Learn how to shade with pencils to create the illusion of form. In this pencil shading timelapse I’m using HB, 2B & 4B pencils, a blending stump, a regular eraser and a kneadable eraser (putty rubber).

Thanks for your comment, I'm glad the video was helpful. For the shadow I use all 3 pencils - HB, 2B and 4B (4B for the darkest areas, HB for the lightest.

Can you use cotton for blending?

You could - I'm not sure of it's effect. You can make your own blender - a tortillion - by rolling up a piece of paper.

This is actually a bad tutorial! One first thing I got taught in shading was trying to practice my hand’s movement so that I didnt have to twist the paper, because imagine when you become a more hardcore artist and you got chances to draw and paint murals, how are you supposed to twist the wall if you need to shade or draw something with different directions? Avoid twisting papers while shading at your best! Also, shading strokes supposed to be seen so that it could show layers and depth of the facets that are shaded. This guy just literally PAINT the cube a bit darker there and a bit lighter here. Cant see the shading layers building up. Like what the heck? 😳🤯

Thanks for taking the time to write a comment. Firstly - there is no RIGHT OR WRONG way to make art. This is just one way of working. I always advise students to look at many different techniques and find what works for them. Secondly - pencil shading and painting murals require quite different approaches and techniques particularly because the media and the scale are vastly different. Thirdly - just as there are many ways to shade in pencil, there are many ways to paint - most artists have evolved their styles and techniques over their lifetimes - an open mind and an acceptance of different opinions is the best way to grow. Wishing you best of luck in becoming a more hardcore artist.
