Oxford United and we are in the Championship with a 4-4-2. Up front a complete or advanced forward with a tall target forward on support. Our third striker is typically either a poacher or an AF depending who he replaces. Flanks are two wingers, one on attack that cuts inside where as the other is on support or attack that runs wide. In CM there is a BWM on either suppport or defend coupled with a CM or BBM on support that runs forward and roams from position. Two CD covering our GK. The fullbacks are actually two CWB on support or one of them inverts on support. Fairly wide, positive with high lines. No counter pressing and looking for overlaps with attacks on left and right side. Varies this with a more defensive tactic as well as a very attacking tactic, the latter with more direct passing and two TF up front. Sometimes take out a defender and add an AM in the no 10 position.

That is interesting. So you sometimes switch to one CB to add in the AM, or do you bring the full backs inside to create a back 3?

One of my fullbacks best position is inverted so if he plays and I need to be a bit defensive and/or strengthen the midfield because of the opposition I let him play inverted. But standard set up are two full backs in roles as wb or fb rushing forward. The inverted bit is something that depends on the specific player an I am not quite sure how that role adds so it is an experiment.

My 4-4-2 at a 2nd tier Wales club: AF(A) DLF(S) WM(S) AP(S) CM(D) W(A) FB(A) CB(D) CB(D) FB(S) We use the WM on the left because he’s slow. We use controlled possession tactics with this formation, which is odd I guess. But it works well.

In my own save, the majority of AI managers use a 4-4-2. About 2030 it just seemed to take over my save.

That's interesting, because at the start of saves, a back 3/back 5 seems very popular

I used 4-4-2 so much with Guiseley even in PL. change tho to 3-3-3-1 (3 at backs, wingback+ dm and offensive mid, 2 wings. I got more solid defensively with 3-3-3-1. tho I have so few central defenders so I might go back to 4-4-2 maybe diamond since I have a really talent offensive mittfielder I will try a flat 4-4-2 with inwerted winger and wide playmaker. A Small problem tho is alllmost my left winger can play that deep right now

my 4-4-2 is quite similar to yours ! I use the DLP on defend and ask him to press less for the reasons you said and near him i have CM on defend at the right i use a wide mid on support and ask him to deliver the crosses because i was thinking it more like the hargraves/beckham/ji sung park role but i also ask him to sit narrow on the other side i have an inverted winger on support beause both my full backs ar on attack those provide my width and finally my two strikers are a target man on support and a pressing forward on attack just because i couldnt sign any target man with enough pace to hit the counter , CB's on defend and sweeper keeper on defend

Both are great. The WM is nice because it is a blank canvas for you to add PI's to

@TheManagersSeat true, but the WP can give you the inside presence up top to link the midfield and attack, allowing your CMs to focus on two roles, attack and defend

How do you think the defence would hold if instead of it being two centre backs, you end up using one as a no nonsense centre back on defence instead?
