Love this. You can actually sew the pieces together (the step in the beginning) before to sew each piece separately if that makes sense. Like sew the ends of each piece together and then sew them into a long tube.

If I could recommend a technique if you would like to make it slightly less bunched but not slide around, there is a technique I learned making a wedding veil. You would sew 2 parallel rows of a straight stitch on the longest length setting with a relatively loose tension. Then before turning inside out you would bunch the fabric up how you want it, as tight or as loose as you like it., adjusting to make it all even. You do this by tying the top and bottom threads from one end together so they cannot pull out and then starting at the other end begin pulling the thread while pushing the fabric. I hope this makes sense without seeing it. When you are done, just sew one last straight stitch all the way down between the 2 rows that are now gathered, this one will need to be on normal settings, and you might need pins. Once are done, turn the whole thing inside out and close. Oh BTW if you hem the ends twice before turning inside out, then you could close them with a mattress stitch by hand and you would not see anything. This would need to be done in one long piece, so you would sew the panels end to end first, possibly with a French seam. I know this way is more complicated and would take longer, but it would allow for a longer boa with less fabric if cost per yard is an issue.

It is a really good idea but o think there is an easier way of doing it. You can attached all the stripes together (4 strips = 1 long rectangle) then do the tube. Just a suggestion but we are different so everyone thinks different.

OMG I effing LOVE YOU! I'm currently attempting to start clothing design and have been taking on any project friends have for me so I can get some sewing practice. A friend of mine is a burlesque performer and asked if I could figure out how to make tulle boas. You're the first video to pop up and I am so thankful! I am definitely going to have to purchase a lot of material because I'm sure she wants the ultimate dramatically full boa! Who doesn't. I am going to try sewing the ribbon to one end of the tulle and hide it with tassels or something. Not sure yet but I'll come back with more ideas and to learn more from you! 🥰

@fletcherhurley61765 жыл бұрын
Interesting. Love this idea. I might do this and use less yards, but in order to prevent it from sliding around the string I would just turn it all inside out and gather the boa to the length of my ribbon and then sew the ribbon to the gathered seam-allowance of the boa. Personally don’t want to spend that much $$ on a boa but this is great inspo!

A couple things. I would've sewn the strips together while they were still flat and then made one long ass tube, as opposed to making 4 tubes and sewing them together. Also, to fix the problem of the fabric sliding all over the ribbon, throw in a couple stitches about every foot or so on the boa and you'll be golden.

Oh my gosh! This is exactly what I was looking for! I’m super excited for the Barbie movie to come out and was discussing this with my 20 year old daughter. She said her friends all want to dress up to go see it and she invited me to tag along. Well, one of my favorite parts of my 70s & 80s barbie collection is the boas for her gowns. And whether you’re aware of this or not, as soon as I saw your image, I was like, “This lady knows true Barbie fashion!” Thanks for the tutorial! I can’t wait to make my ultimate accessory! (I mean, besides convincing my 13 yr old son to wear a gold tuxedo!) And those earrings are perfect too! You are a beautiful Barbie!

That's a lot easier than the way I ended up making boas for my Rocky Horror cast. I used spools of 10" wide sparkle organza in three colors (red black and gold) The spools are about 25 yards long. I cover stitched both long edges of each spool, then sewed a zigzag stitch down the center to use for gathering, fished a ribbon through the lines of zigzag, then sewed the three colors together with the gold in the middle. It was a PITA to sew but they look fabulous.

I've been thinking of an easier way of turning one enormously long tube together so you can simplify the joining of each tube by sewing them flat before you sew the tube. I've not tried it myself but it'd be worth a trial experiment. Reality doesn't always work as well as theory though! I'd put an object with a little weight like a rubber ball (not very heavy so you don't strain the weave of the fabric) or perhaps some coins or metal washers etc and put it inside a small bag (made from scrap fabric, ideally something a bit silky so it glides easily through the tube) which you place INSIDE one end of the long tube and sew the bag and tube end together temporarily closing the tube in the process. Alternatively you could tie the end into a knot and attach it that way but it'd be infuriating if it came undone part way! Now you lift up the end of the tube, stand up (perhaps on a chair), hold the tube up, shake it a bit letting the weight of the ball pull the end of the tube through the rest of the tube as you grab the next section and pull it up until you get to the end. What do you think?
