If I have a stone with no edge (example sea glass) would the Readyset mount still work?

ReadySet mountings are typically used for faceted gemstones, some also work for flat-backed cabochons, so they won't easily set sea glass. With the right bur you might be able to reshape the prong enough to fit the sea glass but this is also dependent on the thickness of the glass and the height of the prongs. Best of luck!

Question. I have a pair of 6mm gemstones, that are about 4.1mm-4.4mm in depth. I have purchased many pre-notched gemsettings, but the prongs are always to short. I am told to go up a size setting (7mm) but then the prongs would be to long so I would have to cut the prongs. I am way to nervous to do that, so I was wondering what else can I do? I cant afford to pay a jewelry to make settings and set them.

Hi Jared, Thanks for your question. Can you tell us a bit more about the stones you are setting and what kind of mounting you are looking for on this piece? We may be able to special order the mountings in either a 6mm or 6.5mm size.

My stones are 6mm rounds with a 4mm depth. I am looking for basket settings but can only seem to find them in a 6mm, will a 6.5mm work, if so will the stones fall through the mounts? The stones are .99 carat portuguese cut with about a 1mm possibly a 1.5mm girdle. I tried the pre notched that are not basket settings, but the prongs don't seem to go high enough to wrap over the stones, and I don't like snaptite as they bend easily.

Portuguese cuts can be very difficult because of the deep belly on the stones. Our Jewelry Tech Team advises a 6.5mm setting to give more depth in the inside of the mounting. Usually, basket settings have a top rail that you can cut into a little if needed, but it also takes up some of the room where the stones sit. This allows for smaller stones to fit into a larger setting. (Usually they sit lower.) In this case, it may give you the room needed to be able to set your stones. The other issue here is an extremely thick girdle on the stones. This will require more prong length just to be able to cut a seat large enough to hold the stone. You may want to try both a 6.5mm and a 7mm setting and see which will accommodate the stone better. If it fits in the 7mm setting without dropping through, use it. If the 7mm is too large and the stone drops through, then you will have to go down to the 6.5mm setting. You are also very welcome to consult our Jewelry Tech Team wtih a call! Can you send me a link to a pair of settings that will work? I am not experienced enough to cut into a setting however. Any type of setting that you think will work can you send me a link so I can purchase them? As long as they are studs however, nothing that dangles.
