Been in a rut for 15 years. At 31 i decided to address the chimp brain and im making some progress, mostly physical. Been on semen retention for 100 days, quit weed a month ago. Meditating and working out every day. Im still very lonely and broken mentally but hopefully when i limit social media and start reading books every day ill start to feel better. Things that work for me: - Waking up early and being productive (cleaning, going to the gym, food shop, etc) rather than lazing in bed. Feels good to achieve things! - Watching inspirational content / content of someone doing something that I need to do (cleaning, working out, making healthy food, etc) if I'm really struggling for motivation. - Having a to do list that I cross off. I try to do at least some of these things before I can use KZbin/Netflix etc. - Exercise. Just started couch to 5K and I have noticed I get more endorphins than weightlifting. - Have a plan for days off. Make sure to include time for socialisation. This will also cut down on social media time. - Transendental meditation. - Identifying what I do differently on good days vs bad days and then acting accordingly.

@@NewelOfKnowledge Step one, the biggest one: admitt that there is a problem. All too often we keep trying to do what we do, not "impose" our problems onto others or marginalizing our troubles, because others have it way way worse. If you translated that mindset to phyiscal illness and injury, you wouldn´t ever go to a doctor, because that guy´s leg is broken SO much more complicated, or sombody is dying of Ebola, what´s a fever and a runny nose? That was one of the first things my guy told me, maybe it fits. Because staying in the methaphor, he said, he would get patients who are bleeding to death (depression kills...), apologizing for being there, because he might be doing surgery on an open heart right now.

@@MisterJingo93 There will always be someone who has it worse and also someone who has it better. We have to deal with our own situation first. The saying is that you have to put your own oxygen mask on first. You can't pour from an empty cup. Self care is essential, it isn't selfish. Like the video said, acceptance is the first step, followed by action. It sounds like you've accepted where you're at and acted to seek help. That is an immense step, well done! Celebrate yourself. Wishing you all the best to managing depression and with all your future dreams
@MisterJingo93

@@butterfliesrainbows2568 It makes sense in hindsight. But as I said, first you need to accept there is a problem. It´s the difference between knowning there is a problem, and just dealing with it, (increasingly badly) and getting to the root. You didn´t know you needed an oxygen mask.

I was in a rut for more than three weeks just a week ago. After working hard for months on my business and creating content as a side project, I felt terrible and all the self-doubt and anxiety kicked in. The only thing that helped me was finally understanding that I had to take action. When it gets to a point where you feel much worse than at the beginning, it becomes harder to escape the rut. Action is the answer, no matter what it is-just act. Your advice is priceless mate. I wish you'd made this video two weeks ago lol. I'm in that exact place right now, was working hard on my business and creating content as well, somehow fell off due to something going very wrong needing me to re-do a huge process and stuff on top of that. Went from believing i could do anything to me sitting here right now kinda panicked that i'm not able to do anything, paralyzed and self soothing with constant youtube consumption. It's been 2 weeks since i last worked on the business and the self doubt is so real, making me more and more anxious about it that it was just a temporary thing to believe in myself.

My inner toddler! I used to have to tame her with lollies and dancing so i could study. No longer studying, and currently stuck in a being sick rut I've started journalling with myself in a new way, my stuck internal voice uses 'I' and my internal bigger me self uses 'you'… so my parts are talking with each other. It was really satisfying to do. Someone was actually listening to what my tantrumming toddler had to say!

Man I needed this video today. I work overnight and went into last night with that ambitious first of the month energy, only to crash and burn this morning, and subsequently fall right back into the very rut you’ve described here. And just as I’ve been doing lately, I volunteered to leave work early, head home, grab a coffee, rub one out and doom scroll for a bit before nodding off to la la land. I almost didn’t watch the video and opted to watch a YT short instead, but damn am I glad I didn’t do that now. Thank you my good man. I might just do right to watch it again. I’m going to do better than I am. I can. I will. I must.

I've started getting out of a rut. And pushing myself is actually helping. The most important takeaway I have from this video is about, addressing the presence of the chimp brain & it's impulsive thoughts...literally just addressing it has made me get things done 10x faster and feel like I'm atleast 70% out of the rut, and action/behaviour is the number one thing to do, whether that be big or small, I am celebrating the small wins and that is making me feel much better - mentally. I have been in a rut for exactly 3 weeks now, and I am finally getting out of it & building momentum. I am glad I got to go through this, because it taught me 2 things 1. Set your priorities straight (don't try to hustle between too many things) 2. Take care of your health (especially physical health - basic workout, drinking tons of water- atleast 2 liters a day, exposing yourself to sunlight everyday (if you can't everyday atleast every other day), also taking care of what your putting into your body, not treating it like a dustbin- but rather a scared & safe place, & other huge thing, if you are just mindlessly doing things, best way to bring back your consciousness is to self-reflect, and leave yourself alone with your thoughts, I tried detoxing myself from social media & content that I am addicted to and it worked in de-stimulating my brain.)

Hi Newel! I've struggled with all different types of ruts throughout my life. For me, my ADHD symptoms were brought about sort of as a way to avoid the things I didn't want to do. The experience isn't just procrastination and anxiety but multiple other seemingly uncorrelated (but strongly causative) symptoms. The only way I've managed to cope with the tricks my mind plays on me is by forcing this very simple rule: When you're confused on the next step, always do the next hardest thing. So even when my brain was de-valuing things I needed to but didn't want to do, or was trying to place sudden energy elsewhere (like excessive self care), the hardest things would consistently be the things I needed to do. This bypassed my brains value system and instead gave an added complication that my brain has since, not been able to make a workaround for. I believe many people might unconsciously suffer from the same issue, and it's a very tough one to crack; but I hope you or anyone else reading this might find it useful!

Too late. I just finally burned every bridge and I’ve never felt better. Now I can finally be authentic and not using all of my energy to pretend to be happy all so my friends and family can have the happy version of me around. It’s other people and their expectations that make the doom and gloom a problem. I’m fine with it personally. I SHOULD feel doom and gloom. I mean look around man! What’s wrong w the people who don’t know, notice, or care? What makes me feel bad is when people have expectations of me that I can’t meet. But now that I’ve just blown up all those relationships I’m FREE from that pressure and I didn’t have to lie and pretend I’m fine and happy just so those people can stand to be around me. That’s where I am. Now I can feel whatever I want to without feeling like I should feel differently bc of what other people might think or say or feel about me. Just get rid of all the other people in your life, and voila! Problem solved!

Negotiate with the Chimp. I like that. Reminds me of the Dylan Moran line about drugs. Instead of just saying “No!”, say “No, thank you”. Rational Recovery with calm politeness and understanding.

This is really helpful as I approach winter in a very northern climate. Winters are really hard when it is dark and cold all day. I know I am happy when I go for a run, ski, and meet up with friends but I end up watching movies with just the hubs and eating late night snacks. I don't even like movies. I am getting in a good rut so I can weather the winter!

I’ve been in a rut for a month now after a breakup. Drinking, rotting in bed, doom scrolling. I found your channel a couple of days back and I’m starting to learn to negotiate with my chimp brain. Been sleeping more, less scrolling and recently got a well-paid job offer which I’m so stoked about! It’s going to take a lot of time to be where I want to be, but I’m getting there😄. Do you have any more book reccomendations?

Honestly, in the past, I just got bored of being in a rut. And I kinda “faked it” until I felt like things changed. So even tho I wouldn’t want to go outside or talk to anyone or create art, I’d just throw myself into doing it again.

I was sleep deprived by one day took a full mushroom chocolate bar took my scooter and went to park with a lake and river sat down got high, looked at a tree named it Geoff. In my sleep, deprived druged state. I had to focus on my breathing. Almost like meditating I figured out that that’s what I was doing essentially. My brain wasn’t thinking at its best, this helped. I think that a lot of my sorrows can be traced to a high functioning brain that has time to think about negatives. One negative thought popped up one stemming from romantic depression. The was thought about me but I was like no you’re high and I started laughing continued staring at the lake breathing, meditating. It was the phones. They’re useful, but they steal our attention from our passions and the interest.

Hello Lewis! I feel so happy and hopeful watching your videos, watching you! I feel so inspired, Mindset is everything. And Mindsight I appreciate your honesty here and truly I don’t feel so alone in the world when I see your teachings. I actually understand and follow along very well with how you do this! Great job! You make learning for me, fun! I am on the same journey, I’m 22, and learning so much about myself and the world. These videos help me look within myself, and see a whole garden of beauties and growth. A whole landscape of possibilities. And it’s so beautiful to feel and see. To experience I would love to know how your journey started! Where did you learn all of this? Who inspired you to launch on this journey? Or was it yourself? I feel so curious! Thank you for being you! And gifting your time and energy to these videos! 🌿🩵

Getting out of a Rut is so difficult as it's friction and going against everything you are feeling, and you feel like it's going against you happiness. Speaking from experience, the best thing to do is just do it, all or nothing is not good for you, 10% is better than no %. Stay Uncommon!

I think I'm coming out of a rut right now, at least I'm going to act as though I am. I've got this idea bouncing about in my little head for months and months now and it torments me that I haven't yet made it. However, I've realised that I'm being very hard on myself and actually the things I'd need to learn to make it would put me far ahead of my peers, and I'm already doing well for even recognising this as my goal.
