Somewhat misleading information about sharpening knife alignment. I have the same grinder and when I level the knife before sharpening, I measure the distance from the bottom of the holder and not from the top pressure plate. The holes for the tightening nuts of the upper plate have quite a bit of play and it is not always possible to align the plate in the same way. On the other hand, the lower side on which I place the planing knife is made as one part with an upper edge that slides along the part fixed on the sander plate. These parts are set quite precisely by the manufacturer. The flatness of the planer knife is quite essential to ensure that the knife grinds evenly along its length and does not take more from one side than the other. Otherwise it's a good video. Thanks.

Years ago a company I worked for had a mold they would put worn blades into and pour babbit on the back to extend the life of the blades as they were ground down.
@TCSawmills
@TCSawmills 3 жыл бұрын
That's pretty cool, life extension.
@mrbibstoo
@mrbibstoo 3 жыл бұрын
When sharpening chipper knives, for the sawmill, babbit was used for extending the life of the blades. Every couple of sharpenings, we broke off and re poured the babbit to make up for grinding the face of the knife. We changed out the blades at least twice every shift and often times more than that.

I may of missed it. Did you discuss the importance of maintaining the same width of each set of three blades? How do you accomplish this? Thanks

Greetings from Germany, 1st of all, i like it when you can do it yourself, but i dont like it if its not properly done, in germany we have excellent sharpening shops, you cant get your knives sharper than they do it, but its also pretty expensive with 20 euro per 4 knives. but what i learned from them is that you NEVER, NEVER sharpen without A LOT of cooling, like really, at max you should do one pass and then cool it with water or better a water/oil mix, otherwise it will get concave. but i still have a question about that machine, the angle adjustment, is it good? or is it as wobbly as the ones from holzmann and co?

I have a second question regarding setting the sharping angle. Are there standards for blade sharping angles? I used a gauge to measure a new jointer blade so I at least have a starting reference point. It measured 38.5 degrees.

Hi have this machine but it come with a finer steer than what you have here. Any chance you could post a link to where you got your stone wheel from please 😊

That's what I was wondering. I have the 120 and 320 grit stones but Mr. Robert is able to go across the stone a lot slower than I can without burning the knife.

Good video. What does the leather do to the blades? Could you add an explanation for that?
@TCSawmills
@TCSawmills 2 жыл бұрын
The leather strap is used to clean the blade's sharp edge from any burs from the sharpening. Also a polish compound can be added to clean the edge up and really make it shine. It's an added step to make the blade as sharp and clean as possible.

Thank you, I have the same sharpener and never had the manual as it was used. Does Mr. Roberts know how to hammer (tension) sawmill head saws, if he does it would be interesting to see. Its hard to find a good hammer smith I may have to do my own saws.

I have the same planer blade sharpener. I also run a business. I am having a hard time to find the grinding wheels. I would appreciate Mr. Roberts info on this. I learn a lot from him.

I have the same grinder from Grizzly and I found the ajustment of the stone was not smooth so I made a jig to hang the table on so the weight of the motor makes the stone ajustment work very smooth.

Yeah ive just picked one up, the single thread height adjustment causes the table to cock over. Good idea to suspend the unit. I may steal that.

Can this be used to sharpen planer knives with the corrugated back? I just wonder how that affects the way the knife mounts to the cutter head.

How does sharpening the double sided planer blades for the dewalt planer work? They would have to be exactly the same length because the way they are mounted there isn’t any adjustments you can make. The screw holes are in the same spot so if it’s thicker on one end the the other your planer would be cutting crooked. I was under the impression that those blades couldn’t be sharpened

It's a bit rough but count the strokes. They aren't really meant to be sharpened but we have done it a few times with pretty good results.
