Given we are trying to 'spoof' the internet into thinking we are in another country, is it best practice to connect to / choose a country that you are NOT actually in? 2. So are you saying, if I trust my work and home network, then a VPN is really only good for when I'm trying to access the internet from outside of those two networks? 3. Are you also saying that, in order to watch a USA TV show (catch-up TV) , I have to make sure I'm connected to a USA server (sorry, sounds like a stupid question but just want to make sure)? No stupid questions :) Here are my answers: 1) It depends on your use case. Some people just don't want to give away their location, in which case it doesn't matter which country as long as it's not your actual IP address. For those who want to stream content in another country, then yes, you need to choose a different country than the one you're in. 2) As far as security is concerned, yes. However, if you're trying to spoof your location, then you need a VPN no matter what network you're using. 3) Yes, you need to be connected to a US server or else it won't stream.

Yes you can! It's a little more complicated than setting it up on a computer, but it can be done. Some VPNs, such as ExpressVPN, even sell routers with the VPN already installed on it!

In the video you mentioned twice that you close the VPN down when you are not say...streaming a video...but you didn't mention as to why you would close it down and not use it all the time? It seems like you would want to use the VPN all the time. I am interested in it as one of the trading platforms I want to use in the US isn't set up for US users. Thanks for your time and help.

Thanks for the comment, Rob. Personally, I don’t need a VPN connection 24/7, but if I did I would rather set it up on my router. Running the VPN on my computer or mobile device takes up processing power and battery life.

If you use a VPN server that has US based servers, then yes you will have an IP from the US. However, it may be possible that your employer's IT dept has some filtering/monitoring in place to detect IP ranges from known VPN servers.

Quick question: Can a VPN be on only one computer on a shared network? Example: My home has 3 computers, 3 phones, sometimes tablets, and Nvidia Shield. I want to hook an older PC to my TV and use a VPN on it, but we have 2 computers in our home that VPN's are restricted from being on bc of work requirements and software/program requirements. Can I have it on the one PC and it not effect the others, even though they all us the same internet connection? Maybe not so quick question. Sorry. Lol.

Two quick answers: First, most commercial VPNs let you install and use your VPN account on multiple devices (most between 4-7 devices simultaneously). So you can add it to all your phones and computers. Another option would be to install the VPN on your WiFi router. In this way, even your work computers could get on the VPN as long as it's connecting to that WiFi router. Does that make sense?

Greetings. Your video was simple and too the point, thanks for the info sir👌🏽. What I want to ask though is: once you activate (turn on) let's say Express VPN does it make ALL your internet traffic show under the new IP address of what ever country you selected? Like if I am downloading a movie through a download manager (not the integrated downloader in Google Chrome) or any other software or client for that matter. Incase I explained this badly what I am asking is: does the VPN cover any and all internet activity once I click the activation/on button of the app?

Great question. Going the way I’ve shown you here, it covers all internet traffic. If you only download and use the ExpressVPN Chrome extension instead of the full desktop app, then it will only encrypt data accessed via the browser. Does this answer your question?

hey quick question, there are websites that have my ip tracked and can locate by just typing in my name as it has my ip memorized. can a vpn prevent from said website to locate my ip adress or does my home ip change when i’m on a vpn. Accessing the internet from a VPN server will automatically change your IP address. That doesn’t change what has already been tracked, but at least you can keep them from seeing what you do from now on forward.

It depends on the VPN service, but most of them offer what are known as "simultaneous connections". This refers to the number of devices that can be connected to the service at the same time. You can usually download the software on as many devices as you want, though.

you said it might require you to put in your password- which password--the code they send?? i have had troube setting up a VCN twice because when the requirement for password came up i had no idea what password it wanted and i could not find any in my list of passwords. i had to cancel twice and was very frustrated because without that "password" i could not continue. can you help? thanks i have a MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017)

When you subscribe to a VPN, you need to create a username and password. Sometimes, they send you an email with a username and password that you use. Either way, this is what you need.

Boy oh boy oh boy. Hi Josh. I watched one of your videos yesterday on VPN providers and I decided to go with Surfshark. Problem: After I purchased and downloaded it, it won’t install on my mac. I’m on OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 So after it was installed it gave me the folder with the circle and cross in it indicating I couldn’t install. Since yesterday I’ve tried support and they gave me the Tunnelblick method and I can’t understand it cause I don’t have a config. file extension. So the Tunnelblick installed on my menu bar but I don’t know how to connect it to Surfshark and how to make or get an vpn extension file as they had in the instruction like .tblk, ovpn, etc. Did I just waste my money? I spent 3 hours talking to customer service. 3 different people in total, they kept hanging up on me once they realized they couldn’t help. Finally, I was able to cancel once the representative finally admitted that he couldn’t help me. I don’t know if it didn’t work because I was in a 3rd world country (for work) or they just have a bad system. I finally settled with HotspotShield because they work.

Can someone please please please tell me how to connect to my isp using a different isp so I'm traveling over the summer and in a different country every month or so, I want to connect to some websites but some countries or isp block them even if they are safe and just blogs, is there a way to use my own personal isp back in Canada? I already use RDP & TeamViewer but they are both really slow and not sure if they are secure, also VPN isn't a real good option cuz major VPNs don't even work at all in some countries. P.S. You can set up your own VPN with a Raspberry Pi in your home country, on your home ISP. Of course, that requires you to keep an active ISP account there or leach off of family.
