Excellent timing! My rescue Phal is plumping up her first bud after a recovery and i’m so proud of her! It’s nice to be able to understand where the blooms might be facing when they emerge, based in her position! I can 100% understand why you have hundreds of orchids.. I thought I’d be totally over them by now (from being impatient) but they are such interesting character studies sometimes! Lolol

In one of your beginner videos on how to care for Phalaenopsis after flowers are spent, you mention that we should cut back the spike right below the most bottom spent flower skin. If we keep doing this after several years, wouldn't the spike get shorter and shorter to the point of the spike no longer exists? and will that trigger the plant to put out new flower spike(s)? Also, i would like to thank you very much for all the informative videos that you have produced so wonderfully. Two Christmasses ago, I received a Phalaenopsis Orchid from my neighbours, and after all the flowers died, I was close to throwing it away thinking that they only bloom once. And like everyone, i decided to look up on KZbin on how to care for orchids, and that was when you came into my life and taught me all about orchids. And now i go to stores looking for dying orchids to help revive them. THANK YOU!!!

If you cut the spike down and it eventually dries up, that spike will not grow anymore, but the orchid will put out new flower spikes. I hope that answers your question.
@dannyc9784
@dannyc9784 3 жыл бұрын
you have 3 options, leave the spike alone, sometimes you can get a couple more blooms towards the end of the spike. You can also cut below the last flowering node, which sometimes will stimulate another shorter flower spike. Or the best option imo and is also what Danni does, is cut the whole spike off just above the 1st bottommost nodes, to let the orchid know its done flowering and go into growth mode leaves/roots. If you keep your orchid in spike bud for a very long time it will drain the plant. If I have a choice between a secondary mediocre spike, or a healthy thriving plant that will produce a better blooming the following year, I will always choose the latter.

Thank you for your videos and platforms. I pretty much watch you daily and you’ve been a comfort to me. I took up orchids as a new hobby after my 23 year old son died in 2019. I rescued a very sick phal and she has bloomed for me twice now. I took a suggestion of yours and bought a terminal spike phal. It currently is in bloom. Do you think after the blooms drop that I can cut off part of the stem above the roots to see what will happen? Do you think it will survive and create a better plant? Your thoughts and opinions are like gold - so anything you suggest will be helpful.

I am so sorry about your losing your son. That's something a mother should never have to experience. 😥 I can answer your questions, though, about your orchid because I actually did this with my one and only orchid last spring. At that time, I'd had the orchid for several months. The original 3 blooms (2 on one stem and 1 on another) had fallen off shortly after December 2021. I'd watched several videos about how to get it to rebloom; I think it was Orchid girl who showed how to tell if the orchid is trying to create a new stem and if so, to cut off the old one that lost it's flowers, so it could apply it's energy to growing the new stem and new flowers. Anyway, I cut off the old stem just above the roots. Some videos said not to expect new blooms for a year or more, so I didn't have high expectations. However, the stem I'd left intact almost immediately began growing buds for flowers. The new stem that was coming in started growing very quickly! It was only about a month behind the other stem in forming buds for flowers then the blooms themselves. By December 2022, I had two stems full of flowers! I stopped counting after 5 or 6, but I think it has at least 5 on each stem. Obviously much more than the 2 I started out with (which later developed a small 3rd bloom before it lost it's blooms). And these blooms are fuller and healthier than I'd ever seen before. That was my experience. It was really difficult for me to make that decision: risk losing a stem that might produce more flowers and being left with only one? Or take the chance that doing so will produce a better, healthier plant? I don't regret doing the latter. Did you ever try this yourself? What were your results?

Not sure where to post my question. They are selling orchids with an arched stake so the flowers go up and back down again. What can I do to reshape that or handle the remaining flowers? They clipped between flowers. I’m guessing it helped them ship more orchids. But it’s confusing to position for light or change the clipping. There were three unopened buds when I purchased. Now two have opened but smaller.

Hey danny could you do a video on acclimatizing orchids which were choked in spaghnum moss in their nursery pots to more airier medium?? I have bought the sogo yukidian V3 twice and each time it got root rot within a week 😭
@Eryalb
@Eryalb 3 жыл бұрын
She has talked about it before. I would check out her videos where she changes the way she pots her Vanda's. If you have to repot an orchid right away, then you would want the new medium and set up to have a similar moisture level to the previous set up. For example, if you buy a Phalaenopsis potted in only sphagnum moss but want to put it in bark, then you would keep the bark moist and not let it get too dry. That way, the roots will not become shocked from growing from a very wet medium to a suddenly very dry medium. Does that make sense?

It's called bud blast and it usually happens from a sudden change in temperature. Could be it was outside in the cold and came in to a much a higher temp. phals don't care too much about humidity in my experience, but they do thrive more in 30-40+. I have the same issue in the winter, with my condo humidity around 20% with my heat on.

I usually leave them if the tip is still green, but if not I will trim it down to a little above the next node. I have one orchid that has branches on branches, it rebloomed twice from the same spike and even made a new spike. If the orchids health is compromised and isn't doing well, its better to cut the whole spike as close to the base as possible so it can focus on making new leaves and roots to recover.
