Hi Justin, congrats on the 47c and wanted to just thank you for the coverage on Black Rams. With all Rams, I've learned as you state, the PH and Temps are not as important as the other factors, (e.g. good water quality). And finally someone has corroborated what I've been saying in my live-streams that higher temps do NOT mean better hatch-rates, they actually foster more fungus. Thanks for the great video!
@JustinsFishRoom2 жыл бұрын
Thank you 😂 Yes, higher temps can cause more fungus without anti fungal measures. But like anything in bio chemistry, it speeds up reactions and that includes embryo development 🙂👍

@@JustinsFishRoom Thanks. I agree with that. I would like to ask then if you have found that Black Rams hatch in the same time period as do German Blues under the same temperature and conditions? I have noted a difference.

Congrats on being monetised. You were saying, enjoy your fish, well I have a true story to tell you. I had 2 pairs of rams in a 2 ft tank, they both spawned at the same time, each at either side of the tank. Everything was going great, both pairs had managed to get their fry to the free swimming stage. Well, this was the most amazing experience, I ever had, I was sitting in front of the tank watching them, they were being very aggressive, then I realised 1pr was stealing the fry from the other pair, I couldn't believe it. It was truly amazing, by the end of the day, I had one pair with all the fry, the other pair had nothing. So yeah, you never know how much joy they can bring, just from watching, I will never forget it. One week later the pair which had nothing laid again, so listen to Justin when he says watch and enjoy your fish.

Hahaha that is the funniest and most interesting story I’ve heard in a while! Thanks so much for sharing - made my day 😀 Fry stealing is a very common occurrence and I have even seen single male rams become broody over fry floating in a clear container (protecting them and bringing bits of food to them), so it truly is an observers hobby 😉👍

Justin, do u let them hatch in that tank or do remove each rock and place in holders (how do you place/sit the holder or plastic container floating in tank ? Is it hooked over the edges or just sitting there?) Plus if leaving each rock with eggs in there how do you stop other pairs/fish from eating new brown fry? Do their own parent do a good enough job at protecting each of their own spawns ? I intend on in,y having my dark ram (as u clarified today as a female ..lol , although it was thought of a a male ((but bought originally as a female)) totally confusing . Anyhooo she is a she, so il keep her and since her electric blue partner is not doing so well and unsure if he will survive (checked on him after work n he’s resting on substrate a lot but did come out to eat worms) I want to buy another dark ram male ? Or an electric blue male for the dark female to breed with. Can we buy from you if I’m in perth? Iv never bought from the eastern states before and I’d prefer not to as the long travel concerns me and I hate to see a fish die just coz we humans transport it miles n miles. Is it wise to get 2 more rams, so the outcome would then be having 2 females and one male…or is that a recipe for disaster , will the pair up pick in the single girl? I recent,y had up to 6 tanks going but with bad back,neck n wrist keeping so many tanks n doing w/changes is really hard for me and the tanks were suffering in condition. I want to cut back to just 3 tanks, ideally just 2 but if breeding il need to keep that 3rd growout running .

My tank is 3ft long I got two pairs, they each claimed a side of the tank as I set up a dragon stone center divide. They can swim over it and do as they are figuring out territory. But my question is once they figure out who has what side. How do I go about feeding them? Do you put some food on either side so they don't cross the line and fight? Any help for you or anyone else would be most helpful.

Is it true that if you can’t find black rams then just get gold head balloon rams or other types and get them to have spawn and their would be a chance that some of the fry’s might be black rams?
@JustinsFishRoom2 жыл бұрын
This would be somewhat true in America where the base genetics come from an outcross with a gold ram. The fry that come from the black knight spawns are black knights and golds. So, the short answer is possibly and I would say less likely in balloon rams🙂👍

I’ve had troubles with aggression in my 3 rams, 2 black females and a blue male, any advice? They’re in 4 foot tank with good territories on each side and it’s divided with water wisteria. The goal is just to keep them not bothered with breeding right now. I’m going to rescape with more driftwood, rocks and plants for more line of site breaks and probably try a small schooling fish a bit later.

It sounds like your future plan is going to be great to prevent further aggression. I would just focus on getting that drift wood and some larger plants such as Anubias to give them some more out of sight areas. Let me know how you go with it. If the aggression does continue and it’s bad I would try identify who the aggressor is and then seperate that individual 🙂👍

@@JustinsFishRoom Hopefully one day Justin! One last question; could I know what your water hardness is please? I’ve heard that hard water can prevent eggs from getting fertilised by the male.

How do you break those flower pots in half just perfect ???
@JustinsFishRoom3 жыл бұрын
Hahaha! It is a bit of an art...I just use a hammer and lightly tap the pot starting from the base corner. Once I have a crack forming I guide the crack where I want it to go by slightly tapping with the hammer. Sometime the pots just make their own weird shapes:)

Hello Justin…Ive bred n raised many many rams for the past three years with great success. GBR’s EBR’s …what you call BLUE/BLACKS…however, just recently I successfully bred n hatched a spawn from what you would call your BLACK CELESTIALS. For me it was clear to see that it was not a good pairing…Black x Black… something is not pairing right in the genetic profile/dna structure…im not a biologist but its not a great pairing. If you don’t mind, but what has been your experience with pairing your black celestial x black celestial? Thank you!
@JustinsFishRoom2 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is true, my friend. You can breed BC X BC for only one or two gens before the compounding of the hitchhiking genes begins. It’s best to partner them up with a dark line ram to improve quality 🙂👍

Great vid, I love both your and KeepingFishSimple’s videos! I breed Black Rams in the Washington DC area but they are not as totally dark as yours. Yours are stunning. Was wondering what tips you might have for ensuring a large spawn of eggs? I routinely get somewhere around the 100-125 range but would like to see it a bit higher
@JustinsFishRoom3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Chris! Just would like to personally welcome you to my channel:) Thank you for watching this video and I am glad you enjoyed it. One thing I can say is that a good quality diet doesn't just make your breeding pairs healthy, but also makes both the spawn sizes larger and the success of that spawn higher. I have video on how I made my fish food that I feed all my rams so I would go check that out. Also, keeping the water clean is a huge factor in successful spawns. These guys are used to being constantly supplied with freshwater in the wild and whilst we can't exactly mimic these conditions, we can get as close to them as possible:) Contact me on Instagram if you would like me to answer any more questions so I can be a bit more detailed:)

Everything I'm researching is saying to have them in lower ph water so 6 and below? I'm guessing they can be in a wide range??

I’ve never heard of rams being kept successfully below 6.0. But if that is what works for you then go for it. Otherwise, just stick to the suggestions here 🙂👍

@@JustinsFishRoom well google and forums are saying lower ph but every keeper I've watched has successfully used anything in the parameters you've set. The only thing I've seen that people have keep track of is ppm. Do you have a cheaper meter that you recommend?
@JustinsFishRoom2 жыл бұрын
By ppm do you mean TDS? I don’t keep track of TDS. I just look at temp, pH and ammonia cycles. Everything else doesn’t seem to matter with Rams in my experience 👍👍

@@JustinsFishRoom Thank you so much for the response it really helps having someone with experience to talk you thru things! One more thing. Have you had a problem with substrate and the black rams? Im reading that they prefer sand but I have a coarse gravel tank. Im thinking I should cap it with a good layer of sand or remove it and just use sand which is going to be alot of work!

@@JustinsFishRoom how many degrees cooler say 80 if the water is 84? 1/3 water change? I have always heated the water up to match tank water temp. I have heard this 2x now. never knew it would work on rams too. Thanks for your awesome work with rams and sharing your info it is invaluable.

Just wanted to let you know how instructional and inspirational you've been... kzbin.info/www/bejne/poqYYXuGgZt2eK8 We just sold our first batches to our local fish stores and wanted to thank you for all your knowledge, your generous sharing, and overall promotion of the breed. Of course we have a ton of questions but have been hesitant to bug ya... but we would appreciate any help as we stumble through the hobby/business world of Rams. Any experience with sudden and massive air bladder issues with a large portion of a fry population (1 month old) when growing out in isolation (100+ in a 1/2 gallon Tupperware)? We're thinking it was overcrowding and poor water maintenance... trying to fast them and hope they recover, but they're really lethargic, side swimming, and bottom dwelling on their side. Good on ya and keep up the amazing work!
