I love watching people show a set up the way a manufacturer wants something set up. Trying to learn carbs. I went backward and started more on efi. Everything past the intake boot works the same, but trying to learn how to make a carb do what I want is a process.

Shane you are priceless. I am a 48 years experience at age 64 machinist and mechanic. Like previous videos I watched of your putting together a twin cam counter balancer engine which helped me to learn how the missing teeth on one flywheel is how my crank position sensor worked. Now tonight with this carburetor video I found an answer to something I was unsure about, as for the small brass tibe in my throttle in where it wiggled a little bit and how I had to turn it to get my fuel to spray into the inside area. Its the brass nozzle that sticks up just before your throttle plates and sprays the fuel. Now I know I have it right on this evo 97 fatboy . It doesnt ove in where its metal to metal but in the exact way it would be with a o ring holding it in .

Awesome! No one has a good video on these carbs .. you gotta do a tuning video for it ...I've always used s&s but I finally got sick of that exceliration and got the 42 and Its so much better I'm still a bit rich ..I'm not used to having all these adjustments and being able to tweak it just so. A video about tuning it would be super helpful ..all of your videos are super helpful thanks for everything you do.

I did an HSR 42 on my 99 evo night train. It was a little rich so I followed it up with I higher flow K&N air cleaner instead of a higher flow OE style air cleaner with a modified air box. I then pulled my baffles and ordered 4 inch instead of 10inch baffles. Then installed an ultima single fire ignition system. Finally I put and Ev27 cam with S&S adjustable push tubes and breather gear. Every part I added woke the bike up a bit more and complimented the HSR 42 carb but I'm still a tiny bit rich. I followed all the steps in the guid before I installed it. Reset it with every component and it runs great. I'm sure that tiny bit rich isn't killing anything but I am a 29 year mechanic and in my mind I can see carbon building in the combustion chamber and its driving me nuts. I agree you guys should make and on bike tuning video. I don't care if its on an 883 1200 80" or 88" most 96" and better were fuel injected. Just stay harley as that's who's buying 90% of the hsr42s

I have a 2010 FXDWG. I removed all the EFI components and added this carb and I have to say - it made a HUGE difference in the way the bike runs. Along with the V&H exhaust and JET air cleaner and intake, it's 25% more of everything. I just sent my heads up to Hammer Performance in Idaho for a CNC porting and valve job. Along with an Andrews 57H cam set, the bike will be just where I want it. . . . . for now!

You have to pull pretty much everything apart and check it for swarf and maybe file imperfections away these days sorry to say. Chinese stuff mainly, but I've even had USA and European made parts with swarf left inside. It's good engine building practice to check all parts before final assembly anyway

Great content Shane! I have a question about my accelerator pump adjuster #1 was turned by someone who thought they were adjusting the idle. Can you help me get dialed back in as to where #1 pump adjuster should be set?

Hi, wondering if you would comment. My HSR42 is on an Austin Mini 1275. Low end is great, main jet performance great. Mid range flat spot, and back firing out the exhaust. Get past that, great. It acts lean and according to my o2 sensored gauge it says that also. Messed with A/P, no change, have the richest needle on the richest position with two washers under the needle and better but not great. Still almost goes away with pulling enrichener out. This should not be this hard. I'm wondering how sensitive the float adjustment is and given the amount the carb is tipped on the car. Thoughts please?

thx for the helpful video. So if I want to set the float height on one of those slanted Mikuni carbs on an atv with no service manual or those measuring tools, would my best bet be to set the float tab 90 degrees to the float arms as you mentioned in the video or to adjust it as best as I can so the tab is parallel with the slant of the carb body? Thx!
@How2Wrench4 жыл бұрын
I posted the manual link in the video description. The manual is for the carb and I would follow it. I’m mechanically inclined as I fix cars. I’m just new to motorcycle pit bike engines. Even if you could get me a manual on the 190 maybe that would help me out.

I need help on a HSR42 carb. I followed this video, and the manual and adjusted the float bowl. Still got overflow. Then I replaced the valve and seat, and checked the float adjustment again. This time I went closer to 20mm....still have overflow. I have tried everything. Complete rebuild kit, all gasket, jets, etc. The only thing I havent replace is the float itself. Why do I still have overflow? By this, I mean when I turn on fuel, the carb bowl fills up, and then starts to drip out of the overflow tube. There is nothing else to replace but the carb itself. How do I fix this?

@@How2Wrench Thank you for the reply. My problem was not a normal one. I had replaced the needle and seat with new parts from Drag Specialties, and still had overflow. Upon very careful inspection, I found that the needle would bind if it was in the right position. Because at the bottom of the seat there are four perpendicular holes. There was a tiny ridge on the circumference of the holes that the splines of the needle would catch on. This would cause overflow. I replaced those parts with Genuine Mikuni seat and needle and the problem was solved. Tricky problem, but it is solved, thank you.

Is there a shorter choke cable available that would allow you to simply flip it and run it out on the filter side? The cable wouldn't be in any kind of bend or kinked. I'm going to check mine to see if the cable connections might interfere. I have a straight pull without the cable but it won't work on my Sportster. You even had it in the position I'm speaking about at one time.

I enjoyed the video very much however I'm just an ordinary ol'man with a sportster that does my own work for my own bike. I don't run a shop and I'm not officially a mechanic. Not saying joining isn't worth it but just not seeing me needing to know much of what he covers in his video. I just found the video to be interesting and had that one question about the choke. I will find out the answer to my question over the next few months anyway when I rebuild my engine and install a new her carb that I've modified to run I my bike with a blow through turbo set up. I'm kind of curious if he knows the modifications needed to make the hsr work with a blow through turbo not that I need to know because I've did mine already. Thank you

I installed an HSR42 on my 1200 sporty and i LOVE it, but the dang thing is pissing fuel. When I get back from a ride, I shutoff the bike and shutoff my Pingle petcock and fuel sprays out of the carb, soaking the exhaust and side of engine. It seems to be spraying out of the fuel inlet fitting, like it's built up pressure or something. Bike runs great and I love this carb, but I'm scratching my head on this one.
