Years ago my father took my calculator away and told before I use it I should try learning to calculate without it. This would help me establish a better understanding of math and how to use this knowledge. I am finding the same applies to sewing. There are many “tools” designed to save time or increase expertise and outcome. But all too often one finds their attempts to use them unsuccessful. Because they don’t have a basic knowledge of how to accomplish the task without them and soon they are seen as a hindrance, a progress stopper. I was this person and when I first came across this video I quickly ignored it thinking it was too “outdated” and that the modern approach using specific presser feet for this task would turn out better. Boy was wrong. So I had to humbly return like a dog with his tail between his legs and strictly follow your instructions. I am truly every so grateful to you because I found I am now able to execute this task better and better with each practice session. Now I feel more confident and comfortable Thanks again!

Thank you! In my almost 50 years of sewing practically everything, I have come to the same conclusion - the rolled hem foot only works under ideal conditions (that is, fantasy land). I have made it work a couple times on very stable fabric perfectly on grain. But mostly it is a waste of time.

Thank you for this tutorial! I have a 40ish yr old Kenmore machine. I saw rolling hem zipper feet being sold in places like Temu but was confused as to how to attach them until I saw another tutorial about them and realized they are for much newer models where the feet just 'snap' on. My machine requires feet to be installed/screwed on the left side like yours. I've always struggled with the rolled hem - would try to pre-roll and pin it down then try to sew it in place. It sort of worked but I could never roll a nice fine hem. The tension is the key as you have shown. I think I will try and find the left zipper foot. :)

I’ve been struggling with & delaying a tulle hem that has fine silk godets which have a curve in them despite hanging straight! It’s been on my rail for 3weeks until today. Your tutorial has sent me right back to basics after I probably rushed it initially and stretched the silk curves so they were too “lettuce” like, but after rewatching this and some very careful sewing with more controlled tension of the fabric I’ve managed to get it correct -after unpicking it from my first go. Sewing professionally for 15yrs but everyday is a school day, theres always something new or something to refresh on the things you already knew but just can’t think of in the moment. Thank you for your fab videos.

I'm coming a bit late to the party here. I've found your channel during the "unprecedented" Spring Coronavirus Quarantine. I'm using my time to do continuing education which is how I found your content. It has given me new confidence that I do know what I am doing and I am not 'reinventing the wheel' when I come across something challenging. You are very generous with your knowledge, a true teacher at heart! Now the comment I would like to make on this subject is the vast majority of rolled hems are never on grain because the curve of the hemline caused by the skirt drape. The horsehair portion of your tutorial showed it best. Think about a pattern piece of a skirt piece laying flat. The hem is cut curved. Even column skirts have a slight curve to them. This is probably the most challenging of hemlines to get perfect because of the bias grain, stretch, fabric weight and additional tension needed to accomplish. I have been doing this for 30 years so now it is just muscle memory but when I have to teach an apprentice it is not easy. For a beginner I always suggest sewing a straight stitch on a fold 1/2" from marked hemline, cutting near the stitch line and stitching again folding 1/4" up which is the marked hem. Still takes a lot of practice. The rolled hem feet are worthless.
