I have one objection: when angle-tightening bolts you should apply the same principle as with torque-tightening which is - it needs to be done in a single uninterrupted motion. Static friction is not the same as sliding friction. This is especially important for head bolts and rod bolts, but by the same measure it's almost as important for any bolt where angle tightening measurement is given.
@dnl35projects4 ай бұрын
You are absolutely right however I found a bit hard to tight and torque while recording, siting on a small stool 🤣 thanks for the feedback
@KurtV82 ай бұрын
Great video as usual. The workshop manual describes a step which you didn't do in the video. Prior to tightening the final tightening of the new vanos bolts, it tells you to: "loosen the central vanos bolts by maximum 40°, crank engine back at central bolt through 8°, insert central bolt of intake camshaft (jointing torque 5 Nm) and repeat for exhaust, then move crank back to 150 degrees". It describes these steps as 'important'. Can I ask your views on this process?
@dnl35projects2 ай бұрын
Hi, I believe that step is basically to ensure the vanos gears are in the most retarded position and those were checked prior to assembling the engine

Great work! If you are taking the engine apart that already has no timing issues, Would the first steps be to lock the crank, then lock the camshafts, then remove the tensioner? Can the passenger side be done first, then assembled and then driver side done?
@dnl35projects4 ай бұрын
Yes you can do each side individually and it doesn't matter which side you do first. In order to remove the tensioner you should lock it first (slide a pin into the whole) and in order to do that you could pry the chain guide with a lever (to compress the tensioner) or rotate the engine anti-clockwise a bit (PS: thats the only scenario you should ever crank the engine anti-clockwise, when you are dismantling it. doing so could cause the chain to skip a teeth)

@@dnl35projects I can’t seem to find the size of the pin for that tensioner hole, is it 3mm or 3.5mm?

Alignment kit I purchased has only one set of cam lock tools, can time still be set. Also you didn't really show getting the cams in the correct position, how do you make sure they are correct angular position when installing cam lock tool?
@dnl35projects4 ай бұрын
Hi Robert, the timing kits for Non-TU engines usually have locks for only two cams (intake and exhaust) - that’s completely fine because timing one bank does not affect the other so you do one at the time. As for the camshaft, pause the video where I show the slots for the cam tools to slide - there is a shaved/grinded surface on the cams which should point up when you installing the tools - yes you can potentially install them upside down (180 degrees off) and that will need the timing however if ensure the shaved are up, both locking tools will sit on the cams perfectly fine and flush to the head.

Thank you for replying to my question, at this stage I am not sure the block can be used. I did get piston and a view of the crankshaft, even though the car was running there were connector rod bear welded to the crankshaft and some were so worn they were paper thin. I only saw one undamaged crank journal out of the four. I think I am going purchase a reman engine form BMW. I still will like to rebuild an engine and will try to collect all needed parts. So thank you for all your informative videos.

@dnl35projects4 ай бұрын
The engine configuration is basically the same however many improvement have been made on the TU - The VALVETRONIC on intake has been completely changed, oil pump is different, PCV and emissions are much different, fuel injectors, HPFP, the ECUs are water cooled and most importantly the wiring Barnes on the TU is waaay easier to work with (from mechanics point of view) than the non TU engines

I looked back at the videos and you are absolutely right, my apologies as I've been doing this for a while and didn't actually realise I could explain the crank tool a bit further, also the cam positioning. Basically the lock tool I bolt onto the crank (harmonic balancer) has to align with the marks on it, we then insert the locking pin until it reaches the timing cover on the correct spot. Send me an email and I can provide some photos of what I mean.

You fit the manual tensioner the same way as the normal one, but tight the adjuster bolt with your hands until is tight (manual says 0.5Nm) - As long as there’s no slack in the chain you’re good
