Hard to say what is causing it to shut off like that, but at least it starts right up again though, I had one 12 horse briggs that if you stalled it out in high grass it would vapor lock and you would have to let it cool down to start up again, really annoying haha Your welcome, glad to hear that, its a fun hobby to get into and there is money to be made doing it. However, if you could include the make and model of this one, and the ones you're demonstrating at the time, that would be a big help. My B&S 22hp started doing this the 3rd season. Had to have carburetor rebuilt after the 4th season because gas was leaking out carburetor while sitting in garage. They say ethanol ate the seals. My other 2 mowers mower a B&S 16hp and a B&S 24hp sat with ethanol gas in them year round no problem. After the $400 carburetor i job i drive 22 miles to get ethanol free gas for the 22hp but the others still running strong on ethanol after 15 years. I even told the guy who rebuilt the carburetor it had been hard to start for 2 years before carburetor started leaking and it was hard to start after he rebuilt carburetor. They said didn't know why it was hard to start. Well 2 years later and seeing the comments here I adjusted the choke, heck it was not even close to being in position. Everybody adjust the choke! All that cranking could not have been good on the coils, hoping that cures up. What pisses me off is that everybody else said start with the valve clearance. It was out very little and getting that permatex on the valve covers to seal without getting it on your internal components is hell.
@fnaguitarplayer98 жыл бұрын
I hear ya! Sometimes it is something simple like that. But ethanol does work on certain gaskets/diaphragms. I haven't much problems with my personal equipment, but its mainly when something sits a long time before it starts to work on them. Glad you got it going! Thanks for Watching!!!

Great video & helpful information. I just bought a throttle cable for a 2015 toro 60inch. Just like in your video there's a cable clamp on the engine right before the z-bend connects. .y question is how do you gauge where to tighten it down, there was a stop screw but it missing or broke off & I dont want to make it too tight, then the engine revs way too high.
@fnaguitarplayer96 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You have to keep playing with it some to get it adjusted right there is no preset way to set it up, but when you set the throttle to idle you do want it all the way so the switch kills the engine, so as long as it does that you should be good. Thanks for Watching!!!

I bought two different after markets carbs on a 19 hp Briggs & Stratton motor but can't get them running right . the air/mixer screw doesn't seem to do a thing I know I'm running lean, becauce the surging and popping/backfire stops when I slowly give it the choke manualy . from what I learn with all the video's I watch I need to drill the Idle jet larger because Its not getting enough gas. what your option? I did check the valve lash and its within spec.

My buddy and I just jerryriiged a "new" throttle cable on my very old B&S. We cut it off! Used about 8 inches of it and moved throttle left and front to 3000 - 3200rmps the fastened the cable to where it was supposed to be fastened/screwd on. No new cable necessary. Besides, the model and serial #s were worn off. My only other option was a small engine scrap yard.

Thanks for helping, though I think when throttle is wide open, wouldn't want the engine "choked". Choke valve adjusts the air inlet and when at full throttle with a lot of gas flowing, the carburetor needs maximum air, choke flap wide open, not choked. You'd choke at idle to match the leaner gas flow and fully choking it would kill the engine..from idle. Point being, a cold engine and/or at idle needs to run rich with closed or narrowly open choke valve, then open it progressively as engine warms and at higher throttle. I know you know this but just want folks coming for help to understand.

You may be right, but that's not the way Briggs do it. I have a 13HP with an "automatic" choke (it isn't really automatic, real automatic chokes have temperature controls in them). When you look at the operation of the linkages the only time the choke is activated is when the throttle lever is at at 'full throttle + choke' for starting, once you move the throttle down into the Slow - Fast operating band the choke does not function at all.

Hi player, these videos are so informative. I have a 12.5HP B&S (28t707) on a Viking MT433. I got in out of the shed for my wife and it was working as normal as now with throttle lever (ie put on choke to start). I had a call from wife to say mower just stopped working when using it. When I got home to inspect the throttle lever has changed. To start mower now you have to move it down to 'run' to get mower to start and to slow the speed instead of moving lever down to 'slow' you have to move up to choke. Any assistance would be appreciated?

Hi, I seem to have a problem with my set up. I have a 11.5 Briggs on a 33 inch cut Snapper rer. It has the automatic choke. I put a new carb on it and when I set to choke it seems like the choke lever is too short. It will not go all the way over to push the lever to choke on top of the carb. The thing that moves on the back side of the plate will only go to full throttle. It will start up on full throttle though but to choke it I have to push the little wire over by hand. Whats wrong? Converting Auto Choke to manual and installing throttle control cable on briggs 7.75 hp walk behind lawn mower...Need detailed instruction and diagram on where to hook cables on to carb...and where/how to secure cable to engine and zip tie to push handle. Thanks
@fnaguitarplayer96 жыл бұрын
You may not be able to add a throttle to it, as alot of these newer mowers have a preset governed throttle. The choke may be doable, but is usually located under the flywheel cover, alot of the newer ones are air vane operated chokes. Thanks for Watching!!!
@patrickpage84776 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your response. I located the Throttle and choke plastic tabs on top of the carb and drilled hole in each. I then attached a control cable to each hole and zip tied it back to the handle. A converted control box that was formerly used to engage the rear wheel drive and shift from forward to backward was then used to control the choke and throttle cable. I did not like the idea of auto choke causing engine to start at full throttle. I am a little concern that plastic tabs on top of carb may break off. Wish they were metal. Thinking of alternative ways to attach control cable if this happens?

I'm dealing with a TroyBilt push mower with the Honda GCV160 engine with auto-choke. Is the lever that pushes the carb choke control supposed to return to "open" position after the engine catches? Is this controlled by heat or spring? Mine works the 1st time but the next time it will not close the choke. Also, on a Kawasaki on John Deere rider, can the throttle plate go bad? I keep setting my throttle and choke orientation but they move after I tighten down my throttle clamp. Thanks.
@fnaguitarplayer97 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure on the Honda motors, but on the briggs that have the auto choke its a air vane that controls it, same way it works the governor, you could remove the flywheel shroud and see if thats what it is, its actually a decent setup when its working good. I have seen covers get bent and keep it from working. It can, but that wouldn't cause the cables to slip in the clamps, you might need new clamps, they could be bent and make sure there is no oil or grease on them that would make it easier for them to slip. Hope this helps, thanks for watching!!!
@ontariohvac7 жыл бұрын
About the Cherokee's problem, I had two of those Hondas through here before I had to take a year's medical leave, and I haven't seen one yet this season, so I'm talking from old memory here, but if we're talking about the same gee-whiz contraption, and I think we are, the Honda choke was closed manually by the operator, extending a spring which slowly retracted and opened the choke whether the engine started or not. The Cherokee says: "Mine works the 1st time but the next time it will not close the choke." I presume he means he tries to reset the choke manually again, but it fails to engage the arm controlling the choke plate position. I hesitate to go into further detail from memory. However, I suggest the carb has been removed and reinstalled incorrectly. This is jolly good fun, involving a stack of seven components if I recall correctly, including the carburetor and a great vast heat shield and the bloody air cleaner body, which together conspire to hide the choke mechanism from view during installation. The components are stacked onto two bolts that screw into the block and hold everything together in proper compression. The air cleaner body holds the slider which is manually positioned by the operator to close the choke and extend the spring mentioned above. The choke control mechanism does not use linkages but rather control arms interacting as wipers. These control arms must be in the correct position and engaged blindly when the carburetor is reinstalled.
@ontariohvac7 жыл бұрын
I was out of breath. To continue, proper engagement of the choke controls when installing the carburetor requires much thoughtful study by the rookie. Patience. Try, try again, until poof, the hex is dispelled, and everything slips together in perfect harmony. The dues must be paid; from then on, it's easy. So, Cherokee, unless something is broken, which is unlikely, the choke control mechanism is not properly engaged. If we're talking about the same carb, that is, but I'm confident we are. You can get a fairly good view behind the heat shield from the right. You might be able to see the control arm move when you actuate the slider, that will help you analyze the mechanism. If I'm right, the carb must come back off. That's when you earn your pay. Good luck.

hi tried adjusting mine but it doesnt spring back, can I buy a new spring for it?
@fnaguitarplayer97 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can, first make sure it hasn't come loose, i've had them do that. If you need the part number give the model type and code off the engine so i can look up the exact #. Thanks for Watching!!!

fnaguitarplayer9 I think it's more than spring, the governor has slipped a tooth on the inside, probably as handy get an engine

Great video!! thanks heaps. But can someone please help me find somewhere I can buy those springs for the cables. I have a 10.5 hp Briggs and stratton that uses the exact same throttle/choke setup as shown here. I am in Australia so any help will be appreciated.

Check on ebay for most parts like that, the springs on the linkages themselves (that wrap around them) are just to keep everything tight, they will run without it but may cause a slight surge / lope. but if it doesn't then it shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for Watching!!!

i have a briggs stratton intek 65 pro and wondering if that has manual or automatick choke... it has a realy hige rpm.. =)
@fnaguitarplayer98 жыл бұрын
Not sure right off hand, but if it has a separate choke lever, then its manual. you probably have a governor issue or a linkage is hanging up. Thanks for Watching!!!

I have a 99 cent weed eater lawnmower with B&S with a 4.5 ftpsae..whatever, yadi yadi.....lol, you can already tell I don't know crap about lawnmowers....lol. Anyhow, it has an auto choke carb...and I would like to add the manual throttle. However, looking at my carb...it has 1 skinny spring and a regular size spring. Am I going to do away with these springs? It also has an "s" shape clip connects the choke to the governor? If I do away with the springs or "s" shape...it's gonna disconet gov.

I cleaned my carburator on my 10hp Briggs an now it idles at turtle speed an i have my throttle at Rabbit speed. what did I do wrong
@fnaguitarplayer98 жыл бұрын
Sounds like the linkage that connects between the carburetor and governor arm may have came loose or the governor spring is broke or came loose while you were working on it. Thanks for Watching!!!

+fnaguitarplayer9 all that is fine I got it to idle up but then it cuts off.. I think I'm just gonna find a new card .. a new carb cost less than the bucket of carb cleaner

mine has two small wires how to hook them up
@fnaguitarplayer97 жыл бұрын
There will be a small hole right beside where the linkage connects, it will go in there, it just keeps the linkages tight. Thanks for Watching!!!
