Great video Justin! Definitely covered the basics and then addressed the rest. I think the first three were spot on, however I would’ve liked to see the remainder analysed a bit better especially on female / male comparison. You touched on the sub-dominant males/females too, which is often where most of us struggle to differentiate. As you know, I have a female Blue Black ram that is now more clearly defined as a subdominant male. I guess that it’s pretty tricky with these variants to clearly distinguish the sexes. And naturally, these variants will develop as they mature. So, it isn’t always apparent to know the sex of a young individual in these cases. The old adage still stands: Wait until they mature and then it should be clearer later on. Of course, this is aided by these individuals pairing up (while we humans are still wondering). Nature is never ceased to amaze me. Much love your boet, Oom André 😂

Thanks André! You made very good points there. To be honest, that is a tricky one to tackle even for me sometimes. Especially with, like you said, the darker lines. When I select new pairs from breeders I always make sure that the sexing stereotypes are 100% met with in the two individuals I choose to make sure that I have a great chance for breeding. But I guess, as breeders, and trying to sex rams for our customers, buyers or pet shops it comes down to having a lot of trial and error and getting that feedback. In other words, it takes a long time of breeding and selecting your own pairs to establish these characteristics that you can rely on😄👍 Dankie, Oom!

Very early on, actually🙂👍 As you saw with me sexing those juveniles that are only a couple of weeks old, it can be done as early as when they begin to develop colour.

Hi there, I'm new to keeping rams cichlids and have a important question to ask, is it normal for rams to glass surf a lot when you first get them ? and will this behaviour eventually stop ? the water softness, parameters and everything else are 100% and the tank is also heavily planted with a sandy substrate and plenty of swimming space, I just don't know what's coursing this behaviour.

Blue/black is a term coined in Australia a lot for a ram that comes from a dark ram spawn that looks very similar to a GBR. The genetics of the fish goes off a bell model where the two extremes (the tails) are the extremely dark and the much lighter but still darker than GBR fish. Please let me know if this makes sense now 🙂👍

@@JustinsFishRoom Thank you Justin, so this dark spawn produces both darks n much lighter shade resembling more of a gbr features which you folks coined blue/blacks. So would this then mean your Black Celestials are indeed a black ram which we would say in USA DARK KNIGHT RAM more or less; the dark knights here spawn both black rams n gold rams…say 50/50… 60/40 percentage of fry. Does your Black Celestial line produce both black n gold fry from each spawn as well with nearly the same percentages mentioned above? Or does your Black Celestials produce also Black Celestials n Blue/Black fry from each spawn? Or does your Black Celestials spawn 100% true? Thank you!

Hi Justin, I have my 1st pair of GBR’s. I know one is a male for sure….but keep going back and forth on the other. It is only about an inch long ( the male is bigger and probably older since it has so much more color) and has almost no color yet. Is it just too young to decipher the gender? If I shine light on the undecided ram, I see coloring in the black spot, whereas I see none without light specifically on it. Hope you can help. Thanks 🙂

This could be how the ram is raised in the farm so you may not be able to do anything about it at all. I would try and locate a reputable local breeder to source your rams from

They can be as young as 2 weeks old but it takes a lot of experience to decipher at that stage. I would say you could decipher the dominant fish comfortably at 3 weeks old

Bolivian Rams are a little different. Males have a little lump above their eyes whereas females have a smoother more rounded head. The central fins are longer, more colourful and pointier in the males as opposed to the more rounder female’s central fins. The male Bolivian also has more colour and has two red streamer-like extensions on either side of the tail and the female does not have as pronounced extensions. Hope this helps 🙂
