Very nice video! I am also tired of the Prismacolor-"Bashing" in the internet. I think their richness of colour and the fantastic blendability is simply unsurpassed and unique, also the creaminess and range of colours. I would never give them up, even for the Luminance, that i have tried with a few single pencils. I use the Derwent battery sharpener for all my coloured pencils and my Prismacolors break very rarely. I use them together with Polychromos which makes a wonderful combination.

+mario.fine.art yea. When considering all the parameters prismacolor is the winner for me. After buying this derwent manual sharpener first thing i did was to order prismacolor pencils in bulk :D
@nokiot98 жыл бұрын
mario.fine.art people bash prismacolor because they know all the issues people are having and they choose not to address the issues by offering refunds or fixing their quality control. It's a terrible business model.
@VynilNostalgia30188 жыл бұрын
Tommy Ohlrich Of course you are right about all those issues and Prismacolor should do something against that. I also would happily pay a higher price for better woodcasings and stronger leads. But even with those issues Prismacolor is still a wonderful pencil with qualities other brands don't have. And I am tired of some peoples postings it would be the worst and lousiest pencil ever. It is just not true. Many of them just don't know how to draw...
@kianna10828 жыл бұрын
They don't know how to draw or look up ways to care of the pencils, which is why they break so frequently
@wadebradley73888 жыл бұрын
I agree,I think the quality of the wood is fine, however I have had a problem with the cores being off centered, But its actually a zero problem when I use My X~Acto NS pencil sharpener. It brings them to a fine point every time. zero loss.But I have seen the cores being drastically off center, this can easily cause a problem with many if not all standard pencil sharpeners. If you simply get a 10 dollar traditional pencil sharpener, you have the least expensive best cove /blending pencil available.

WOW WOW WOW!!! To date this is the best adult coloring video I have come across. Sooooooo helpful. Thank you for doing this research. My story is very similar to yours...I've spent more money on pencils that don't break as easily only to find that I am very limited in colors and look to my Prismacolors to fill the gap. I had a set of 72 and love them...except for the breakage. I would be in the middle of working on a project and have to stop to sharpen (and butcher) my pencil. After seeing your video, I bought the Derwent sharpener. Once received I sharpened my 72 set of Prismacolors without breaking one core!! Now, these are pencils that I know break on a consistent basis so I was SHOCKED that I got through the whole set with no issues. I then IMMEDIATELY went on line and purchased the whole set of 150 with the confidence that I would not have this breaking issue...and I didn't! They arrived on Saturday and I proceeded to sharpen each pencil to a beautiful point with just 6 turns of the handle WITHOUT ONE SINGLE BREAKAGE. I can't tell you how happy I am. My set of 150 Prismacolors are now, without a doubt, my favorite set of colored pencils. My original set is now my spare set. I now also own a battery operated helical blade sharpener for travel purposes.

With electric helical blade sharpeners, it is suggested to run a "normal" graphite pencil through it (sharpen a normal pencil) every few sharpens of a Wax based pencil. It cleans and lubricates the blade with the graphite (as far as I understand it).

I was just saying I was going to stop using prismacolors the other day,I was using a couple of new pencils and I never got a lead until the pencil was about 4 inches left.It happened a few times and I said I was going to stop buying them so now I will look for a better pencil sharpener. Thanks for sharing
@fillimenabourassa84198 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately Prismacolor pencils are no longer made in the USA. They are now made in Mexico. I have been using Prismacolor pencils for decades, and they are my pencil of choice. That being said I have noticed that the leads are much more fragile than they used to be. Years ago there was no technique needed for sharpening them. Alas like most things that go from being made in the USA to elsewhere, something happens to the quality control... And it's not for the better. I will continue to use them because nothing lays down high pigment like prismacolor.

You can also wrap your pencils in a heating pad on low for about an hour (not while they are still in their tin) and that should HELP to resolve the issue with the leads not being attached to the casings on the inside of the pencil.

The best way to sharpen them is to do it with a sharp knife. I sharpen them to a very fine point with a lead reaching 15mm. Prismacolors I own are made in Mexico, they look poorly made but have never had problems with them.

A great explanation on these pencils and sharpeners. I don't have these pencils I use Koh-I-Noor. Because I just love their watercolour sets I also went for their pencils. I find them to be really vibrant. I also have Faber Castell polychromos and I find these colours really vibrant as well. Now shock horror I also bought some Marco Raffine pencils even though the reviews I have seen weren't very favourable. For anyone starting out I think these pencils are much better than the reviews they got. They have a great range of greys, greens, browns, and blues, I would have liked to have seen more pinks but what the heck for the money I found them really great value and just as creamy as the other pencils. I hope this is some help for the people that follow you. Congratulations for being included in the blog it shows that your talent is appreciated. Do you need subtitles No!!! I don't have any trouble understanding you.

Hello Sir are you still using the Derwent sharpener , is it still working properly ? Have you ever used the apsara long point sharpener , we get a fairly long point in it the only drawback is we cannot insert any of the Derwent pencils in it but polychromos and prismacolors go well with it.
@uncledooley7 жыл бұрын
As a new artist in the coloured pencil media, I am an oil painter and use graphite , but found some beautiful pieces of work in coloured pencil and decided to give my hand. Since I was new to it I had no preconceived ideas, so I tried every coloured pencil that was available to me, because I live in Toronto, all brands are available. As it worked out ,I left nothing to chance and gave each brand a working evaluation, and what it melted down to is, my go to pencils are Derwent Coloursoft, with Prismacolor Premiere a very, very close second, but Prismacolor has colours that Derwent doesn't have. Then for fine lines and special effects I use Prismacolor Verithin, which I love. Because coloured pencils being expensive I tried every sharpener ,from manual to mechanized. After destroying so many pencils I come back to what I use for graphite, and that is a razor utility knife, and because I love long sharp points, care and lots of sand paper is required. The reason I love long points it that it requires a very soft touch and I can use the side of the pencil for difference special effects. I am not posting this because I feel that my way is the best way , but offers a different perspective to a wonderful media.

I agree. The Derwent manual crank sharpener is great. Yes, it does eat the wood a bit BUT it is better than ending up with broken tips all of the time. Personally, I prefer to see my pencils sharp even if they end up a bit smaller than a pencil I cannot use at all. Kind regards from GB.

On occasion, I will run a lead pencil through my Panasonic electric pencil sharpener Model no. KP-77 a few times. It helps remove wax buildup. Try to keep the wax pencil centered and very gently push it in. Notice if the wood is at the same cut all around the pencil. If it is not, notice the side that there is more wood and put the pencil back into the sharpener but favor the side that you want the wood to be removed. Check frequently.

You said you prefer wax based pencils over oil based pencils. Can I ask why? I'm new to colour pencils and I'm not sure what difference that would make. Could you please explain?
@ArtFadil8 жыл бұрын
+DonpatchXD wax based pencils are softer than oil based pencils in general. When drawing multiple layers of colors its easy to mix those colors physically with wax based pencils on the paper itself. Oil based pencils are a bit dry compared to wax based ones. But since they are harder, level of detail you can achieve is more and you can layer more colors even though you cannot fully mix those colors physically. And you can even modify already laid down dark color with a light color pencil when using a wax based pencil. This is difficult in oil based pencils because of their translucent nature.

I have got a Dahle133 sharper it looks the same.. I haven't used them on my prisma's but I will try. they only part I don't like about these sharpeners is that you are not able to see how far your point is? do you have trouble with this to?
@ArtFadil8 жыл бұрын
+W. van Gaal i think dahle will work just fine. Derwent one has an autostop so it becomes loose after complete sharpening. But after using for a while you will know when to stop.

I am over the fear to sharpen my prisma's! thank you for that.. ☺and it stopped automatically! I just tend to go one, because I love to sharpen..(if it works correctly). I have subscribed to your channel and hope to learn a lot more.

For what its worth I use a Prisma two hole manual sharpener almost exclusively. And i use it on Prismas, Faber Castells, Derwents, CretaColors and the cheap brands. The only problem is the blades just don't hold up. I wish you could get new blades to just put new one in or somebody would come out with a sharpener that used blades for box cutters.

Yes but I compared the hand sharpener with another kind of electric sharpener and it ate up alot of my pencil before it sharpened

I bought a similar electric sharpener that cost me dearly. But, much better off paying big for something of quality that will last a long time than to buy a cheap thing that will break in a matter of months. I've had an X-acto teacher pro sharpener for more than a year now, sharpening on average 4 pencils a day and it shows no signs of wearing down or getting dull. Works on Crayolas, prismas, regular lead pencils, and has the ability to sharpen different size pencils.

They are not made in the usa, they stopped making them in the usa for a long time. They are a usa company but they make all their pencils in mexico.

wow your info was so interesting and useful. I will try to sharpen with a sharpener like yours ..I am sure my son will think I am nuts as he bought an electrical oine but it scares me that my poor pencils will get eaten up lol,..Plus the point never is any where like how sharp yours performs for you
