Thanks for posting this instructional video. One of the best, clearest, explanations I've seen for sharpening card scrapers. For those crafts people who now use a grinding wheel, I would suggest giving this method a try, and see for yourselves how much cleaner your shaving cuts become.

I thought I knew how to sharpen a card scraper until I viewed your video. NOW I really can sharpen my card scraper so it shaves like a plane. I made a file jig that you suggested and polished the surfaces and only put on a slight hook and the scrapers shave like a plane even on oak. BRAVO Many thanks!!

Thanks for the awesome information and video, I have never used card scrapers before, I am just starting into acoustic guitar construction, and I know I will be using a couple of these devices, I know about these scrapers and the burnisher, but I never knew how to prepare/fix them, bu the way your's was the first and only video I have watched, great stuff, thaniks again

What type of Wood is that, which you put your file into for polishing the scraper? I have a little piece that looks like it, but I don't know what it's called.

I'm sorry that I don't quite recall. It's either padauk or african rosewood. My guess is that it's padauk.

Whats the process for a scraper that is curved?
@HighlandWoodworking8 жыл бұрын
+munchkin5674 The same techniques apply to curved scrapers as well. You can find written detailed instructions here on the Highland Woodworking website: www.highlandwoodworking.com/how-to-use-sharpen-wood-scraper.aspx

Rather than press down with your fingertps to hold the face against the stone, press it down with your timber block. That way the edge will be finished along the entire edge not just wher your fingers are applying downward pressure.

+labrat7357 Thats the point of the ruler under the scraper when he hones the face 90* to the edge. Rob Cosman goes through explaining the reasoning behind this really old method in his vid about sharpening handplane irons.

+Briar Fox , Hi, I am aware of the ruler trick for plane irons and the reasoning behind it. Even when shim is used on a card scraper with just the finger tips it will still remove more material under the fingers and that is visible in the scratch patern shown in this video. Well known chairmaker, Brian Boggs, suggests using a wood block to avoid an uneven edge on your scraper. It depends if you want a really straight edge on your card scraper or if you are happy with one that has shallow scollops along the edge.

Seems to me that he should have demonstrated how to check for generation of a ragged burr during the filing and honing steps. If you don't raise a burr during these steps, then you never really got to the very edge. Of course, these ragged burrs need to be honed away before rolling the 'proper' burr.

shame to use such beautiful wood as a tool holder :(. would've picked a less nicer block for such an application. (unless the grooves were going to be part of something you were building anyway)
