Getting set up to do fork service on my Ducati Paul Smart. This is by far the best and cleverest (with the entertainingly tongue-in-cheek off-color puns) video on Ohlins fork service I have found. Especially appreciate the plastic bag trick. One video suggested going over the inner tube with 800 grit sandpaper, made my skin crawl. I could see 1200 grit but not as a matter of course; only if needed.

Glad you corrected yourself re ruler and rule...my late father was an engineer and always reminded me of that when I was using my rule for homework. I've never forgotten and I'm now 66!!
@markchisholm26572 ай бұрын
I'm an engineer and use a 'rule' not a ruler. Or so I thought. I had the discussion a while back saying a rule is used by engineers while a ruler is a school child's device or someone who runs a kingdom. Turns out I was wrong. Ruler is in fact the correct term although rule is often used by engineers as well.

Interesting to see the thought Ohlins have put into the design to make the forks straightforward to work on.

I have a new appreciation for your Blue Peter inspired presenting style now Rob pointed that out. It really works for me. And the use of Rob on camera holding duties during the action shots really helped too. Rob has many talents it would seem.

Much difference between 5W fork oils? K Tech is 17.5 cst at 40 degrees and Ohlins is 20 cst I believe. So around 10% change. Will be interesting to see if the forks feel any softer as a result, bearing in mind that he maintained the same number of clicks...

Did the job today and you were so right it’s quite easy and just did it with 1 litre of oil but bought two in case but will do if I ever do them or another set again 👍 longest part is awaiting oil to drain and taking forks and putting back in again don’t have a lift so up and down off the floor and don’t have s front stand so jack under sump and I have a Ilmberger belly pan so remove that is quick but again thanks so much for the detailed video it’s so helpful thanks again

I thought for a moment at the start of the video that you'd become crew chief in your own workshop and was having Rob do all the work. 😂 Now there's an idea... I think I won Dave Innuendo Bingo after about 11 minutes.🤣

Great video Dave, though you spoke so quickly it sounded like you were massively over caffeinated! Also - you’re a naughty boy for dumping oil down the sink-Ha! Motivated me to get the forks sorted on my M900… Cheers from Florida!

The sink isn't connected to the drain

Thanks again Dave for a spot on video 👍 just a question Would a litre of oil do for both forks and do u need to wind all the preload rebound and compression off before you start after taking settings that were already in the bike ?
@obsession_engineering2 ай бұрын
Dampers can stay where they are, I'd always remove the preload as it'll make disassembly easier.
@obsession_engineering2 ай бұрын
And a litre will just do the job, but only just!

When reinstalling the spring cap locknut how far down do you wind it i.e is there a specific amount of threads that need to be visible before the top cap is screwed on?
@obsession_engineering26 күн бұрын
There's no measurement on the Ohlins, just screw it until it stops

Will the new oil mean you have to do the setup again as the old settings were when that manky yuk was in the fork and I imagine less viscous than the new clean oil ?
@obsession_engineering2 ай бұрын
The base setting from aprilia was for when the forks were new, so I'll stick to them as a start point. And it's an interesting test to see if the difference is noticeable

Not a semi-active service technician about if its not ohlins. The calamity when other manufacturers semi-active suspension is woefully under damped because no one will service them and if they do its guess work🤣.
