In This Video, Brian, my dad and teacher, comes in to give Joe a saw sharpening lesson. He is 84 years old and finally retired from working with us when he was 80. #woodworking #joinery #woodwork #dtjoinery #sawsharpening #skills

Great to see the old school passing on skills and it’s also good to see some of the younger generation interested in this stuff!

When I was an apprentice we had to sharpen and set saws every Friday afternoon ready for the following week

You probably hated it at the time, but a great skill to have learnt.

Brilliant. Can you hire Brian out?

Haha. I wish he still worked with us🙂

Once again really enjoyed this post, thank you. Am i right in assuming he was sharpening a rip pattern saw? He reminded me of my Grandfather who without fail sharpened his saws every Sunday morning. He too told stories of blokes who had glass eyes as well, i certainly miss all that chat. Cheers, Tim.

Thank you, we appreciate the feedback. This saw was an 8 point handsaw, a rip saw is courser still. The saw is badly pitted, so it is only used as a practice sharpening saw. I used to get some good laughs working with him, with stories from his young years and how the men he was taught by carried on.

Great to see a tradesman of Brian's young age teaching a young buck. Not taking anything from you or joe but i think Brian should have bit of time in front of the camera, if nothing else to share a few stories

Yes, it's something we have been thinking about.

Brian is still sharp as a tack, bet he could still show the young ones up knocking out sashes or whatever 🙏 Still got plenty of hair too….. 😜

Priceless when it comes to knowledge and experience, that's for sure. More hair than me and less grey too 🤣

Very much enjoyed this. I am preparing to learn to sharpen and have obtained a saw set, vise and the file and holder for the top. Now, I just need to decide which saw from the chunks I’ve bought at flea markets is the right one to destroy on practicing. That’s a tough one as I’m clueless. Thanks for this from Chicago.

@ericerf6837 As far as saws go, pick the one that is in the worst condition, kinked or rusted beyond salvation as was the saw in this video. Glad it was useful for you. Enjoy the learning experience.😊
