A simple trick to dry your filter is to put it on the back side of a boxfan and the air being drawn in will hold the filter in place and dry while you are doing something else

Hey Dino. You can speed up the air filter drying time by spinning it in a cheap lettuce leaf spinner. Its also a good tip you mentioned not to let your nuts fall out. . . 😉

You didn't clean the secondary air filter.... Check the clutch cable sag Check throttle play Check spark plugs It is vibrating, so do a quick check for loose nuts and bolts.

Sharon Sharon, thank you for taking the time to comment, it is really appreciated and helps me improve. You are correct, there are a few other items that could have been in the video. It is challenging to get all the information into one video and not have the video be too long. Because of this, I moved the topics you mentioned into other future videos, clutch free play for example is covered in a clutch replacement video I have ready for release later in the season. and the others seemed to fit better for me in both the carb cleaning (throttle free play and vent hose filter) and valve adjustment( spark plug inspection and gapping) videos that are planned in the fall. Again it is hard to cover all items recommended to check every two months in one video (the manual list 14 things even including head bearing adjustment) but I will do my best to look at these in the future. Keith mullens, thanks for the comment, I think regular oil is most likely fine and as I mentioned I used to use it as well. I do feel that oils have changed over time and modern motorcycle oils are more compatible with the newer bikes on the market. In the end it is really up to what the user feels comfortable using and that's ok. Thank you for the feedback. Dino

‘Phillips Head Screw’ I don’t think so… all Japanese vehicles use JIS screws/bolts. Not Phillips, PosiDrive or anything else you wanna call it, if you ever wondered why your Phillips screw driver would not remove the magneto screws and chewed up the heads then that’s because they are JIS (look it up ! )

Hi Paul Marshall, thank you for the comment. you are not the first to mention this and in later videos I address the JIS screwdriver. I personally have never had an issue myself with using good quality Philips screwdrivers on any of my Japanese power sports but I have always been very cautious when removing any fasteners and stop what I am doing prior to damage. The JIS drivers do fit better than most lower cost traditional Philips drivers I own and I would agree with your observations on using them. Either way if you are to aggressive even JIS will cam out and destroy a fastener, its not a magic bullet, just more insurance for you. Thank you again for the comment. Dino

I expected everything up until the chain. I never did anything other than cleaning, greasing and checking tension. That thing about distance between a number of links is news to me, I just change the kit when the tooth are sharp. I'm not as thorough as I thought !

I knew most of what you did, I don't have a battery tester like yours, On the way (thanks Amazon). Your video ties everything together very well. I have a habit of doing one of these tasks at a time; takes forever. Also tells me how to maintain the DR when I comes time; BTW, how often for this routine? Thank you for all the tips. Would your hypersonic cleaner be too harsh to clean the chain with? Also, thanks to Karl, I wondered how toothpicks were made. Funny!!

Thank you for the comments and questions and I am sorry for the late response. I would not wait longer than 5000km or about 3000 miles or once a year for the service, however if you ride hard or ride in very dusty areas you may want to service more often. I am not sure about using the ultra sonic for the chain, I am sure it would work I just would not use anything to caustic in the tank. I really don't know if I would try it or not. Lately I just have an old pie pan that I fit the chain into and soak it in kerosine, then use a stiff nylon brush, works great. Dino

If your captive nuts are a little loose, simply pit a small dab of silicone sealer on it to keep it sitting fast

Is the airbox abs? Use some abs cement to tighten up on those nuts that like to get loose (doesn't solve the person overtightened them, but it can undo the damage)

Great video. When I clean my air filter, there was a tiny bit of gas in the air filter. Do you think that’s a big deal if it was a little damp but mostly I could smell the gas.

Thank you for the question. I always point out that I am not a mechanic, just a guy who likes to tinker, but I will give you my opinion. I always find my filter will smell a bit of gas when I pull it out but there is not pooling of fuel in the airbox itself. I think fuel does make its way back to the filter during normal riding as the throttle opens and closes (again, I am not an expert) however if you have pooling in the airbox I would think this could mean you have issues with float height, a faulty petcock or running way to rich. If the bike is running well for you and it is just a smell of gas I would not be to concerned, however perhaps others may chime in here with there experiences as well. Brake cleaner is a grease and oil remover, I use it on a rag to clean the matting surfaces of the oil cover and the cover itself as well as I clean out the air box with it. Mechanics use this for cleaning new brake rotors before they install the pads and calipers to make sure that no grease contaminates the pads. I used WD 40s bike chain degreaser on the chain but any gentle degreaser would work especially if the chain is not too dirty. I'm glad you like the videos, I'm new to this stuff, this was my 4th video so it's nice to know they are being well received. Hmmm Hard to explain. It is 19 foot pounds so that would be like a little more than 3, 5 pound bags of sugar on the end of a one foot bar pushing down. It does not need to be super tight so I would say snug it down and fill the bike. If it does not leak it's good. If it leaks snug it a bit more. Hope this helps Dino

It has only got to hold Itself in place! It’s not like it’s holding the wheels on! Finger tight then 1/8-1/4 of a turn, in this case it’s best to be slightly under ( if you have used a new crush washer that is) if you use old washer and it has been crushed already then don’t expect any ‘give’ just before it strips the thread out!!!

I have another question for you- I have KandN steel mesh air filter in my dr650 instead of a foam one. I imagine it's geared more towards street riding and less dirt even though I do both. Is there a way to service those? Should I put a foam filter over it?

Thank you for the question, I am not an expert on K&N filters however If it is the filter designed for the DR650 it is designed for off road use without a pre filter according to their website. The most important thing to remember with the K&N is that, although it comes pre oiled and ready to use right out of the box, when you do clean it it must be re-oiled in order to function properly. K&N sells a service kit for their air filters that runs about $20 USD and I would recommend using their product to ensure the best performance from their filters. If you ride in dusty conditions you may want to clean it more frequently. I hoe this helps and thank you for the question. Dino

Hey thank you for the comment, I do use disposable gloves if I am going to be working with a product that is extremely caustic or if I am exposed to a chemical like brake clean for a long period of time during a prolonged cleaning session. I do not use them for small tasks like this where I feel the risk to myself is less than the risk to the environment by generating unrequired disposable products. For me, I find washing my hands and using a moisturizing agent afterwards works fine for most products I use. However if you find the products I am using are a bit to harsh for you, than gloves are a good idea. Again thank you for the comment, I appreciate the feedback. Dino

LOL I am sure that I am much more annoying than his wife is, Karl and I met about 30 years ago, I was apprenticing as a horticulturalist and he was taking his apprentice for auto mechanics.
