We are five years into a seven year effort of transforming 20 acres of "Piney Grove" in Northwest Florida into our dream homestead/mini farm to be filled with animals and joy. Harbor freight sells a belt sharpener that comes with different belts. It puts a near perfect edge on tools, knives etc. Doesn't seem to take off as much metal as a grinder. Different belt grits for different projects.

I don't mow quite as much land as you do, but I sharpen every other year with acceptable results.

We noticed it wasn't cutting well and was leaving stems behind. Our grass is pretty tough and there's probably some Florida sand being picked up too!

It's going to be a constant battle with our tough bahia grass and sandy soil being sucked up into the mower deck. There has to be a blade out there that lasts longer.

Bahia grass , plus the sand being blown up I have the same problem I have to sharpen my blades every other mowing!! Good luck with keeping up with it!!!

If you’re blades start turning red from the grinder you’re taking the temper out of the steel to re-temper the steel dip it in either water or oil

What would happen if you remove the chainsbon the rear? Do you think it would discharge better and leave less thatch?

I use a belt sander with a purple belt, easy to keep angle for edge but I only do a couple blades twice a year?

New viewer here so I may be off on my assessment. It looks like where your farm is located you have really sandy soil. Sand absolutely destroys blades especially if you are mowing close. This happens even if you are not scalping. Only thing that will help is raising your mowing height. But when you do that your blades have to be really sharp to get a clean cut. It’s a catch twenty-two. Dense Bahiagrass is the hardest to mow. I wish you luck.

Shorting the board a little then you wouldn't need to reset the blade to sharpen.
