You have the best video on sewing neckbands. Too many others have annoying music, and go 100 mph sewing not explaining anything. I think they just put out a video to show-off and not really teach. You have an excellent way of describing what to do and how to do the neckline. Thank you for the tips you gave especially to use a stretch stitch and pin between the fabric.

Very easy to follow, thank you. How did you know how big to cut the neckband? I would think by measuring neck hole and then taking a few cms off so that it would be able to stretch onto neck hole?
@Jessalli2 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly that. I think the averages is between 90-95% of the neck-hole measurement. Depending on the fabric choice and the bounce back in the elastic. x

Fantastic video. New to sewing. Is there a certain grain direction that you cut the neckband?
@Jessalli Жыл бұрын
Yes, always grain running up and down so you have the most stretch going horizontally (around the neck) so you get the most movement when you pull it over your head.
@Ausanyday2 жыл бұрын
Would there be any ways to measure and make the neck bind when the pattern does not provide one? Your video was very useful, thank you! :)
@Jessalli Жыл бұрын
Yes there's a measured method. I'm pretty sure it's the measured length of the neckhole, minus 10% for the length of the neckband piece X the width you desire doubled plus seam allowance. But you might need to do a test run first as it depends on the stretch of the fabric too. x

Hi Tereasa, this method only works with stretch fabric. You can get movement on the bias, but probably not enough for a neck hole like this. x

Hi Jess. How much shorter do we cut the neckband? Thank you!

I have the same problem, usually on thinner jersey. Apparently its all down to too much stretch as you sew it. I find I can reduce it by using a walking foot.... might be worth a try. And if you find the answer - tell me! haha. :) x

I got a few puckers even though I was stretching as I went, its a very fine jersey - does that make it harder? Is it typical to get puckers in first few attempts?
@Jessalli4 жыл бұрын
Fine jersey is harder yes, it's just easily mis-shaped. Have you got puckers actual puckers? Yes it's very easy to get puckers the first few times, just make sure you're stretching everything just until it's flat. x

Is there a formula for the size of the neckband, what is the ratio of the neckband : neck edge?

can I put pyramid studs on the neckbad if the material is jersey, or will it not let the fabric stretch well?
@Jessalli3 жыл бұрын
As long as they're spaced apart so you can stretch the fabric in between them, they should be ok. Might be worth testing it out first.
@MrsKatieP6 жыл бұрын
How do you make sure the neckband is the right length for the neckline? I recently made a Molly top from SOI and had to rip out, shorten and resew the neckband 3 times because it was too big.
@Jessalli6 жыл бұрын
Oh no! How annoying. And you cut the right size? It may be a little bigger, but shouldn't be that much bigger, or it'll be gapping. Maybe don't sew the neckband until you pin it all the way around the neck hole and check how much seam allowance would be left at the back of the neck? x
@WendyWard6 жыл бұрын
Always machine tack your t-shirt neckbands on first to check they're the right length :o)

Que tela es ?esta bellisima y cuanto le reduces a la tela que va en el cuello ?.gracias
@Jessalli4 жыл бұрын
The fabric is a jersey originally from Minerva Crafts, but I think it's out of stock now. Depending on the pattern, the neckline can be roughly half and inch smaller, maybe a little more. If you're self drafting, make it bigger and baste stitch it to check, you can always unpick and make it smaller. x

Which grain do you cut the neckband on ?
@Jessalli3 жыл бұрын
So the majority of stretch on stretch fabrics is horizontal across the fabric width not parallel to the selvedge (grainline) so cut your neckband on the stretch grain to ensure good elasticity return. x

What does it mean if it seams a bit waves at the seams, or Puckering on the outside, in the inside it’s flat but on the outside it looks like puckering? Does it mean I’m stretching it too much ?
