This is one of the most interesting videos Andy has put up. I've got my Model Y up for sale privately at the moment. From past experience callers expect to haggle and feel they're getting a better deal hence why I always allow some wriggle room. Many others have commented on Andy covering the actual transaction which I hope he does. We're all aware of the scammers out there. I've always made it clear to any buyer that the car will not be released till I see the money in my bank account. DO NOT let the buyer show you from their phone that the money has gone from their account even though it's not in yours. Andy please comment, us technophobes will take notice of you and your IT knowledge. Of course as a buyer you also need to know the pit falls. Great topic.

Private sales mainly work with things that don't have or ever need loans. People going to the bank to get a cash loan for a car they are looking for or cash buyers are getting rarer and rarer. Also the warranty on cars private/dealer and its just a lemon, it can really end up costing you. So buying at a dealer, unless you are just going to bid so super low that no matter how shit it is its still a good deal, its the best choice for many.
@ericpisch27329 ай бұрын
selling privately can be an absolute ball ache, the constant stream of chancers making ridiculously low offers, the army of scammers out to rob you, the tire kickers and time wasters, most people can't even read adverts properly and ask questions that are answered in the advert... not having to deal with those idiots and not having to worry about theft and fraud and having a fast and easy transaction is well worth 1500 quid to me. although the higher value of the car the less percentage the handling of sales fees work out to be.

Would you want to buy an EV privately without knowing it's full history of how it's been charged up and used. The majority of people only want new EV's on lease because if it goes tits up they can just give it back, they are a throw away item like everything else powered by batteries, that's also why their depreciation is so massive. If your ICE car goes tits up even a new engine is cheap compared to a new battery. Main dealers don't even want to buy them back and they struggle to sell them through auction, the same EV keeps going through week after week getting cheaper and cheaper and still not selling. There has been a 29% drop in ev sales in Germany and also a big drop all across Europe, they have also dropped in the uk, I have a feeling the ev bubble is about to burst. I am an electrician and been fitting domestic chargers since 2012 and the majority of our customers have already gone back to ICE or hybrid. What Autotrader ads don't tell you (when pricing) is whether the car still has a valid manufacturer's warranty or not. For that, you need to see the service history. So if you are selling a car with a valid warranty in place, that's worth advertising. Even some dealership cars don't have that, as I discovered recently when attempting to buy a used e-Niro from a well-known online car dealer that advertises (a lot) on TV. The disadvantage as a buyer from buying privately is that there is no warranty on cars that have an expired (or invalid) manufacturer's warranty. I remember buying our first car (a Nissan Micra) from a dodgy local dealer with a 3-month warranty included. The engine completely failed after 6 weeks. They had to tow it back to the dealership and fit a whole new engine.

I even had one lad that turned out to be genuinely interested but was making life difficult before he even viewed it and I refused outright to sell him the car, he got his dad to buy it not realising I'd see the address was the same! My usual trick when someone is viewing my car for sale is to answer a fake phonecall from a fake potential customer and explain "well someone's viewing it, but if they don't want it, it's yours"...

Not for EV's in the Netherlands: currently private people can still get € 2000 subsidy, which they only get when buying from a reseller. So when I would sell my car privately, then I at least have to go lower then the price would be if you count in the € 2000 subsidy. The subsidy scheme going end the end of this year, so in the near future it might be easier. But the other issue is: not many private people, are willing to pay € 10.000 to a private person. Thats what makes selling a car private difficult: you cant offer any warranty, something a reseller has to do by law.

The key problem with selling an expensive car privately is that not many people have 30 grand in cash and people spending that kind of money would normally prefer to deal with a business (i.e. a dealer). I was lucky, I managed to sell my Kia Soul EV privately for 31k in 1 day, but that was at the height of the abnormal pricing in 2022 because of shortages. It was bought by a dealer who knew he could put a margin on it and shift it, even though it was only 2 grand less than a new one.

I don't know if I would replace the tires. I would account for changing them in the price and be clear in the description with that it will need new tires soon. I think that is a big consideration when buying privately and I really don't think that was covered fully in the video. Certainly the detail of the different types of transaction was covered but it wasn't mapped against against the risk different level of risks involved. From a purely financial point of view then all the explanations stack up, but that is not the full picture. Know someone who bought there car every 3 years and sold it straight to we buy any car and made 2-3k every time
@ElectricVehicleMan9 ай бұрын
You get buyer protection from a dealer and main dealers especially. Depends on the car tbh. Very little to go wrong on an EV so as long as it all works and no unusual noises etc then I’m usually ok with buying that. Piece of mind costs. And there’s always aftermarket warranty too.

Why would anybody buy any car privately for more than they can get one from a dealer? Zero protection buying privately
@ElectricVehicleMan9 ай бұрын
They wouldn’t. It would be more expensive from a dealer. Have we watched the same video? 🤔

@ElectricVehicleMan9 ай бұрын
@@adamspencer95 Completely different spec! It’s not the same car. 🤷♂️ And you can just check the car out, it’s not difficult. Or buy a warranty. Or get it checked beforehand.
@stevebeever24429 ай бұрын
@@ElectricVehicleMan You can do all the checks in the world. Buying from a dealer gives consumer protection rights by law. Buying private gives you zero. You have no protection and take 100% of the risk
@ElectricVehicleMan9 ай бұрын
@@stevebeever2442 “You can do all the checks you want!?” Of course you can! Thats the point. What do you think mechanics are for. 😄 A dealer gives you 3 months, you think that’s worth the £££ extra? I could buy a BMW 1 year warranty on this car for about £1k for a year. Even adding that on to the price it’s still 4 figures cheaper. Besides, this is about selling, not buying.

What is your advice in taking payment for something around £4,000?
@ElectricVehicleMan9 ай бұрын
Bank transfer is always the safest for me. Or cash if they put it into your bank account there and then.

@@ElectricVehicleMan How would they pay cash into your bank account there and then?

Both go physically to a branch. The bank will check the notes when depositing.

How would I price my car. I saw one exact same as mine, Audi A3 8P automatic 2.0tfsi Quattro s line but the options in his car was crap it has the same miles as mine 92k plus his was a car N he wanted £4950. My options has the Bose system, sat nav. Cruise control. Alcantara seats with adjustability for the back and it’s not categorised. Where would I price mine above his?

Any insurance write off can be ignored for comparison. Find some others that are as close as possible and go from there that.

Private sale has no come back when they've got rid of a problem car and you can't trust anyone these days. Why anyone would buy a £15k - £20k car with zero protection is beyond me. Dealer everytime I'm afraid unless it's a sub £5k car just because you have some form of warranty or complaints process if it turns out to not be what was sold.
@ElectricVehicleMan9 ай бұрын
Or you just check the car. It's not hard. Or even buy a third party warranty. Hell, even BMW sell a full comprehensive warranty direct with their dealers for any BMW up to 10 years old.
@UKDagnar9 ай бұрын
@@ElectricVehicleMan Too often they're selling for a reason. And too often they've hidden it as best they can. By the time you find out you're stuck with a problem car and big bills to put it right. No trust, no protection with private sales, just not worth it unless it's at least £1k less than dealer prices.
@ElectricVehicleMan9 ай бұрын
@@UKDagnar that’s why you check the car! Or get it checked properly. I’ve not had the issues you mention. Just be sensible.
