put it this way... if you where drawing in graphite pencil B/w drawing from a coloured image you would work out what the colour tones would be in grey tones (or values) so you can draw it correctly. It is just in reverse you compare the colour to the value chart and decide that it is that shade or value tone of colour. Please check out in my channel 'How to draw a Nose' as I give the number reference on the reference image im working from. Hope that helps. Take care 🙏🙏

I don’t see how you use the value scale. I put my reference in black and white and then in posterize in 3 or more levels to see the values better. With only squinting my eyes, I can not see the values enough. Is it possible to go in dept with this? I think more people have this problem. And then when is it warm in a value, and when is it warmer? I’m sorry for al my questions the last days, but I want to understand it.

It's hard to put in words. Will sort a video out about this subject at some point. But for now... when you see the warm red it feels warm... if you look at a Allizian crimson Red it feels cold. So this applies to the other colours. 🙏
@melkmb
@melkmb 3 жыл бұрын
You can think of it like this: if you look at red on a color wheel, in one direction it goes to orange, yellow, green. in the other direction it goes to your fuchsia, purple, blue. Every red pencil or paint you have will have a different temperature when you compare them. If you compare the Allizarin Crimson and Cadmium Red, the Allizarin Crimson will lean more towards the purple, blue direction and therefore feel cooler than the Cadmium Red that leans more toward the orange, yellow direction. This is because they aren’t pure pigments. So just like you mix paints, they mix pencil pigments so they add more of a blue to a red to get the Alizarin red and more of a yellow to get the Cadmium. This is true for all factory made pigments. So for your greens, they will lean more towards yellow or more towards blue. It takes practice and maybe swatching all your pencils or paints to see which way they lean towards. Hope this makes sense. I’m new to art and color theory but I’ve been doing a lot of reading up on it. If you want to really understand it better, I suggest searching for some watercolor videos on KZbin on how to mix colors that don’t look muddy. That’s how it clicked for me. If you want I can send you the exact video that really helped me understand it. I would have to find where I shared it on one of my Facebook art groups.
