Hi! I'm Sean owner of the shop Prodigal Son Apparel. I purchased an industrial sewing machine specifically for sewing my custom patches onto all types of hats. The heat press just wasn’t cutting it. No matter how many ways I tried I couldn't get away from the permanent crease marks left on the hats by the press, making them unsalable. So after much research, and a lot of thought, I took the leap and made the purchase of an Industrial Post Bed Sewing Machine. I love it! Now I’ve got professional results, with stitching that really helps make my patches pop! Now I have a finished clean look and stitching that gives my patches that extra edge. A product I’m proud to sell at my shop!

Thanks so much for this video. It's super helpful that you take the time to explain what you have learned. I'm in the same situation with using a heat press machine for applying patches. Hey there... Just wanted to say Thank You So Much for this very informative video! My business partner and I have a Fishing Apparel Business that we started a few years ago and are planning to add some leather patch hats into the mix. We have purchased a Highlead Industrial Model 810 Machine from a local dealer out of Dallas and an OM Tech 60 Watt Laser Cutter/Engraver for our leather patches. After initially playing with the 810, we decided that we would be better served with a gear reducer as well. Thought about building one, but decided just to order the one in your description (seemed faster and easier) Anyway, just wanted to give you a shout and say "Thanks Again" for taking the time to share your knowledge! Love your work!

Thank you for the great feedback! I hope to get some more videos up soon. Just to many irons in the fire at the moment...I do love the idea of getting yourself the OM Tech 60 Watt Laser Cutter/Engraver. I've been looking at similar lasers myself and want to eventually invest in something of the like. I really want the option of being able to make multiple designs without having to order a stamp for each design. Even though I do love how my stamped leather looks as a finished product I think a laser would be ideal for a broader market and more designs. Thanks again for the posting the comment. Best wishes on your plans!

Hey Sean... quick question.. When you installed the speed reducer, I understand that the pulley from the top of the machine and the 2 inch pulley on the reducer line up for the 1st belt to run in a straight line. My question is did you have to move the motor over in order for the 2nd belt coming of the 6 inch pulley to properly line up with the motor pulley? or is the belt running at an angle? Thanks!
@prodigalsonapparel
@prodigalsonapparel 2 жыл бұрын
@@stacylambeth9883 Hi Stacy, My servo motor did end up moving as much to the right as possible to better line up with the smaller pulley. I think you need about 3/4"-1" of movement. My motor mounting hardware did allow for some play. But even with it moved as much as possible I'm at a slight angle. Hopefully you've got a little play on your motor to allow some movement without re-drilling anything.

@prodigalsonapparel
@prodigalsonapparel 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! Yeah, initially I was concerned about the roller marks, now I kinda like them. I've convinced myself that the roller marks give the patches a little extra character. I have found that some other leather items (like key-chains) that I stained after sewing, the marks are greatly reduced and in some cases gone completely. Maybe a little moisture along the edge with a Q-tip might help?

Sorry about the delay. Im not here that much anymore. Initially I was worried about the marks but now I like them. They give the leather a more authentic look. Ive never had a complaint and have done thousands of hats. I think at first I looked into the same thing but the grip actually helps the leather along. You need the traction. Personally I wouldn't worry about it much. You can control the pressure a bit to reduce the marks if you like. God bless you to brother!

I think it would be really difficult if you dont have the elevated post or a cylindrical arm on your sewing machine. Especially if your using the trucker style or any hat with a rigid mesh backing. Its just really hard to flatten the meshed hats plus with the bill its difficult to get around the front of the hat. But if your using softer flat dad hats or a hat that isn't so rigid it could be possible.

@@markhaddeman5304 I have the Hix B250. Unfortunately now I just use it to press labels on my shirts. I've heard good things about the Stahl IQ360. If it can achieve the "crease free" hats it claims then that's a big deal. It's seems to be the only one that can from what I've seen. If that was an option when I purchased mine I would have leaned toward that one for sure knowing what I know now. I'm sure it comes with a hefty price point, but considering I've got a $700 paper weight in my shop that occasionally presses labels and not hats its probably worth the extra cost.

I see a bunch of cheaper 810 machines like Ikonix and Yamata etc. I definitely want to use thread size 138 for nice leather patches. but most of them dont specify good specs on max thread size. some say will go up to needle 22 which is good for 138 but then they say 69 size is the largest. So its a bit confusing. The 228 model you have is a bit more $$$ than the 810 models from different brands.

Yeah I haven't looked into the those machines you mentioned. But like you said, if they recommend size 22 needles you should be able to use 92 or 138 thread. So that is a mixed message. I ended up installing a reducer which increased my torque, so I'm very comfortable with a 138 thread. Plus much less speed=more control.

I want to buy one but can’t seem to get that information anywhere. Knowing that the 228 works with 138 size I may just buy that and the reducer.

@@andreytsarenko6965 Yeah, probably better to buy it sooner then later. Everything keeps going up, up, up. The gear reducer is already $50 more then when I purchased it over a year ago. Crazy inflation!

@@prodigalsonapparel Hey, So I purchased the post bed, little different one but very much the same. I do want to run size 138. Normally they recommend running size 21 needle at least for that but I see you are using size 19 needle with a slanted point. After doing these for a while can you update me on your choice of needle to do this and the thread if its still all same as your video or little different now that you do this for a while.

@@andreytsarenko6965 Yes, I still use the size 19 needle with 138 bonded nylon. I haven't had any issue. This is the needle Im currently using www.thethreadexchange.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=NDL-717532+%2F+717535

Yeah, sorry. This was my first video and everything was in screen when I was filming, but after I edited and loaded on KZbin it was cropped without me realizing. I'm getting better as I go...hopefully!
