I always pick up some useful tips from your videos and folding your mat inside out was one of them, however how did you decide which side is which?

The top usually has the name on it or different shade of colour on some. This one has name on top. It really helped here, as I'd not taken a towel, although hat worked fine to dry bits off, but not having the bit I was about to lie on dry or dry enough helped a lot.

The problem you now have is getting your clothes dry, I solve this by wearing paramo under a lightweight sil nylon poncho in heavy rain. Any dampness under the poncho will dry quickly and naturally as that is how paramo is designed to work, and it does. The poncho covers down to my gaitors so wet kit the next day is not an issue. I also feel that your shelter is just unsuitable for the conditions, everything has been sacrificed for weight, and you pay a price for that in the wet. It's interesting to see what you're doing but IMHO it's how not to do it, I say that as someone who's just come off a week long through hike in those exact conditions for most of it. Please take this as constructive criticism, which is how it's meant.

Hello, interesting thoughts and absolutely taken in kind way. What shelter would you recommend and why? How would that be superior to this? How do you think this lacks? What temps do you wear Paramo in? I have Paramo but it's far too warm in anything above 5c for me. What for you? I was out for three nights and was dry the next day, if it had been essential to dry out and the forecast wet in morning I'd have strung up one of my spare lines inside the tent to hang stuff to drip a bit, but as I spotted better weather in morning and I was in no rush I just left it and hung it out in morning as you see in the video if you got to the end I was nice and dry. It's September in the south of the UK so the weather wasn't that cold although my hands did get cold due to wet breezy weather and temps at about 12c. Maybe my fingers are more susceptible than most? I was very happy with how everything worked. Once it is colder, ie from now on till spring I'd not rely on a kilt but waterproof trousers. Where were you walking? A poncho is good but in UK conditions it's just too susceptible to wind blowing it everywhere. They popular in USA forests etc. I have two and use as tarps more. I'll be interested in your reply. Great to compare ideas and thoughts.

@@TonyHobbs Hi Tony, I'm glad you interpreted it in the way it was intended, and I'm also glad you got your kit dry. I was in the Lake district and Pennines doing the C2C (which I had to finish incomplete due to a shin splint). It was a good lesson in the conditions ( I will be doing it again ). I found my lightweight Paramo Velez jacket (lightweight for Paramo) to be excellent, yes it is warm, and when dry I took it off, unless there was windchill. It's also very easy to vent down the sides and front. When it rained hard and consistently I reverted to a cheap sleeved poncho over the top, which did work very well, I have now modified this to a Rab sil nylon poncho which I will wear over my Paramo and under my Durston backpack, so it won't flap about much at all, and the air gets underneath and works in favour of the paramo. Bear in mind I was often at altitude on this hike, so it was quite cool at times. I used the Durston X-mid solid as my tent, which is excellent, but with one big issue, when it is raining you can't open the vestibule without the rain pouring in (A common problem with most tents). However, I've now worked out I can use my Rab poncho, with my trekking poles and some builders line, and create a quick porch over the top of the tent and vestibule, for dry access. I should add I carried the Durston carbon poles (172g in total) so I could use my trekking poles for things such as this. I'm already carrying a ponchoso there's no real weight overhead for a quick/temp porch awning. I do think the Durston X-Mid 1P solid is well suited for UK conditions, with two very large vestibules and the ability to do a smaller 'skinny' pitch if you need to. I had to do an emergency quick pitch up on the mountains when it was getting dark, and this tent really proved it's worth in these conditions as it's very quick and easy to pitch. Your particular choice would be too small for me as I'm 6ft 2" and need some room, I also think it's too shallow bathtub wise for wet conditions. On the poncho, I live in Pembrokeshire on the coast in usually windy conditions and I don't find it an issue if you wear them in the right way, though I can see how if you don't they can be awkward at times. I've modified my set up on the back of my C2C and looking forward to testing some more things. I am very much looking forward to a tent I backed on kickstarter which could solve a lot of issues, check the wind anchor from thecatal, it looks made for uk weather.

@Lands_Solo great reply. The groundsheet is adequate and didn't let water in. I think MLD designed it for weight saving and it works if careful. I'm skeptical of that wind tent it's advertised all over and claims wind proof to 80mpg with two pegs highly unlikely. If they want to send me one to use and try out I'd do that and give open honest opinion. Durston uggg I've used that a few times ok one trip plus a night and really don't rate it for my use. I've various vids on it. I much prefer this. I can get under cover do door up and change out of rain. You can't do easily as porch design one edge behind pole on xmid. I really don't like it. This solomid imo is far superior. I can see xmid helpful if taller like you. I'd use paramo once cooler but in warmer weather I'd prefer wind shirt when not raining plus gore or similar when raining. I'll be in Scotland soon with similar kit a few changes but not much. Good luck with your trips and new tent.

@@TonyHobbs I don't expect to be out in any tent at 80mph to be honest, I'm interested in the portability, ease of pitching and incredibly versatile flysheet, which will make dealing with wet conditions much easier. The X-Mid is best pitched without the inner in situ when it's raining, then it's really easy to pitch and get in it and pitch the inner if you need to. I found it to be nearly perfect (except for the rain falling in issue), but each to their own when it comes to tents/tarps I guess. I'll review the wind anchor when it turns up, should be October apparently.
@TonyHobbs
@TonyHobbs 6 күн бұрын
@Lands_Solo yes definitely personal tastes. I expect the wind anchor will be the next in thing lol it'll be interesting what people say. Pitching xmid without inner then putting that up sounds a right faff. I do agree it's much better if used with just a groundsheet though. I did that once and turned a difficult shelter to live with to one that wasn't bad. I definitely prefer my MLD kit. The wind anchor looks quite small but definitely interesting to see what it's like not that I'll see one. Yeah absolutely just not sure why they'd advertise is as capable of those speeds. Level 8 is 80 on Beaufort scale.
