You can use the time code chapters bellow to skip to the sections that you are interested in if you do not want to watch the entire video.
In this episode I will flush and change the DR650’s brake fluid using both a manual bleeding and vacuum bleed methods. I will show you the tools required, and the steps involved to get all the air out of the systems and get a firm feel at the lever.
I will also explain the four main components of a motorcycle brake system and talk a bit about the types of brake fluids on the market and why you must pay attention to what you use, don’t worry, Ill also let you know how to determine what type of fluid your ride uses as well.
Once the fluid is changed out, I will show you how to remove and reinstall new brake pads on the DR650 and we will look at these components in a bit more detail on the bench. I will also talk a bit about braking in your new brake pads once you’re ready to ride.

Love ya Dino! Did a Brake & Bleed service on my 2018 and it was easy after watching this video. The reminder to head out and break in the pads is a good one. They are slick until you seat them real good with a dozen fast controlled stops. And what a difference the fluid makes!! That’s going to be yearly for me now because it’s so easy. The 6 year old stuff that came out looked like a dark ale, not clear brake fluid. I didn’t even use a full 16 OZ bottle for both front and back and I was generous on the reservoir refills.

Thanks for the comment. I agree, it is a simple inexpensive service that pays off in stopping performance and also longevity of your brake components. Dino

I'm gonna say it again. Best youtube for DR owners. Can't believe I was not using the pins to hold the brake pad while installing. Look so much easier. Let's go change my second set ever! Thank you!

Thanks Dino your video helped me a lot. I just got a DR a month ago, it’s my first motorcycle so I’ve never worked on them before. I successfully changed my pads and fluid with your help. If your looking for video ideas a valve check tutorial would be great.

Brilliant video! Learned a lot of new things watching it. I am intrigued by your windshield setup. That is a BMW F650GS Dakar windshield correct? I've had the same idea and have a black one in the shed ready to be installed, but I haven't figured out a good mounting solution yet. Please share how yours is mounted!

Thank you for the comment , you are correct in your guess. The windscreen came with the bike when I bought it and I have received a lot of interest in the comments so I will put together a video on how I mounted it. Dino

Maybe I missed this, but use a JIS screwdriver on those "Phillips" head screws, or you'll be screwed...

Sometimes I forget to mention the JIS especially in some of my earlier videos. Thank you for the catch, 😀 Dino

Hey Dino, do you need the vacuum for the rear break or can you do it in a similar manner to the front break? Thanks!
@DinosTinkerShed
@DinosTinkerShed Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question. You can manually bleed the rear if you want. The vacuum is a nice option only. Great question. Dino

It appears that you did not lubricate/grease the brake caliper slider pins before reassembly. Is this not standard practice?

Hi Charles C and thank you for the question. I did not read anything in the manual about lubricating the pad pins. You could certainly add some never cease to the thread areas to ensure they do not lock in place if you live in a high corrosion zone. I'm not sure if I would personally add grease to the pins as it could risk contaminating the friction material or attract debris to stick to the pins, however again I'm not a mechanic . I hope this helps. Thank you again for the comment. Dino

Sorry Charles C i just reread your comment and i think I miss interpreted your questions. You are asking about the caliper sliding pins that allow the caliper to slide in and out not the pins pads. Yes you are correct I did not grease my slider pins. It is absolutely a good practice to clean and decrease these to ensure the caliper does not freeze up on the sliders. I had already done this when I bought the bike last Fall and I guess it slipped my mind when I produced the video. Perhaps I can produce a followup video this winter and brake down the entire caliper. Thanks for the comment. Dino

Thanks for confirming the recommendation of re-greasing the slider pins. BTW, great videos! I, too, have a DR650, and your how-to vids are most helpful.
