How to Set Up Your Ancestor Altar (Shrine or Boveda) Beginner and Intermediate

Understand that how we in the diaspora do this is not done this way in the Isese tradition of Ifa in Nigeria. However, those in the west have adopted a way of doing this that has been practiced for years and still opens the door for progress. People of all backgrounds may do this.
Honoring your ancestors is not limited to a particular practice, background, or culture. Those in the diaspora have been honoring them in ways unknown to us. From picture frames on the wall to pictures on an entry table. From stories of them when they were alive to our experiences with them. Just because it wasn't called reverence does not mean we didn't do it.
Many cultures, African, Asian, Indigenous, Latin, and more honor their ancestors year-round and not just on special days. Their blood runs through your veins. Although you do not know all their names and some of you may not know any of your ancestors due to your circumstances, it doesn't mean they are not a part of you. Honoring them will bring not only direction in your life but a sense of belonging and understanding.
You are amazing because they existed. They are your door to the things you do not understand. They are your guides, your protectors when you do not think you have them, the ones to hold your hands to bring you closer to what you are destined to do and be in this life.
The Ancestors are your foundation. Start with them and all else will become evident.
May those who start on this journey continue to be guided by their Ancestors and their Ori.

You can snuff it out daily and only light when you are in the space for meditation and prayer. Do not blow it out of possible. Use a candle snuffer or a plate or something.

😊My pleasure. If you can do outside your room then do so. If not, make sure to put out candle or put up items when not in use. Sexy time not respectful when there and sleep can tend to ne interrupted often. Otherwise, try a floating shelf. Some disguise on a hall entry table. Some in a closet or utility room. Just do what you can.

Understood. However, you do have ancestors that did. So you can make sure to say something that doesn't deal with the addiction of that energy. I have ancestors that passed due to alcoholism, but that doesn't stop me from using the gin or giving wine, etc. It is my understanding that addictions don't follow you to the afterlife.

Do not place any living people on your ancestor alter. Not even their names in written form. The alter is for your ancestors not you.

From the Latin perspective it is all called such but typically outside. Just to make sure it is clear. Nonetheless, yes it is fine to do so. You may even cover with a white cloth or sheet.

There is a live I just did that speaks about how to do one that you can remove and put up when you don't have space. I can't recall which one at the moment. That said, pose the question to your partner that simply asks, when you have departed do you want to be remembered?

How close can an ancestor altar be to other altars in the home? Is it okay to create a crystal grid on the altar?

Good question. They should have their own space away from other alters. Crystal grids are not for the ancestors they are for heightening your senses. Remember your alter is a homage to them, not for what you like or do.
